We have been looking at genuine Humility in the last few posts. We have seen within these studies that believers are called to role of reconciliation, forgiveness, loving our enemies, and turning the other cheek by being Spirit-filled. Also, the genuinely humble believer will not be timid, but bold.
Part of being bold because of the moving of the Holy Spirit within us is to proclaim the truth even if it takes the form of a rebuke. We are told to love our enemies, but we must not have unity with professing believers who are mired in heresy. On the other hand, those in apostasy must be rebuked in love with the goal of restoring them to fellowship and unity within God’s truth.
Much of the Bible is prophetic in nature. A large part of those prophecies take the form of God rebuking His people for their apostasy as well as declaring His coming judgment upon the world for their rebellion against Him and His ways.
One such prophet was Ezekiel. His book opens with him witnessing the glory of God in a magnificent vision. His account of it in Ezekiel 1 is utterly amazing. It is obvious that when he wrote it that he was struggling to describe the indescribable. In v26-28 Ezekiel describes his reaction to seeing this.
And above the expanse over their heads there was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like sapphire; and seated above the likeness of a throne was a likeness with a human appearance. And upward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were gleaming metal, like the appearance of fire enclosed all around. And downward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and there was brightness around him. Like the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking. (Ezekiel 1:26-28 ESV)
I marvel at those nowadays who claim to have had personal visits from our Lord. They never describe a reaction to God’s glory like Ezekiel’s. I am sure that none of us could stand in His presence even if we only had a glimpse of His magnificent glory.
And he said to me, “Son of man, stand on your feet, and I will speak with you.” And as he spoke to me, the Spirit entered into me and set me on my feet, and I heard him speaking to me. And he said to me, “Son of man, I send you to the people of Israel, to nations of rebels, who have rebelled against me. They and their fathers have transgressed against me to this very day. The descendants also are impudent and stubborn: I send you to them, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD.’ (Ezekiel 2:1-4 ESV)
Notice that God commanded Ezekiel to stand, but he could not until the Spirit entered into him and set him on his feet. All of God’s commands to His people are like this. He commands us, but it only in the power of the Holy Spirit that we can obey Him. What is Ezekiel’s mission? He is being sent by God to the Jews to say, “Thus says the Lord God.” Why?
And whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious house) they will know that a prophet has been among them. (Ezekiel 2:5 ESV)
God is going to make sure that those to whom Ezekiel prophesies will know that God has sent him and that he is a prophet indeed. Notice that God is not guaranteeing to Ezekiel that his mission or ministry will be a success as people measure success. Instead, some will believe while others won’t. God will be glorified either way.
And you, son of man, be not afraid of them, nor be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns are with you and you sit on scorpions. Be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house. (Ezekiel 2:6 ESV)
Ezekiel’s ministry will cause his hearers to become hostile, but God commands him to not be afraid of them or their words. He is to proclaim the truth directly from God, but he is not to expect any repentance. Instead, it will be as if he is being constantly struck with briers and thorns while sitting amongst scorpions. In other words, for all his preaching and prophecy, he will receive nothing but antagonism from those to whom God sent Him.
And you shall speak my words to them, whether they hear or refuse to hear, for they are a rebellious house. “But you, son of man, hear what I say to you. Be not rebellious like that rebellious house; open your mouth and eat what I give you.” And when I looked, behold, a hand was stretched out to me, and behold, a scroll of a book was in it. And he spread it before me. And it had writing on the front and on the back, and there were written on it words of lamentation and mourning and woe. (Ezekiel 2:7-10 ESV)
God gives Ezekiel a scroll. God infers that he is to eat the book. Ezekiel looks at the writing that is on the front and back. The words there are of lamentation and mourning and woe. His ministry will be one of rebuke that is full of grief and hard words. He will not become popular with those to whom he ministers will he? Notice again that God directs him to eat the book. What does that mean? Ezekiel was not to literally eat the pages of the book, but he was to spiritually receive God’s message in such a way that it would become his inward passion. Does this not describe the same process by which we become Spirit-filled? If we internalize God’s Word, permeating our entire being with it, we will become controlled by its power that is the Holy Spirit.
