Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world–the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions–is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us. (1 John 2:15-19 ESV)
If you are at all familiar with Eschatology and the many different views on the end times then you have undoubtedly read or heard of a man who is referred to as the antichrist. However, you may be surprised to learn that the word “antichrist” is found in the Bible only in John’s epistles of 1st John and 2nd John. The study of this person or persons is not the intent of this article. I have no doubt that in God’s timing the final Antichrist will be revealed, but for now I would like to look at the attributes that we should understand are of the spirit of the antichrist.
William Tyndale, in 1526, was the first to translate the Greek New Testament into English. He had to flee England to finish his work in Germany and the Low Countries of The Netherlands and Belgium. He was constantly in hiding while working on getting as many copies of the English Bible shipped across the English Channel to eager believers as was physically possible. Why was he having to run and hide? The Greek New Testament revealed that the Latin Bible of the Roman Catholic Church, The Latin Vulgate, contained many gross errors. Along with that, the Roman Catholic Church had instituted a huge number of doctrines that were nowhere to be found in the Greek of the New Testament or the Hebrew and Aramaic of the Old Testament. The R.C. had long before moved away from Justification by Faith alone. Instead, it taught that works were necessary for salvation. They invented Purgatory, Indulgences, the infallibility of the Pope, and had added sacraments that were not instituted by Christ.
Tyndale was a very well educated English Priest. He had attended Oxford from the age of 12 graduating with a Doctorate at the age of 20. He was fluent in eight languages. He had a knack for language that enabled him to read Greek, Latin, and Hebrew then write in English in such a way that even the simplest of his readers could understand it and be edified. That was his driving force, to get the Bible into everyone’s hands that could read. This was in direct opposition to the policies of the English Bishops and priests who wanted to keep access to the scriptures as limited as possible so they could keep control for themselves. They passed laws or rules specifying that only the Latin Bible was permissible. Anyone caught with a Bible or even a portion of scripture in English was subject to arrest, torture and execution. And, of course, they burned every copy of Tyndale’s Bibles they could find and often the people that possessed them, alive!
After his first version of the English New Testament, Tyndale released a book titled The Parable of the Wicked Mammon, also in English. It was the first of his extended treatises; it is an exposition of the New Testament teaching that faith is more important than works. It is loosely based on a sermon by Luther about the puzzling ‘wicked mammon’ parable in Luke 16. The Prologue to this work ends with a powerful attack on Antichrist—it is he that can come on again in different name and clothes, like an actor—in a long paragraph identified, by means of Christ’s attack on Pharisees and hypocrites, with ‘our prelates’. There is difference in the names between pope, a cardinal, a bishop, and so forth, and to say a scribe, a Pharisee, a senior and so forth, but the thing is all one.’ In other words Tyndale knew all about the spirit of the antichrist and who were possessed by it.
He continued: The old Antichrists brought Christ unto Pilate saying, by our law he ought to die…They do all things of good zeal, they say, they love you so well, that they had rather burn you than that you should have fellowship with Christ…Some man will ask peradventure why I take the labour to make this work inasmuch as they will burn it, seeing they burnt the gospel? I answer, in burning the New Testament they did none other thing than that I looked for: not more shall they do, if they burn me also, if it be God’s will it shall so be.
Nevertheless in translating the New Testament I did my duty, and so do I now, and will do as much more as God hath ordained me to do…If God’s word bear record unto it and thou feelest in thine heart that it be so, be of good comfort and give God thanks.
Tyndale did indeed go to his death at the hands of these wicked men. Since he was an ordained priest, he was allowed to be strangled first then they burned him. Many of the saints who eagerly bought or distributed his Bibles were burned alive often with the confiscated Bibles used to light the flames. These acts by these antichrists were so severe and complete that only two copies of Tyndale’s first New Testament run are still with us today.
What is the spirit of the antichrist? It is manifested by anyone who speaks of Christ contrary to what the Word of God says. It is also seen in those who try to suppress the truth from the Word about Christ’s teachings. Teachings about Hell, Judgment, and Eschatology are discouraged or ridiculed by these people. Why? Jesus taught us much about all these things. If He said so much about these things shouldn’t we strive to understand them? Our modern day antichrists went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. They teach things directly contrary to what the Bible says about Christ, the end times, repentance, the nature of genuine salvation, The Trinity, etc. If we examine these teachings carefully, we will find Humanism at their core. All heretical teachings point to Man, while correct Biblical teachings always point to Christ. By these things, those who teach them are revealing their true nature and the fact that we are in the end times.
Dear ones, this is why we must study our Bibles. We must become intimate with the truth therein. We must get that truth in our hearts. We must be ready to judge when encountered by these wicked people. I wrote a series of articles called “Judge Not” several months ago. These articles still receive the highest hits on my blog. The focus of that study was on Jesus’ teaching to the Church to not judge hypocritically. Jesus never told us that we should not judge false teachers, but we are never to gossip or judge hypocritically or with false motives. So when we are confronted by a teaching that directly refutes clear Biblical teachings then we must be prepared to confront and rebuke them. Could this be costly? If we are self-absorbed or self-focused then the cost will look enormous. However, if we take the view that Tyndale took against the antichrists in 16th Century England, then we will take his attitude of If God’s word bear record unto it and thou feelest in thine heart that it be so, be of good comfort and give God thanks.
Let us pray for modern day William Tyndales and Martin Luthers to be raised up to be instruments in God’s hands to shine the light of His truth into the darkness that is loved by our 21st Century antichrists.

