If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. Matthew 16:24-25
If God has called you to be truly like Jesus in all your spirit, He will draw you into a life of crucifixion and humility. He will put on you such demands of obedience that you will not be allowed to follow other Christians. In many ways, He seems to let other good people do things which He will not let you do.
Others who seem to be very religious and useful may push themselves, pull wires, and scheme to carry out their plans, but you cannot. If you attempt it, you will meet with such failure and rebuke from the Lord as to make you sorely penitent.
Others can brag about themselves, their work, their successes, their writings, but the Holy Spirit will not allow you to do any such thing. If you begin to do so, He will lead you into some deep mortification that will make you despise yourself and all your good works.
Others will be allowed to succeed in making great sums of money, or having a legacy left to them, or in having luxuries, but God may supply you only on a day-to-day basis, because He wants you to have something far better than gold, a helpless dependence on Him and His unseen treasury.
The Lord may let others be honored and put forward while keeping you hidden in obscurity because He wants to produce some choice, fragrant fruit for His coming glory, which can only be produced in the shade.
God may let others be great, but keep you small. He will let others do a work for Him and get the credit, but He will make you work and toil without knowing how much you are doing. Then, to make your work still more precious, He will let others get the credit for the work which you have done; this to teach you the message of the Cross, humility, and something of the value of being cloaked with His nature.
The Holy Spirit will put a strict watch on you, and with a jealous love rebuke you for careless words and feelings, or for wasting your time, which other Christians never seem distressed over.
So make up your mind that God is an infinite Sovereign and has a right to do as He pleases with His own, and that He may not explain to you a thousand things which may puzzle your reason in His dealings with you.
God will take you at your word. If you absolutely sell yourself to be His slave, He will wrap you up in a jealous love and let other people say and do many things that you cannot. Settle it forever; you are to deal directly with the Holy Spirit, He is to have the privilege of tying your tongue or chaining your hand or closing your eyes in ways which others are not dealt with. However, know this great secret of the Kingdom: When you are so completely possessed with the Living God that you are, in your secret heart, pleased and delighted over this peculiar, personal, private, jealous guardianship and management of the Holy Spirit over your life, you will have found the vestibule of heaven, the high calling of God.
An excellent piece. This is the poisonous fruit that comes from the church being involved in poilitics at any level and trying to affect change by legislating morality or earthly diplomacy. I personally believe that America is an enemy of the Lord Jesus and I would recommend everyone pray about abstaining from participating in the anti-christ system.
Our mission is not of this world and Rick Warren is just acting out what most churches believe. I believe it is an abomination to have the American flag in the room that should be sanctified exclusively for worshiping the Lord God Almighty.
I better quit before I am burned at the stake by my own brothers and sisters. Christ – All in All!!
What can I say Rick? Our allegiance must be to God and His Kingdom first. Beyond that we are not to break any laws that don’t conflict with the will of God. On the other hand, we must do all we can to not obey anyone in authority who is commanding what is contrary to will of God. It is a difficult proposition to find truly Christian oriented “anything” in the secular. In fact, we only find forms and shadows of religion and a social gospel that pretends to be Christian, but is only a facade built around patriotism.
What are we to do?

Hi Mike,
Good piece. I am very weary when someone, mostly a pastor uses the word “I” so much and I find Mr. Warren uses it quite a lot. He seems to point more to himself then he does to the Lord.
Cristina
Cristina,
The reason we are so aware now of R.W.’s apostasy is the fruit. Jesus said that we can know false shepherds by their fruit. His fruit are all of these seeker sensitive pastors all over the world seeking to emulate His success. Their flocks are scattered and masses of false converts believe they are genuine. It is tragic.

I find that post to be very accurate. What I do find disturbing is the huge acceptance that Rick and Obama are getting from the “Christian” community! I do believe that if Rick can persuade them to vote for Obama then he will win the presidency…then what will we have?…the Anti-Christ and his prophet. I’m betting on two more years of freedom and then it’s down hill from then. We are so going to have to get more serious in our relationship with God.
Sarah,
Yes, I had similar thoughts as I read Bob’s piece, however, I hadn’t taken it that far. Your last statement is something we must grasp and do. If we do that then even if everything happens like that, we will be able to do the Lord’s will. What else can we ask for?

Mike,
we can’t ask for anything more than God and His will even now, you’re so right! I will not fret because they cannot do anything outside his will. We should really be in our prayer closets though. I know I need to be in there a lot more.
Sarah,
Yes, I do not pray as I should either. I think God is drawing us to get serious about that.

“The Washington Post reporter got the message that Obama and Warren are both ‘retailing hope’ in their own ways. But is either proclaiming the hope of eternal life for those who have had their sins washed away by the blood of Jesus? Certainly not before kings.”
Rick Warren retails hope in himself, his problem solving plans, his ability to unify groups of people around a common cause, his resources, his leadership, and so on.
True hope is in God Himself, His Sovereignty, His Plans, His Resources, His Righteousness, His Holiness, His Immutability, and resting in Him.
It is known only to those whom He regenerates and in whom His Holy Spirit takes up residence. And because of His work in them, He causes to have a broken and contrite heart, and tremble at His Word. He saves and sanctifies. His children He causes to rest in Him. His Holy Spirit in them increasingly conforms them to be more and more a reflection of Himself- to take on the family likeness.
And when these, His blood washed regenerate children, are brought before authorities it is to answer for their faith. And they, by Him working in them and causing them to rest in Him, give an answer that is all about Him, His glory, His majesty, His works, His holiness. O they may stumble (in fear), but the Holy Spirit does His work in His own for His glory.
Help us, O Lord, to know our hope that is in You more and more and to rest in You alone for the sake of Your glory.
Amen Kim!