And he said to me, “Son of man, eat whatever you find here. Eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel.” So I opened my mouth, and he gave me this scroll to eat. And he said to me, “Son of man, feed your belly with this scroll that I give you and fill your stomach with it.” Then I ate it, and it was in my mouth as sweet as honey. (Ezekiel 3:1-3 ESV)
The message from God was judgment, but, since it is God’s Word and it also vindicated His holiness, righteousness, glory, and faithfulness, it is sweet as honey.
And he said to me, “Son of man, go to the house of Israel and speak with my words to them. For you are not sent to a people of foreign speech and a hard language, but to the house of Israel– not to many peoples of foreign speech and a hard language, whose words you cannot understand. Surely, if I sent you to such, they would listen to you. But the house of Israel will not be willing to listen to you, for they are not willing to listen to me. Because all the house of Israel have a hard forehead and a stubborn heart. Behold, I have made your face as hard as their faces, and your forehead as hard as their foreheads. Like emery harder than flint have I made your forehead. Fear them not, nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house.” Moreover, he said to me, “Son of man, all my words that I shall speak to you receive in your heart, and hear with your ears. And go to the exiles, to your people, and speak to them and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD,’ whether they hear or refuse to hear.” (Ezekiel 3:4-11 ESV)
In this passage we see that Ezekiel’s sufficiency in his ministry comes from God enabling him to be so. Ezekiel’s name in Hebrew means, “strengthened by God.” Ezekiel’s ability to live up to his name comes from God. This strength will enable him to faithfully prophesy to the Jews whether they hear or refuse to hear or whether they attack or don’t attack him.
Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard behind me the voice of a great earthquake: “Blessed be the glory of the LORD from its place!” It was the sound of the wings of the living creatures as they touched one another, and the sound of the wheels beside them, and the sound of a great earthquake. The Spirit lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness in the heat of my spirit, the hand of the LORD being strong upon me. (Ezekiel 3:12-14 ESV)
The Word of God is as sweet as honey because it is the truth and it glorifies Him. However, that does not mean that His Word does not also contain rebuke and judgment. God sends those who proclaim His truth. I would doubt that any of them had a vision like Ezekiel’s to prepare them for their ministries, but that does not mean that when these men stand in the gap and prophesy the truth they aren’t being led spiritually in their obedience to speak lamentations, mourning and woe. However, to the man, I also would not doubt that they know all about the sweetness of God’s Word and the Bitterness in the heat of their Spirit that comes from obeying Him in proclaiming it. The Apostle John also experienced this.
Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me again, saying, “Go, take the scroll that is open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.” So I went to the angel and told him to give me the little scroll. And he said to me, “Take and eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.” And I took the little scroll from the hand of the angel and ate it. It was sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it my stomach was made bitter. And I was told, “You must again prophesy about many peoples and nations and languages and kings.” (Revelation 10:8-11 ESV)
In our day and time the apostates have overrun the Church. Their leaders are becoming progressively more and more apostate with each sermon they preach and each book they publish. There are the Word-Faith preachers who have totally misinterpreted scripture so they can become wealthy by duping millions to give them their money. Then there are the emergents who don’t like “church” or even being called Christians. They want a new reformation to form the church into something cool. The neo-Evangelicals are all about easy-believism to the point that their “gospel” is not longer the Gospel from the Bible. Cults are becoming recognized as mainstream Christians. These are only a few examples.
What are we supposed to do? Are we to fight or are we to do nothing or are we to love them? If we fight them, we will use tactics that are not edifying because it will be born from our flesh. If we do nothing then we are being self-protective and are actually being timid in our fear of being harshly treated by those who refuse to hear. However, if we choose the third option, which is to love them, does that mean we accept their apostasy and love them like brothers, accepting them with open arms? No! It means that we rebuke them based entirely from God’s Word. His Word will be sweet as honey in our mouths as we lovingly share the truth from God’s Word and why we are shining His light into their ministries. We do this boldly with the goal of restoration, but we must not flinch when the bulk of them refuse to hear. It is when their defenders come after us that we will experience the bitterness in the heat of the Spirit.
