Rick Warren and Compromise

by Mike Ratliff

“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.” (Matthew 5:33-37 ESV)

Hypocrisy is something that we must all diligently work with the Father to expose and kill within the heart. The act of compromise results in hypocrisy. Some compromise that is based outside of God’s commands could possibly be an exception to this, but when it comes to the Christian’s call to obedience to God, compromise is disobedience and this is sin. Those deep into their compromise have become hardened to the conviction that they are deliberately sinning so we see them do some sort of dance when they say one thing to please one group while saying something else to try to appease others who are contending with him or her about their stance. It is hard to pin down some hypocrites, but God is expert at it. He will not let professing Christians get away with this very long. Either they will respond by coming to the throne of grace seeking forgiveness and the cleansing of God granting repentance or they will harden their hearts and continue to slide down the slippery slope of compromise.

The following is an excerpt from an article at OneNewsNow.com

California mega-church pastor and author of The Purpose Driven Life Rick Warren says he apologized to his homosexual friends for making comments in support of California’s Proposition 8, and now claims he “never once even gave an endorsement” of the marriage amendment.

Monday night on CNN’s Larry King Live, Pastor Rick Warren apologized for his support of Prop. 8, California’s voter-approved marriage protection amendment, saying he has “never been and never will be” an “anti-gay or anti-gay marriage activist.”

”During the whole Proposition 8 thing, I never once went to a meeting, never once issued a statement, never — never once even gave an endorsement in the two years Prop. 8 was going,” Warren told the CNN audience on Monday. ”The week before the — the vote, somebody in my church said, ‘Pastor Rick, what — what do you think about this?’ And I sent a note to my own members that said, I actually believe that marriage is — really should be defined, that that definition should be — say between a man and a woman.”

However, just two weeks before the November 4 Prop. 8 vote, Pastor Warren issued a clear endorsement of the marriage amendment while speaking to church members. ”We support Proposition 8 — and if you believe what the Bible says about marriage, you need to support Proposition 8,” he said.

The following is a complete transcript of Warren’s comments just weeks before the Prop. 8 election:

“The election’s coming just in a couple of weeks, and I hope you’re praying about your vote. One of the propositions, of course, that I want to mention is Proposition 8, which is the proposition that had to be instituted because the courts threw out the will of the people. And a court of four guys actually voted to change a definition of marriage that has been going for 5,000 years.

“Now let me say this really clearly: we support Proposition 8 — and if you believe what the Bible says about marriage, you need to support Proposition 8. I never support a candidate, but on moral issues I come out very clear.

“This is one thing, friends, that all politicians tend to agree on. Both Barack Obama and John McCain, I flat-out asked both of them: what is your definition of marriage? And they both said the same thing — it is the traditional, historic, universal definition of marriage: one man and one woman, for life. And every culture for 5,000 years, and every religion for 5,000 years, has said the definition of marriage is between one man and a woman.

Now here’s an interesting thing. There are about two percent of Americans [who] are homosexual or gay/lesbian people. We should not let two percent of the population determine to change a definition of marriage that has been supported by every single culture and every single religion for 5,000 years.

“This is not even just a Christian issue — it’s a humanitarian and human issue that God created marriage for the purpose of family, love, and procreation.

”So I urge you to support Proposition 8, and pass that word on. I’m going to be sending out a note to pastors on what I believe about this. But everybody knows what I believe about it. They heard me at the Civil Forum when I asked both Obama and McCain on their views.”

During his CNN interview on Monday, Warren expressed regret for backing Prop. 8. ”There were a number of things that were put out. I wrote to all my gay friends — the leaders that I knew — and actually apologized to them. That never got out,” he admitted.

Additionally, Pastor Warren said he did not want to comment on or criticize the Iowa Supreme Court’s decision last week to legalize same-sex “marriage” because it was “not his agenda.”

Rick Warren has the moves of a politician. He seems to believe that he can lie and get away with it. I find several disturbing things in this article. The first is the obvious hypocrisy to publicly support Proposition 8 then deny that he did. When he is pinned down about this then he comes out in support of his “gay friends” and is concerned that a stance by a supposed evangelical Christian Pastor that the Word of God saying that homosexuality is an abomination to God would be offensive to them. Pastor Warren, this tells us that you do not consider the Word of God to be authoritative. You do not accept Sola Scriptura. Also, your “dance” around this obvious self-protective act of hypocrisy calls for you to come before the Body of Christ and confess your sins and then show the fruits of repentance by becoming separate from those cultural things that are causing you to compromise.

The death of a church begins when the leadership and body of believers tolerate sin. Eventually, a church that does this will die. What does this tell us when it is “America’s Pastor” who is doing this?

Soli Deo Gloria!

  1. Rather than be pleasing to the One and Only Holy and Righteous God, Rick Warren keeps compromising in order to please men. Anyone who has watched him over the years has to see what is happening. How sad.

  2. That’s a question I ask myself often. How can anyone be so blind? But they are. We all have access to the Word of God, but some are trusting others to lead them, without checking for themselves. There is a reason that the Bereans were commended for going to God’s Word to make sure they were being taught the Truth.

My experience has been that most do not consider questioning anyone in authority, particularly pastors, to be loving and kind. We are called “judgmental” and “Pharisaical.” It plays right into the enemy’s hands!

  3. Marriage is not a contract between two people. Devine Design Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve or Amanda and Eve. The world have made marriage a contract and not a covenant with God! They say it is ok if you are unhappy go your own way with someone else. Proverbs talks about these type of women, but back in the ’70 it was men walking out on their wives. Tables are turned, just like it states in scripture…in Is 3. It will be a repeat of what the bible speaks about. Woman over me and children over all, it happened in the day of Hilter…It is happening again..God gives nations over 180 degrees from the right way and gives them over to the desires of a person’s heart…We all need to repent and ask for forgiveness for being a part of this society and we haven’t spoken out against it. It is all of our fault..Just like the prayer in Daniel Chapter 9!!!!! Please Lord have mercy upon all of us, for none follow your ways, in Your Name Christ Jesus we pray!!!!!!!!

