Fight the Good Fight of Faith

by Mike Ratliff

As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. (2 Timothy 4:5-8 ESV)

There is much terribly wrong going on right now in the visible Church. The main leaders of the emergent movement such as Brian McLaren are teaching rehashed heresies that deny the doctrines of Hell and Penal Substitution. The tragedy is how popular these teachings are with so many in the visible Church. These “fellows” deny all of the essential elements of the Gospel and then decry any teaching that proclaims its exclusivity. They proclaim that all of the world religions lead to God. Let us be honest my brethren. Isn’t there a drive or pull within us that proclaims all of the positive aspects of these false teachings? That “voice” tries to make us see how standing firm is so unpopular and all of this self-denial is sure excluding us from the majority. Those who finish the race by fighting the good fight and keeping the faith were never part of the “majority” or the “popular.” If that is so, then why do we even listen to that “voice?”

But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. (1 Timothy 6:11-12 ESV)

Polemics lead to division. That is the nature of the beast. If we stand firm and refuse to compromise with the world and those professing Christians who love being part of the majority as well as enjoying temporal pleasures while compartmentalizing their lives with their “faith” in a very obscure well-hidden spot that is restricted to Sunday mornings or “whatever” then there will be conflict between them and us. This small compartment in their lives has little to no affect on the rest of their lives except when it is to their advantage. The “these things” in v11 above is referring to the love of money. This would also include the love of possessions and the lifestyle that goes with accumulating much of the world’s goods. The one who is called to fight the good fight of faith is commanded to flee from these things. In place of pursuing what the world desires above all, we are to pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness. This is referring to Christlikeness my brethren and the exclusivity of that leaves no room for conformity to the world. This is why it is so obvious why the Seeker-Sensitive and Church growth movements are compromised. They attempt to conform to the culture in order to be more like the world so the unchurched will not be offended by the exclusivity of the Gospel.

This good fight of the faith requires self-denial and the taking up of one’s cross and then following Christ very closely. This is abiding in Christ as you are yoked up with Him. This is walking through this life as a living sacrifice. This is running the race set before us with eyes firmly fixed on Christ. This is only possible for those who draw near unto God in prayer and immersion into His Word. Then Christ’s character will become manifest more and more as humility increases and pride is diminished as the flesh is denied continually. Mind renewal is used by the Holy Spirit to lead us into the correct path, which is to take hold of the eternal life to which we are called. The Greek word used here that is translated “Take hold” is ἐπιλαμβάνομαι or epilambanomai. This verb is in aorist tense, imperative mood, and middle voice. All this means is that is a command, request, or entreaty in which the action is done to or affects oneself. This is much more than simply learning the meaning of what Paul is talking about. It is referring to laying hold of these words then assuming them just as Christ took upon Himself human nature of the seed of Abraham (Galatians 3:16). Therefore, what we are being commanded to do here is to become totally immersed in the fact that we have this eternal life and along with that we live out or walk out our lives accordingly. We are to be defined by the fact that we have this eternal life and that excludes it from being just being an add-on to our lives or something compartmentalized into obscurity.

I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which he will display at the proper time–he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen. (1 Timothy 6:13-16 ESV)

To fight the good fight of faith is to stand firm against all who desire to take the Gospel and edit it to please men. Any attempt to change it is to create something else that is not the Gospel, but is stained with compromise and reproach. We are told here to never stop defending God’s Truth until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. When leaven is found in the body of Christ, we are to expose it and warn the brethren to avoid it and those who teach it because a little leaven leavens the whole lump. I know so many in these last days who decry what I just said. They hold in derision all who point out false teachings and those who teach them. I know one who used to comment here quite a bit, but who now writes things such as those who stand firm against apostasy and heresies don’t really know Christ or are not Christians because they are being judgmental. That used to hurt a bit since he has included me in some of this stuff mainly because I refuse to back off of the exclusivity of the Gospel and that God’s grace does not trump His holiness and justice. What God calls sin is sin. Those who know this, but excuse themselves from walking in repentance in order to walk in compromise are giving evidence of an unregenerate heart.