Are you willing to stand in the gap, sword drawn, filled with God’s Word and empowered by the Holy Spirit? If so, then you will know the sweetness of God’s Word and you must not become dismayed when the bitterness comes upon you in the heat of your Spirit. God’s will be done!
Soli Deo Gloria!
Mike, it’s my experience that the majority of the emergent Christians cannot be catagorized as apostates, as none of them believe the same thing as the next guy. They’re not this cohesive group and anti churchians, it’s not as conspiracy-like as I see it made out to be, they’re not even a big group, they’re people held together by the fact that they share the same name, essentially. They like to ask too many questions sometimes, and they like to figure out why we believe what we do. That’s mostly the common theme I see when I ‘converse’ with them. I’ve seen so many different views come out of different ‘emergent christians’, no less than different views coming out of the heavy doctrinal camp, that they can’t be all blanketed as ‘apostate’ any more than many reformed people are ‘apostate’.
We gotta be careful throwing the word ‘apostate’ around, especially to untold thousands of men and women we don’t know at all personally, in word or deed. Just because some of their ‘leaders’, if you could say such a loose group has actual leaders, who differ greatly from each other on their belies as well, say some crazy stuff, doesn’t mean all, most, or even some of the emerging Christians are apostate and unsaved. That’s generalization of the worst kind, I feel. I’m with you all the way for standing on Truth and defending it, but we need to be careful how we catagorize people, and lump them all together as false. Which is what I think you’ve done here with the last part of your post.
I hope this finds you well
Your friend,
Joe
A posting of such encouragement. Thank you Mike, for directing us to the Word of the LORD and the LORD of the Word for our comfort and edification.
Mike,
I thank the Lord that He has given me assurance by His Word and by His servants and I thank you for your encouragement and prayers.
The sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God is a most effective weapon only by familiarity with it. This sWord has cut my wife and I clear of the Man Centered & Purpose Driven church and pointed us towards finding, in my wife’s words, a “Christ Centered and Bible Driven Church.” Certainly there is great pain and a sour stomach with this cut but how sweet it is to read or hear God’s Word and be filled with the comfort and assurance that only God can give.
In God I have put my trust; I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?
In Christ,
Paul
Joe,
Thanks for the comment, but I disagree with you on the emergents not being apostates. They most certainly are, but to various degrees. What I was leaning for here was to expose the apostasy of their leaders which are Mclaren and McMannis. There are others to be sure. There messages may differ, but they are all apostasy becuase their religion is all about self. That is apostasy.

Thank you Kim!
You are welcome Paul and amen to your comment! I know you are in the fire, but I also know God is upholding you and opening your hearts to His light. Yes, His truth is sweet as honey, but when it hits the man-focused churhces right in the face there is bitterness coming to those who stand firm and will not be part of the apostasy.

Thanks for this post. It was these passages in Ezekiel that the Lord used to prompt me to confront my brother. I didn’t want to do it and kept procrastinating because I knew he would not receive correction, even in a loving spirit. Unable to feel settled for three days and nights, I finally wrote him. My brother needed to know things that Christians do not do if they love Jesus. I received a scathing letter (more like a book ) back from him that had he not signed it, I would have thought that satan himself wrote it! It broke my heart because it was filled with lies (of things he has told my family along with the things of my forgiven past )and ended with him not wanting anything to do with me. I take comfort that I obeyed the Lord in this and that He showed me beforehand, here in this passage of Ezekiel, that it would not be well received. I just did not expect my brother to also turn my family against me! That was a surprise to me. The Lord showed me that my brother’s church (of which he attends only when he is in any trouble) believes in tolerance of all people because Jesus was tolerant. Now I know why I was to be tolerant of my brother’s ungodly behavior! Truth be told, he is not a Christian and his pastor lets him believe he is. And his pastor ought to know better since he has delivered the angry man many times! Well, he is my “enemy”. And this passage has brought me comfort. It reminded me of that which I had forgotten- that is of the burden and urging through this passage, which is a confirmnation, that I obeyed the Lord. And I would do it again if it be the Lord’s will. It has taught me much and I am still learning because of it.