I do pray that mighty men of God will rise and help us during these difficult times. It seems like many a very self-focused. They don’t want anything to come between them and their fame or money. They are very Scriptural and have been great leaders of God, but they are starting to let the servants of Satan eat at their table. We must all pray for each other. There is a fierce battle going on over God’s people. We must put on the armor God has provided for us. I’m speaking to myself mostly…I keep telling myself, “Wake up, wake up! Why do you slumber?” and I keep walking as though I’m in a dream. God I pray that You wake Your children up. That we would be soldiers in Your army. That we would not slumber anymore, but that we would be diligent prayer warriors and readers of Your word. That we would always stand up for Your Word and correct those who would try to destroy it. Amen.
This is an excellent and most informative article. The beast, the antichrist, both part and parcel of Revelation’s great whore (Papal Rome) and her harlot daughters, Pagan and Protestant.
God’s Truth is being given by those Jesus said would be speaking Truth: babes, those untutored by man, who perfect praise by speaking Truth; and, they are persecuted daily, accused of all the same things of which Christ was accused– blasphemy, false prophets, doing the Devil’s work.
Thank you for posting this great article. You might be interested in the few I’ve recently posted here, having just begun this blogging thing. LOL! God is good! http://bonnieq.wordpress.com

Amen Sarah!
Bonnie,
You made an interesting point about God’s truth coming from those who are not trained. That had not occured to me before about how our seminaries are guilty of turning out many apostate christian leaders. I was oppressed at the church I just left because the leaders refused to listen to my warnings, rebukes or whatever because I wasn’t one of them. I have never been to serminary. Well, God still told me they were going after apostate teachings, etc. I was puzzled for a long time why a serminary trained pastor could not see the truth from scripture. Well, God is good. Thanks for your comment. I will visit your blog later this evening.

“They are ever studying but never coming to the truth.” And, as they study they perpetually apply worldly perspectives instead of spiritual perspectives, thus can never come to the truth.
Mike, you must continue to speak out but know that you will be mightily persecuted, as Jesus warned. You will be called as He was called and as I am called: “blasphemer, false prophet, doing the Devil’s work.” I bless them and move on, as Christ also instructed; for they unwittingly confirm that I bear God’s Holy Seal of Authority.
Speak bold and strong; we are few but we have the power of God!
Love in Christ, SisBon
The Lord draws many to your site, Mike, because you obviously love what He loves, hate what He hates, and boldly, yet gently, speak truth without compromise. I like to come back here just to escape the heat of the battle for a little while…and rest. Thank you…
Thanks Bonnie you do so as well.
Jessica,
Yes, I too get beat up and tired. Isn’t it amazing though how refreshing it is to fellowship as the Lord feeds us from His table. You are always welcome here my sister.