One of this man’s “friends” linked to my article of George Tiller’s murder saying that I had “wished” for God to exclude him from heaven for being a mass murderer of the unborn. I never said any such thing. His article seemed to be saying that all that is required to be included in God’s Kingdom is a profession of faith. Tiller claimed to be Christian, but killed thousands of unborn babies. This paradox bothered me some and I did not address the article in any way nor do I intend to. However, I did read part of Nehemiah today in which he prayed to God the following prayer:

Hear, O our God, for we are despised. Turn back their taunt on their own heads and give them up to be plundered in a land where they are captives. Do not cover their guilt, and let not their sin be blotted out from your sight, for they have provoked you to anger in the presence of the builders. (Nehemiah 4:4-5 ESV)

What is he praying here? This is referring to the enemies of those attempting to obey God in building the wall of Jerusalem and restore proper worship of God in the Temple and every day life. These enemies attempted to stop the work to discourage those standing firm and obeying God. Nehemiah prayed for God to turn their wickedness back on them and not forgive them. Wow! How unforgiving of Nehemiah! Yes, I know that our Lord told us to pray for our enemies and not return evil for evil and we must obey Him. However, there are some interesting statements made in the last chapter of Revelation.

I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.” And he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near. Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy, and the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy.” “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay everyone for what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.” The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price. I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book. (Revelation 22:8-19 ESV)

Yes, let us pray for our enemies that they repent. When professing Christians do evil things and refuse to repent then we should pray for them that God will draw them to repent, but if they do not then they are in His hands and that is scary. The unrepentant sexually immoral, murderers, idolaters and liars are excluded from the tree of life. These would be the unrepentant ones though because we know that God can and will save even people who have done very wickedly, but the key is that they prove that they are of Christ because they walk in repentance.

Meditate on these things my brethren. Are you fighting the good fight of faith or are you seeking to pollute the truth by distorting the very words of our Lord, giving license to the wicked? We are told over and over in God’s Word that genuine believers give evidence of their faith through their conformity to the character of Christ. No one in this life will be perfect, but Christians walk in repentance and even those struggling mightily with sin will never be a peace with it if they are New Creations in Christ.

Soli Deo Gloria!

  1. Amen Mike, you are fighting the ‘good fight’. I encourage you brother… Persevere… Endure… Love… and we will not be disappointed. We will not be put to shame! All glory belongs to Him and we stand that He might be glorified in the eyes of men!

  2. You said a mouthful just with these words Mike, “We are told over and over in God’s Word that genuine believers give evidence of their faith through their conformity to the character of Christ.” NOT conformity to the culture, but conformity to the character of Christ. How many times in history has the culture and the character of Christ lined up to be one and the same?

  3. Thank you, Mike.

Many years ago a brother in the Lord encouraged me with this scripture that also is edifying to those who “earnestly contend for the faith” (Jude 3)
    and it is this:
“For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. ” Heb. 12:3

In pondering the verses you posted above and “considering” what Jesus did for us on the cross, I can only fall at His feet in praise and thanks.

In this unglorified body which longs for the day of glorification, may we continue to “fight the good fight”, using the weapon given by the Lord– The Sword of the Spirit. Heb 4:12.

Thank you for the warnings to The Church and your edifying words, brother Mike.

Posse Non Peccare–> Non Posse Peccare!

  4. Keep fighting the good fight Mike!
When you blend error with truth you have destroyed the truth. You no longer have a mixture of truth and error; you have error. The churches today are compromising the truth for “numbers” and I dare to say that many folks are being led down the wrong path and think they are saved when in fact they really are not, and that is scary.

The stronger you fight the good fight Mike, the more you will be attacked. I am finding too many folks sacrafice the truth for friendship.

