Charles Spurgeon Quote on Moral Preaching

“Many preachers have had to confess the uselessness of mere moral preaching. There is no instance, I believe, on record, where the mere preaching of the law made a man love God, or where the heart ever was, or ever could be, renewed by inculcating good works.”

  1. If they would just preach election for no reason but God’s mercy. That might renew their hearts and love for God. I tried that and it worked for me. Thank you God!!

  2. Mike,
It looks like I didn’t finish a thought. I tried that on others and it seemed to fall on deaf ears. It did work for me and I think I remind myself of that daily. It is so profound to realize that God chose us! I am really grateful as the truth sets you free from those works mentioned. Praise God!

  3. Deb,

For me when I preach to myself these things I get so full of joy that I want to share it with everyone. That is what usually brings me back to reality when most people don’t want to hear it. Yet, I still rejoice because, as you said, the truth sets us free.

  4. Just a reminder, Deb, even if Calvin was correct, people still are saved by some Arminian preachers who hold fast to the gospel truth.

Oh the miracle, oh the majesty, oh the simplicity, oh the glory, oh the humility, oh the depth, and oh the priviliege that God has bestowed upon mere men. To think that God uses imperfect conduits to accomplish His eternal work through the foolishness of preaching should humble us to our very core. And when it is finally revealed, and we know as we are known, it will be evident to all of heaven’s hosts how flawed we were and how perfect God is, and in that knowlege there will be no competitors to the glory of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.

    To His glory alone, indeed!

  5. Rick, yeah, I was one of those. God saves His people regardless of the imperfect people ministering to them. He is truly amazing. That is why we rejoice and are so grateful. If it was up to us to get it exactly right then I doublt if anyone would get saved.

  6. Rick,

Amen!! ( just a note, Calvin is right) :) I just found this out in early 2006 and nothing has changed me so much and the joy is something I lacked until then. I used to pray for that joy back in the mid 90′s. I still love you anyway Rick..:) You are my brother in Christ :) All of my relatives are Arminian as far as I know but I still love them, too.

  7. Only God’s chosen see this.

Only God regenerates a heart for His purpose and our own good. Only God can use bent tools for His purpose and our own good. Only God can soften a man’s heart and Only God hardens a man’s heart always for His glory and not our own. For Thine is the Kingdom, the Power and Glory be Yours for ever and ever. Amen

    Psalm 115
    To Your Name Give Glory
1(A) Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory,
    (B) for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!
    2Why should the nations say,
    (C) “Where is their God?”
    3(D) Our God is in the heavens;
    (E) he does all that he pleases.

  8. Oh my, I just realized who you are.
Some of the things you write have been pasted to a board I tend to regularly.