Thanks for the encourgment Sherry – Great verses!
Wow, it seems as if it has been forever since I have posted on this blog.
Very good post on why Bible study is important. Of course, if we are for Christ and not “anti”Christ, we will have a zeal to study the Word to begin with! This means we have even further encouragement to do so.
Good post!

BTW, just noticed you might want to edit the post title to “Antichrist”. Though it doesn’t bother me… just thought you might like to know.
Good to have you back Albert! Great comment and I changed the title thanx.
Mike, that is what I have been trying to tell people I know. The spirit within oneself by the lewd and vicious acts they do or say are giving rise to the “antichrist”.
In Revelations it states the first seal is given him power to conquer. The first time I meditated about this, my question was how does the antichrist get his power? Then watching the news, it popped in my head. It’s the PEOPLE themselves that do this. YOU ARE CORRECT! That is why people need to really read and study their Bible.
By the way, I like your Blogsite. It is so wonderful to read.
Good warning to be taken very seriously. The Anti-christ is the embodiment of Lucifer himself. A wonderful and charismatic fellow who is attractive to all but the Spirit-filled believer. He will have good solutions for worldly problems and he will be tolerant of everyone and everything. But he will be the most viscious instrument of evil that will spread eternal death to billions. I believe we will be gone before he is revealed, but if that is wrong we all need to be vigilant and watch in prayer. Timely, Mike.
Sherry,
Yes, those people who have not the Spirit of Christ will be those who exhibit the spirit of the antichrist. They seem to be Satan’s subjects and even when they think they are freely doing what they want to do, they are really doing his will. Thos who do have the Spirit of Chirst, genuine believers, do not give any power to the enemy. We still sin, but God sustains us and will not allow us to cross certian boundries.
Rick,
Absolutely right about the Anti-christ. I read your comments on OLD TRUTH the other day about that person who was blatantly exhibiting the spirit of the anitchrist right there. Your comments about that is what started me thinking about “spirit of the antichrist.” Of course that is how God works with me. I am reading William Tyndale’s biography right now. The opposition he had to fight through to translate the Bible into English was Satanically empowered and those wicked people who opposed him were of the spirit of the antichrist. Interestingly, one of his worst opponents was Sir Thomas More (A Man for All Seasons). This man actually had people tortured in his own house to make them recant of being Lutherans. He is now a “Saint” of the Roman Catholic Church. What does this tell us?

Fascinating history, Mike!
Thanks for sharing, it. May I add a little something about judging and rebuking others? It has been my experience that when this is called for, and it is called for according to the word of God as you have stated, that if you include yourself in the rebuke and judgement, people are less apt to feel “judged” by “you”, and we don’t look self-righteous.
This is important because it will show a humbleness on our part, and it also shows that the judgement is from the word of God and not from our own selves, it includes everyone. It shows that we, ourselves have come under the judgement, and indeed we have if we are truly regenerate, and that that judgement has changed our lives and can change theirs as well. This is a very loving and humble approach, in my opinion.
As a side note, I was not accepted at the seminary I applied to because I didn’t belong to a church, they wouldn’t even consider my heart or circumstances in the matter.
But as I can see by your very inspired work here, Mike, one does not need seminary to do God’s work intelligently, if that is what He wills for them to do and I praise Him for the work He is doing throught you!

Terri Lynn,
Yes, we must rebuke when it is called for in the spirit of humility. Any other context will result in anger coming right back at us. There are times I wish I had gone to Serminary, but everytime I went that direction something happened that blocked it from happening. My Grandfather was a Preacher and he never made it past the 3rd Grade. He was a powerful preacher. He was born in 1877 and was a very old man when I was born so I never got to hear him preach. I think I would have liked that. So, don’t worry about Seminary, God will use us according to His will and we must be content in that. God uses your encouraging comments to bless me. He knows your heart whether people do or not. Give yourself wholely to Him (I perceive that you have done this
) and watch out!