Sherry C.,
Yes, you know all about the bitterness part my sister. Why do we take these stands? Isn’t because God’s truth is as sweet as honey! It is wonderful and when we revel in His glory we can plainly see the apostasy all around us. We must do, as you did, what God directs. Never stop loving your brother, but also never compromise.

Indeed, why do we confront the apostate Christian (they say they are Christian but we are grieved knowing better)? It is love for God’s Word and His true character. We know what His Word says about such apostates. We know bitterness because we know their end and because we know that many will follow these apostates to the same fateful end. We feel heaviness because we cannot love them through tolerance of their behavior which is blasphemy of our God. Too many Christians love their fellow Christians (even if in name only ) right into hell by thinking that love means tolerance. That is why we get besmirched for obeying the Lord in confronting error-we aren’t tolerant! Let’s continue to do so, no matter the cost, because it is the Lord’s love for the apostate(s) displayed through us that is the reason for the confrontation. If we grieve it is because our Lord grieves; and we are bound to know it because His Holy Spirit dwells in us. If we depend on God’s wisdom and strength and prayer, we can stand for truth with boldness and grace and have no regrets in our obedience to His promptings.
A further comment on what Joe wrote. We need to remember that their are only two religions/world view systems.
(1)There is religion /world view system that is faith based on the revelation of God as written in His Word.
(2)There is religion / world view system that is reason based on the reasoning and thoughts of man as man ponders or reflects on the world around him and even sometimes as he ponders or reflects on scripture.
All false religions / world view systems make the same mistake (they trust in their own reasoning) and then it spreads out differently and we get a vast variety of apostasy and cults.
Point of clarification: Only those to whom God the Holy Spirit has shed abroad the light of His truth in their minds and to whom He has given a new mind, new eyes to see, and new ears to hear- only the regenerate have a world view system or faith based on revelation. For only those will understand and know with certainty His revelation is Truth. It is gifted in regeneration.
Well said Sherry C.!
Amen and well said Kim!
“Too many Christians love their fellow Christians (even if in name only) right into hell by thinking that love means tolerance. That is why we get besmirched for obeying the Lord in confronting error-we aren’t tolerant! Let’s continue to do so, no matter the cost…” Amen Sherry C!!! I think this same thing all the time. The church often overlooks sin in the name of “forgiveness” and lets it continue in a person’s life to their detriment, when our Lord wants us to step out in the uncomfortable position of rebuke. Sometimes this will bring about change in the person’s heart to our surprise, and other times like your situation we have to be content with the fact we obeyed. (And you never know what work the Spirit is doing in your brother, even now, for your faithfulness.
I sometimes think a majority of the church today would accuse Jesus of “unforgiveness,” were he here at a church meeting in the flesh speaking today. Great article Mike!
Good comment, Kim (#10). I’m trying to get a friend to see that very thing. She and her husband are looking for a new church right now and they are heavily leaning toward Imago Dei, Rick McKinley’s church here in Portland. My friend told me that no matter what verses I give her from Scripture, she probably wouldn’t be swayed by them because she feels comfortable at Imago Dei and likes their philosophy. In other words, her fleshly needs being met is more important than the Truth. This is a very sad situation as I watch my friend slip off into self-righteousness and pride. The false humility within much of the emergent church is sickening and it’s killing people.

I am on the outs with my brother.also. I was accused of being devisive and not knowing the Bible. (Jesus went to hell NOT) No throwing stones though. Neither one of us is perfect. He attends a mega charismatic churh that I doubt confronts him or anyone else. My parents church allows young girls to wear short-shorts to worship services. My other brother is a former J.W., now more new age than anything, told me I’m one of those narrow minded people. It’s all laodicea and that’s why I didn’t go to church for years.
