If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. Matthew 16:24-25
If God has called you to be truly like Jesus in all your spirit, He will draw you into a life of crucifixion and humility. He will put on you such demands of obedience that you will not be allowed to follow other Christians. In many ways, He seems to let other good people do things which He will not let you do.
Others who seem to be very religious and useful may push themselves, pull wires, and scheme to carry out their plans, but you cannot. If you attempt it, you will meet with such failure and rebuke from the Lord as to make you sorely penitent.
Others can brag about themselves, their work, their successes, their writings, but the Holy Spirit will not allow you to do any such thing. If you begin to do so, He will lead you into some deep mortification that will make you despise yourself and all your good works.
Others will be allowed to succeed in making great sums of money, or having a legacy left to them, or in having luxuries, but God may supply you only on a day-to-day basis, because He wants you to have something far better than gold, a helpless dependence on Him and His unseen treasury.
The Lord may let others be honored and put forward while keeping you hidden in obscurity because He wants to produce some choice, fragrant fruit for His coming glory, which can only be produced in the shade.
God may let others be great, but keep you small. He will let others do a work for Him and get the credit, but He will make you work and toil without knowing how much you are doing. Then, to make your work still more precious, He will let others get the credit for the work which you have done; this to teach you the message of the Cross, humility, and something of the value of being cloaked with His nature.
The Holy Spirit will put a strict watch on you, and with a jealous love rebuke you for careless words and feelings, or for wasting your time, which other Christians never seem distressed over.
So make up your mind that God is an infinite Sovereign and has a right to do as He pleases with His own, and that He may not explain to you a thousand things which may puzzle your reason in His dealings with you.
God will take you at your word. If you absolutely sell yourself to be His slave, He will wrap you up in a jealous love and let other people say and do many things that you cannot. Settle it forever; you are to deal directly with the Holy Spirit, He is to have the privilege of tying your tongue or chaining your hand or closing your eyes in ways which others are not dealt with. However, know this great secret of the Kingdom: When you are so completely possessed with the Living God that you are, in your secret heart, pleased and delighted over this peculiar, personal, private, jealous guardianship and management of the Holy Spirit over your life, you will have found the vestibule of heaven, the high calling of God.
If they would just preach election for no reason but God’s mercy. That might renew their hearts and love for God. I tried that and it worked for me. Thank you God!!
Deb,
Yes, it is a good and vital thing to preach to ourselves these things. Our hearts need to hear the truth contstantly.

Mike,
It looks like I didn’t finish a thought. I tried that on others and it seemed to fall on deaf ears. It did work for me and I think I remind myself of that daily. It is so profound to realize that God chose us! I am really grateful as the truth sets you free from those works mentioned. Praise God!
Deb,
For me when I preach to myself these things I get so full of joy that I want to share it with everyone. That is what usually brings me back to reality when most people don’t want to hear it. Yet, I still rejoice because, as you said, the truth sets us free.

Just a reminder, Deb, even if Calvin was correct, people still are saved by some Arminian preachers who hold fast to the gospel truth.
Oh the miracle, oh the majesty, oh the simplicity, oh the glory, oh the humility, oh the depth, and oh the priviliege that God has bestowed upon mere men. To think that God uses imperfect conduits to accomplish His eternal work through the foolishness of preaching should humble us to our very core. And when it is finally revealed, and we know as we are known, it will be evident to all of heaven’s hosts how flawed we were and how perfect God is, and in that knowlege there will be no competitors to the glory of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
To His glory alone, indeed!
Rick, yeah, I was one of those. God saves His people regardless of the imperfect people ministering to them. He is truly amazing. That is why we rejoice and are so grateful. If it was up to us to get it exactly right then I doublt if anyone would get saved.
Rick,
Amen!! ( just a note, Calvin is right)
I just found this out in early 2006 and nothing has changed me so much and the joy is something I lacked until then. I used to pray for that joy back in the mid 90′s. I still love you anyway Rick..:) You are my brother in Christ
All of my relatives are Arminian as far as I know but I still love them, too.
Only God’s chosen see this.
Only God regenerates a heart for His purpose and our own good. Only God can use bent tools for His purpose and our own good. Only God can soften a man’s heart and Only God hardens a man’s heart always for His glory and not our own. For Thine is the Kingdom, the Power and Glory be Yours for ever and ever. Amen
Psalm 115
To Your Name Give Glory
1(A) Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory,
(B) for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!
2Why should the nations say,
(C) “Where is their God?”
3(D) Our God is in the heavens;
(E) he does all that he pleases.
Amen David!
Amen David! You remind me of Derrick who lurks around. I wonder what happened to him?
Oh my, I just realized who you are.