Terri Lynn,
I think God was with you when you were unable to get into Seminary (if you were going there to become a pastor) because God prohibts women from being pastors. He didn’t want you getting caught up in something that was not of Him and thus not be able to use you in a mighty way that He has planned for you now. God is so great and loving to lead all of us down the right path we are to walk. I know many times I would go one way because I thought is was good and right and He would lead me another way and then I could see His hand in my life when I looked back later.
God bless,
sarah
Sarah,
No, I don’t want to be a pastor.
I love to study and want to be able to speak intelligently to others when they ask me about God’s word. I just felt that seminary would be a good structured way in which to grow in the knowledge of God’s word, as I do learn better within a structured environment.
God will use me however He will and I will be content with that.
Thanks for the encouragement, Sister!

I signed up for an online theology course that is endorsed by Chuck Swindoll. Here is the website http://www.ttpstudents.com/content/
The “Introduction to Theology” is a pre-requisite course and it begins on Tuesday. All the classes are interactive online… I am hoping that it will be a fun way to study and interact with others…
By the way, Mike. What was the comment about Ligonier Ministries referring to? I must have missed that…
Jessica,
That’s great about that course. I’m sure God will use it in a mighty way in your life.
Ligonier Ministries publishes a devotional magazine (which I subscribe to) called Tabletalk. I really like it. They always have some other articles that they space out throughout the magazine to read on weekends or whatever. Well, in this month’s magazine there is an article by Michael Card about art. I know nothing about him, but some of our friends in the discernment groups consider him an emergent apologist while others see him as a very intellectual Reformed artist. I really don’t know. On top of all this, R.C. Sproul has stepped down from running Ligonier. Instead his son-in-law runs it and he seems to be secularizing many ascpects of the ministry. That is the extent of what I know about it. Please pray for R.C. Sproul and his ministry. His books and preaching has meant a great deal to me. God has used him in a very powerful way in untold millions of peoples lives.

God is sovereign… “The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases.” Prov. 21:1
I think that we must be careful that we don’t become men and women on a witch hunt, especially within the body of Christ’s church. I have heard R.C. Sproul himself speak about art as an expression of the glory of God. Although I was suspicious of his choice of topic, by the end of his lecture, I was humbled by his perspective.
Many of the blogs have created a sense of panic and paranoia that, I believe, undermine the sovereignty of God. I am watching what He is doing in the church with the expectation that many who thought they were wise will one day realize that they were actually working against the hand of God…
Anyway…you have steered away from that in your blog… Your keen sense of discernment acknowedges the apostasy without allowing it to supplant Christ from being the center of your messages. Anything that takes our eyes off of the cross is apostasy…regardless of which side of the line a believer stands. Anyway…thanks for the clarification.
Jessica,
You are very welcome my sister. Thanks for your encouraging comment. I confess, I do need that from time to time. The enemy’s attacks are quite severe right now. Yes, we must pray for R.C. Sproul to continue to minister for God’s glory alone.

== Risen Christ is Antichrist ==
The Risen Chirst is the Antichirst, the first beast that had the fatal wound that had been healed.
Paul of Tarsus was his false prophet, the second beast who was servent to the first beast and extended its authority everywhere, making the world and all its people worship the first beast.
If you don’t believe me, read the Bible and no! you will not die if you eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, but your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods.
John,
You don’t know what you’re talking about. I have read the Bible cover to cover more times than I can count. The Risen Christ was the one giving the Revelation to John. The AnitChrist is Satan’s false christ who will decieve the world. Paul is an Apostle of Jesus Christ, but he was no false prophet.
Your Gnostic gospel is not welcome here. Yes, I do know about Gnosticism which says that the serpent is actually the Christ while Jesus Christ is the AntiChrist. All a bunch of Satan inspired bunk and you have been deceived by him.