Good comment Carol! When I have been in a “battle” with “emergents” in the past they really tried to get me to see that standing and not wavering on the truth is a form of pride. They were being humble because they stood for comfortable and convenient preaching and everyone just getting along. What is tragic, as you and Sherry said, that is blinding and killing people. That is why we must be bold and tell the truth.

Yes it is Laodicea Deb. That means that God’s judgment is no longer eminent, but is happening right now. These people have been given over to their idols. Tragic!
Mike,
It is tragic and sad. I just keep praying that God wakes his sleeping children. He woke us up. It might not be in a pleasant experience but he got our attention.
Thank You, Father! We are very very very blessed.
I pray that my brother, and yours, Deborah, will come to see the truth. Once Confused, I do pray that my brother will see that it was the Lord who loves him and was trying to warn him. May the Holy Spirit do a good work in him. The fear of standing before God, having said nothing, was greater than my fear of losing my brother’s relationship. Truth is eternal, discomfort and heartbreak is not (though this has gone on for two years too long!
).
Sherry C,
Your such a sweet sister. Could you move west about 150 miles. I could use a sister. I only have brothers. yuk
Deborah, I think I live closer to you than that! I live slightly west of Chicago in Northern Illinois. My hubby will pack my bags if I say “yes” ! Just kidding! It’s about my pesky dog not me or my cooking.
Hey! I only have a brother, too! Praise God, though, cuz we are sisters in Christ. Can’t wait for the family reunion! I have the best family in the whole world!
I talked to a guy about the doctrine of Grace. T.U.L.I.P He comes into the store on occasion to look at the vacuums. I had Christian music on the radio so just before he left he must have noticed and asked. I found out he preaches at a non denom service about 40 miles away. He never heard of tulip but is going to check into it. God, please let that bear fruit in his heart. I would have a place to worship!!
The message from God was judgment, but, since it is God’s Word and it also vindicated His holiness, … it is sweet as honey.
In the “Religious Affections”, Jonathan Edwards said that the great and mighty attributes of God would be terrible if not for the Holiness of God. That is, God’s supremacy, sovereignty, knowledge, power, wrath, etc. would be horrible if He was not Holy. God’s Holiness makes all His other attributes, and even His judgments, righteous, glorious, and sweet as honey.
Edwards also said that the professing Christian is in awe of God’s power and strength, while the true Christian is in awe of God’s Holiness.
SOUND THE ALARM
Subject: Huckabee Purpose Driven
http://www.mikehuckabee.com/index.cfm?FuseAction=Blogs.View&Blog_id=658
Don’t know if you all know this yet …but baptist preacher 2008 Rep. Pres. candidate Huckabee is Purpose Driven (PD).
Ref. Link is to Huckabee’s official web page above…his blog…Huckabee uses PD’s founder, Rick Warren’s quote…hoping for an official endorsement from him. Purpose Driven is a cult that has taken over the mainstream church.
SERIOUS PROBLEM: There are 38.8 million baptist in the USA. This is what has spiked Huckabee ahead in the polls suddenly. This could spell disaster for the US if these millions of baptists vote. Approx. 50% of voters vote, then say, the last election went something like 62 million for Bush vs. 59 million for Kerry-Dems. —you see, now in 2008, we have 38 million baptist….then, add on to that, millions of foolish nonbaptist christians who will get on the bandwagon–especially, if Dobson and other ‘leaders’ endorse Huckabee? Huckabee has the baptist’s vote…then, think if PD Warren does official endorse him. Huckabee is the worst choice on the republican ticket–and the ‘chrisians’ are fixed to give us another Bush. I’ve friends personally who were PD ‘resisters’ and were thrown out of Lamar Baptist Church in TX. Huckabee (and you know the baptist demonination has fully accepted PD false teachings) does not recognize the error of PD—what kind of christian is he–another deluded one, like universalist GW?