    In Christ,
    David

  4. Why they do not see it? I like the bible’s answer to that question:

“For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.” 2 Timothy 4:3

I call it the “itching ear” syndrome!

    Great article!

  5. Rick’s whole theology is centered around pleasing man. That is why instead of the Gospel of forgiveness of sins, Warren gives a Gospel of Purpose. Luther calls this the gospel of “glory” rather than the gospel of the “cross”. It is a selling point to dress up the gospel. Since the world doesn’t like the gospel, he gives them a spoonful of pragmatic sugar to help the medicine go down. This is P.R. for Jesus. and it is definitely compromise, and compromise is the flagship of a politician. Did you know that Rick Warren has a P.R. Staff who probably told him to say all this stuff? A pastor…. with a P.R. team? I guess he is planning on succeeding where Jesus failed, in public relations. I am glad to here more people that aren’t charmed by this brilliant goat-herding marketeer. I just wish my enthusiasm for Christ and holiness matched the America’s Pastor’s zeal for “Purpose”.

  6. Amen Keith, good to hear from you brother. Yes, Rick has one foot in the world and one foot in the Church. His little empire is built on PR and pleasing people. The enemy has used him to blind so many. Keep going like you are brother and God will use you. :-)

  7. I don’t condemn Mr. Warren, but I believe his motives need to be drawn into serious scrutiny. Eventually the sheep’s clothing falls off and reveals the true nature and intent. I’m saddened that followers of his do not have the discernment to see what is truly going on. Especially in light of the “mass baptisms” and upwards of 10% increase in church membership in one day. To refer to this “event” as a “repeat of Pentacost” is quite frankly shocking and appalling. Who can compete with power of the Holy Spirit? I suggest Mr. Warren read The Soul Winner, by Spurgeon, and realize that such events can ultimately do more harm than good.

  8. Amen John, it is not our role to condemn. That role is God’s alone. However, we are to stand firm against all sin and apostasy in the Body of Christ and that is why I am calling for Rick Warren to repent.

  9. Larry King had on Joel Osteen not too long ago and that Pastor had an opportunity to lift up Christ alone as the only way to eternal life. He him-hawed around and could not do it. Now we have Rick Warren doing the same with gay marriage….WHY DON’T MEN OF GOD STAND UP AND LEAD!!!!!
WHen I look back on the HISTORY of the church , if a person can not STAND ALONE (like JESUS DID) and stand for the TRUTH then their whole testimony is compromised. Men pleasers are not burned at the stake. Men pleasers do not end up in prision. Men pleasers sell books, promote conferences, try to end world hunger and DILUTE THE TRUTH of God’s word. STEP ASIDE MEN PLEASERS…let the true men of God with the Fire of Revival and Repentence burning in their hearts come forward. Let the weeping prophets cry and weep over the sins of our nation and beg God for mercy. Our nation is in the valley of decision and we are choosing death and homosexuality and enslavement to the anti-christ!!!!

  10. I am not a fan of Rick Warren by any stretch of the imagination but I am disturbed by the goat herding name calling. I think that speaks more about the people under Rick Warrens sway and not about him. Deception can happen to geniune Christians and maybe we should have a little more charity for the people deceived by Warren. I myself have been deceived and when you are there you don’t realize it.

  11. Debbie,

I know what you mean for there was a time early in my restoration in 2004 in which I did the 40 days of Purpose. I didn’t get much out of it. Then when my pastor wanted to install the Purpose Driven Church, I and my wife left. I mourned a great deal, and still do, for many friends there who are deceived. It is quite sad. I don’t hate them, I grieve for them. Does this make sense? I am praying for Rick Warren to realize the damage he has done and repent of it. That may not happen until it is too late though. The man-pleasing form of church he espouses is not Christian so we must withstand it in the name of Christ with the goal of his and his followers repentance.

  12. Debbie,
I know how you feel. I felt the same way for several years. But I learned a great deal about how passionate people were in defending Rick Warren. Their passion did not give them guidance to the Word of God. Instead, they listened to Rick Warren’s false and water-down message. They saw his numbers and celebrity as God’s blessing and followed him. Pastors who knew better also participated.

We all have access to the Bible in this country. Too few of us are actually spending time studying it and contending for it. So, now several years later, as Warren is easily read, seen, and listened to, are people still being deceived? After the election, after the inaurguration, after so many opportunities for him to share the Truth of the Gospel… are they honestly still deceived by him, or by their own blindness?

I pray that the Lord would prod them and that they would seek the truth for themselves. Ultimately, we are each accountable for our own choices and can blame no one else.

  13. Hi Heather. I understand what you are saying. Ultimately we are responsible as Christians for reading our bibles and believing what God says. Are we deceived by out own hearts at times ? Yes we are. I know that we can be led deeper into deception by our unwillingness to heed the word of God. My problem was the goat herder comment not from what Mike had written. I thought it showed a lack of compassion for the people who are being misled. This is a spiritual battle with Satan trying to deceive as many as he can. As a new Chrisitan I was deceived at times as well. But the Lord had mercy and compassion on me and showed me the truth. I would like to show that mercy and compassion to others. That doesn’t mean not speaking the truth but tone is very important at times. I hope I have explained what I meant by my comment. Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Jude1: 22 And of some have compassion, making a difference 23: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating the garment spotted by the flesh. KJV Blessings Heather