  5. In my case, most of the persecution my husband and I receive is not from the world but the people in our church. I would welcome it from unbelievers…it is very discouraging that it comes from those professing Christ.
Is Jesus enough? I ask myself that a lot.
We need fellowship and God will see to it that it is the right fellowship. If you are willing to give Him this right in your life, your associations, He will show you with whom you are to fellowship. It has been amazing to me how He has taken people out of my life without knowing why only to find out later how He has protected me. Praise Him!
I do not wish to go along to get along. Easier to accomplish concerning the big moral issues, but the little things are what trip me up. We all so want to belong.
    Is Jesus enough?
    God bless you, Mike.

  6. Good questions and reasoning Diane. Yes, we need the right fellowship. I often wondered why God moved my wife and I from a church we served in from 1987 through 1999. We ended up in a city that has few good churches and the one we attended and served in from 2001 through half of 2006 was mediocre at best. There were some good people in it though. God ripped us out of there about the same time that He put me through a tremendous spiritual awakening, a personal revival that changed everything. The closer I drew to Him the more people He took out of my life. That was very puzzling to me at the time, however, as you stated, it was for my growth and protection. Since God established this ministry and put me to work in it I have had many seemingly close friends within it who for one reason or another were taken out of fellowship here. Some of them were quite painful separations. However, when we take a stand on the Hill of God’s Truth there will be so many who turn from us for we cannot compromise there. I pray every morning before I leave to go to work that God will give me wisdom, discernment, direction, and vision. He is good to us Diane. He gives us exactly what we need to serve Him for His glory and keeps us from pursing things and people that would lead us to harm. God bless you my sister.

  7. The trust and faith He desires from us is great.
Thank you. You have helped me.
About 3 years ago was when the Lord truly saved me. Although I thought I was a christian, I had very little evidence of it in my daily life. Thank you for sharing all you did because it does help to know we are not alone.
At that time of God’s saving grace to me, I had to pray for a desire to read God’s Word, as I had none, and He, of course, answered that prayer! I really do not have anyone one to teach me, other than my precious husband, who has had to put up with me all these years!!!! We have not felt led to find a different church as of yet. My point being that God, in the midst of the drought I have here, makes SURE I receive what I need. He leads me to books, sermons, but most importantly the Holy Spirit is making the Word clear to me. When I have a question, He leads me to someone or some source with the answer. Paul Washer has been a tremendous help to me in listening to his sermons. It was quite an “accident” that I even found him. God providing yet again. I guess what I am trying to say is that I am, I think, starting to understand in a very small way the trust He wants from me.

Have a wonderful day and thank you for being the servant of Jesus that you are.
    Diane

  8. You are very welcome Diane and I rejoice that God is working in your life as He is. Paul Washer is tremendous! You have a wonderful day in the Lord as well.

  9. Mike, I glean from your writings every day! I just wanted to comment on George Tiller. I was STUNNED to know this man attended church, and was an usher. He obviously had been going to church for awhile, not a newbie. I could not wrap my mind around a man who could do the barbaric abortions Mon-Fri…take pix of the babies, baptize them, etc, I was just floored. The church knew all about his work and supported him….I mean….the LEADERSHIP and the CHURCH itself were part of the problem by not confronting Tiller and showing him how this practice was unbiblical and not Christ honoring. But the church failed in it’s part and was not clinging to truth. No truth or power of God could have been present Sunday after Sunday, gathering after gathering for George Tiller to sit there and not feel a prick in his conscience of what he was doing was wrong. So an apostate church produced an abortionist with no fear of the Lord or leading of the Holy SPirit. HOW TRAGIC!!!!!!!

Now let’s spread out to our seeker sensitive mega churches, emergent etc. gatherings…….this is why the body of Christ in America is worldy, carnal, fleshly and behaving just like the lost of the world. We do not HEAR the WORD or let it PIERCE OUR HEARTS BY THE SPIRIT so we become DECIEVED to thinking how we live is just FINE because we CALL OURSELVES and CHRISTIAN and ATTEND A CHURCH……..

Lord, Lord Jesus I cry out to you for a mighty outporing of your Spirit on this nation…we are naked and wretched and poor and blind…yet we call ourselves “christians”….