Amen, Mike! John, of “Risen Christ is Antichrist”, is bouncing off the walls. I have to wonder what he is drinking or ingesting. Thank you for setting him straight.

Thanks Bonnie.
Mike Ratliff,
It was the Spirit of Christ and not the Risen flesh that gave John the Revelation.
“I was on the island of Patmos for having preached God’s word and witnessed for Jesus; it was the Lord’s Day and the Spirit possessed me” Revelation 1:9-10
Please read the Bible carefully and don’t make things up to suit your needs
John,
That is not what Revelation 1 says. It says that John was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day. Do you want the Greek? Nevermind here is the English Text.
I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet (Rev 1:9-10)
I have studied this deeply John and taught through Revelation several times and that included studying the Greek. There is no way you can make the text say what you are trying to make it say. John was in the spirit. that means he was worshipping. It was Christ Himself standing in the midst of the seven lampstands who gave the revelation to John. I suggest you ask God to show you the truth. I promise it isn’t going to be Gnosticism.
In Christ

Mike Ratliff.
Yes, John was in the Spirit of Christ and what he saw was in the Spirit and not a material apparition.
No John,
The Greek for “in the spirit” simply means to pray or worship. It is talking about what John is doing not the condition he is in. If you are going to try to interpret any scripture you must get into the text, the original text, not the English or whatever.
What did John see? He saw Jesus Christ the Son of God Risen. He is in his glorifed state. John was transported to Heaven to see what he saw.
In Christ
Mike Ratliff
Mike Ratliff,
If you wish to go to the original text, please do so, if you can obtain a copy. For your information John was not Greek. For you to be correct, we have to assume that the translator had a thorough knowledge of both languages and that the meanings, of the words, have not changed in the last 2,000 years. As I’m sure that you are aware, many words in our language do not mean the same thing that they did a 100 or a 1,000 years ago. A better way to understand, the meaning of the words, is to see how they are used. John was in the Spirit and he had a vision.
“Then, in my vision, I saw a door open in heaven and heard the same voice speaking to me, the voice like a trumpet, saying ‘come up here: I will show you what is to come in the future.’ With that, the Spirit possessed me and I saw a throne standing in heaven, and the One who was sitting on the throne, and the person sitting there looked like a diamond and a ruby.” Revelation 4:1-3
What John saw was in the Spirit and not in the natural.
“I tell you most solemnly, we speak only about what we know and witness only to what we have seen and yet you people reject our evidence. If you do not believe me when I speak about things in this world, how are you going to believe me when I speak to about heavenly things? No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of Man who is in heaven; and the Son of Man must be lifted up as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert so that everyone who believes my have eternal life in him.” John 3:11-15
“Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know; for salvation comes from the Jews. But the hour will come—in fact it is here already—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth: that is the kind of worshiper the Father wants. God is spirit, and those who worship must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:21-24
John,
Your first comment reveals your total ignorance of the Bible. The New Testament was written ENTIRELY in Koine Greek or “Common Greek.” Alexander the Great instituted that language in all the lands he conquered so there would be a “Common” lanugage of commerce and law. John wrote his gospel, his three epistles and the book of Revelation in that language. The word’s meanings have not changed at all because Konie Greek has not changed at all. The Greek of today has changed since then, but Koine Greek, like Latin and Hebrew, have not changed at all because they are dead or semi-dead languages.
I’m not going to argue about this anymore John. Yes he had a vision, but how does that prove your point that Jesus was a spirit? Was not Jesus resurrected from the dead with a new glorified body? Didn’t the Apostles handle Him before He ascended? Didn’t he eat a honeycomb and a fish? He is the same Jesus standing in the midst of the lampstands. You are trying to make John’s vision prove that the Jesus he saw is not the same Jesus who rose from the dead and ascended to the Father in Heaven. They are the same.
The words of Jesus speaking about God being spirit was referring to worship of the Father. We worship him as John did, in the Spirit. Your own scriptural references disprove your point.