  10. Amen T.J. – very well said my sister! The spiritual blindness in those whose hearts are not broken over their fleshly lifestyles and their self-honoring religiosity is very dark. Yes, please Lord pour out your spirit, we are spiritual vagabonds living is a parched, dry, and desperate land in an evil time. Have mercy on us Lord and pour out your grace on us.

  11. Very timely post for me, Mike. Saturday night, I was invited to participate in a time of worship at someone’s house. A bunch of musicians get together and have a night of prayer and worship. I haven’t seen these people in years, ever since the Lord showed me the truth concerning His doctrines of grace. I used to be part of the Pentecostal church, but not anymore. The problem is, I really like the hosts of this worship gathering and when I was invited to go, I was so torn.

My roommate and I went and we enjoyed seeing some of these people again, but there were songs that we wouldn’t sing because we didn’t agree with the words and there were prayers being said that we felt uncomfortable with simply because they reflected peoples’ opinions of who God is rather than what the Bible says about God.

With about dozen people there — and this being the only time we’ve seen these people in several years — my roommate and I decided not to say anything. We were polite and did enjoy the “fellowship” to some extent.

But Sunday morning, I was full of anger — an inexplicable burst of anger. I said things to my roommate I wished I hadn’t said. Good thing she’s patient! We talked through it and as we did, all these issues came up about the night before. I was so conflicted. On the one hand, I want so much to gather for worship with others. On the other hand, I know that I cannot have true fellowship with those who are not “of one mind.”

There are Christians who accuse me of “dividing the Body” because I don’t have fellowship with them due to big theological differences. So, on Sunday morning, I felt that if I hadn’t gone to the worship thing the night before, I would have felt guilty for not fellowshipping. But the torment in my mind from participating leads me to believe I cannot fellowship there again.

My roommate thinks that God opened a door for us to speak into these peoples’ lives since they were the ones who, out of the blue, invited us over. She thinks perhaps we can at least now have some time with the hosts to raise some questions and see where they’re coming from. I can see that. I think I can have a good conversation with them alone and keep that door open.

It is so difficult, but I know in these end times I can’t expect anything else. Every day, it’s a battle for me. So far, I have lost many friends due to my stance on the truth. When that opportunity comes up to gather with fellow musicians to worship God, my immediate thought is that I want to, but then I fight with myself over whether I ought to.

    Come, Lord Jesus, come.

  12. Carol,

I know of what you are talking about here. I have family who just don’t get it. They don’t understand why I am Reformed and look at it as weird, etc. However, when I am around them I am gentle and never make an issue of it. I may tell them the truth, but if resistance comes, I don’t pursue it very far. I pray they see the Christlikeness in me. With the issues with my parents I have had to deal with many of them directly and I know they are surprised when they witness a Spirit-filled Mike Ratliff being patient and gentle and always ready to give an account. Their Christianity is shallow at best. There is no depth there at all while ours have roots that run deep because we are coming into understanding of election. We know we have not deserved or earned anything. It is all of God. We are incapable of doing good outside of His grace. We know this and it frees us up. I pray they see this.

If you are around your friends again I pray that you refrain from “worshipping” according to false views of God, but do be Christlike in your humility around them. If you do this then you may very well be given the opportunity to give an account. God may use you in a very large way here to bring some into the light.

    In Christ

    Mike Ratliff

  13. Mike, you’re right. I understand the spirit of gentleness of which you speak. It is important to approach these friends with humility. It’s a fine line I must walk. I just don’t like being so close to the edge.

I will be meeting up with the hosts next month. We’ve never really talked. The only thing we have in common is the music. Whether they are saved or not, I don’t know. I know for sure that they love the Jesus they think is the Jesus in the Bible. They tend not to live like the world. But they do tend to favor the Word of Faith doctrine, although they probably have no idea that that’s what they believe. There’s no systematic theology there; it’s a pick and choose what sounds good from the Bible theology. Mix that with some deep emotion and they certainly seem like earnest Christians.

It’s easy to share the Gospel with the heathen and worldly. It more difficult (for me) to talk theology with those who believe with their whole hearts that they have the truth already. Your prayers are welcomed!
