37 For, “Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay; 38 but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” 39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls. (Hebrews 10:37-39 ESV)
Nearly every day I receive contact from a dear soul or a couple or a family who have ‘lost their church.’ They were part of a vibrant, obedient, Bible preaching church then something changed. The leadership changed for some reason and there was some sort of hostile takeover by those who are consumed by Rick Warren’s ungodly Purpose Driven deception. Gone are in-depth Bible studies. Gone are expository sermons. Gone is ministry to the Body of Christ. Instead, the whole “enterprise” is all wrapped up in ministering to the “unchurched.” It becomes church for the world. Some of the contact I have received is couched in deep, hot anger or raw hurt. These people feel betrayed. What happens in most cases is that in certain areas, these take-overs wipe out all good churches there and leave nowhere for these people to go to be fed or to minister.
We should view this as tragic. We should view this is as part of the cause of judgment being heaped up on these evil men who are culpable in this. However, as we saw in this post earlier today, we should also understand that God does allow the spirit of the Antichrist to attack His Church for His own purposes. The cost of following Jesus is high no matter what false teachers like Joel Osteen say. As true disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ, our role in the Kingdom is to obey Him, to be where He wants us to be, to be doing what He wants us to do.
57 As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, ”Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 59 To another he said, ”Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 60 And Jesus said to him, ”Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61 Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” 62 Jesus said to him, ”No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:57-62 ESV)
Here is one that is forward to follow Christ, but seems to have been hasty and rash, and not to have counted the cost. If we mean to follow Christ, we must lay aside the thoughts of great things in the world. Let us not try to join the profession of Christianity, with seeking after worldly advantages. Here is another that seems resolved to follow Christ, but he begs a short delay. To this man Christ first gave the call; he said to him, Follow me. Religion teaches us to be kind and good, to show piety at home, and to requite our parents; but we must not make these an excuse for neglecting our duty to God. Here is another that is willing to follow Christ, but he must have a little time to talk with his friends about it, and to set in order his household affairs, and give directions concerning them. He seemed to have worldly concerns more upon his heart than he ought to have, and he was willing to enter into a temptation leading him from his purpose of following Christ. No one can do any business in a proper manner, if he is attending to other things. Those who begin with the work of God, must resolve to go on, or they will make nothing of it. Looking back, leads to drawing back, and drawing back is to perdition. He only that endures to the end shall be saved. – Matthew Henry
So many seek to be a Christian on their own terms. We are witnessing the devastation of that with the carnage wrought by the Purpose Driven paradigm and Emergence Christianity. Both drive people away from God’s truth as the central core of our faith. Both are man-centered. Both are all about shaping God to please men. Both are false forms of Christianity that are in rebellion to the true cost of serving Christ.
As I said at the top of this post, I receive communication continually from people who are being ministered to through this blog and others because their churches, from where they should be fed spiritually, have been decimated by wolves. I would like to affirm to all reading this right now that I will continue to serve my Lord as He directs. I pray that He will draw those who are in spiritual need here to be fed and ministered to as He wills. Let us draw together in His truth and commit to one another by His grace to love and serve one another in love as long as He wills.
Soli Deo Gloria!
As painful as it was to have to leave my fellowship,
I know that it was the Lord’s Sovereign will. I am
beginning to wonder if it was not a protection from
what is to come!
I draw continual, perpetual strength from the Word of God and His precious Spirit.
Oh what a Savior, Oh Hallelujah!!
Extremely timely, brother. So many have been fooled by the purpose driven deception. Churches are being destroyed, but we knew this day would come. We must hold fast to our faith and be watchful!
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. – 2 Timothy 4
Thank you so much for this excellent post Mike. 14 years ago I left a church that I thought I would be a member of until I died. Things drastically changed and I knew I had to leave. It took me two years of looking to find a church that teaches the Bible. I have been a member of that church for almost 12 yrs now. We are small in number and until recently I haven’t understood why we haven’t grown numerically. I believe I know the answer. Only the Bible is taught … no hype, no ‘entertaining’ … just Scripture taught by a man who loves the Lord and His church. I leave in a few minutes to go to Bible Study. One of our Elders is teaching on The Doctrines of Grace and it’s like breathing fresh air to hear him communicate God’s Word to us this way.
Keep up the good work! You’re a blessing!
Louise
Thanks Mike!!! He who endures to the end shall be saved! ALL PRAISE TO THE LORD JESUS CHRIST!!!
Hi Mike,
Amen. God drew me to this site almost a year ago this coming June. You and others have helped me and my husband so much. I am grateful to God for teachers of His word. What a great need we have for it. Thank you and I pray God continues to bless you with an understanding of His word so as to continue to teach us.
Amen Berean Gal, God is good to those who are truely His!
Amen Justin!
Louise, you are indeed blessed to be in a church like that my sister! Thank you for your prayers and encouragement.
You are very welcome Stella!
You are very welcome in the Lord Diane! To God be the glory!!!
You are a blessing Mike. I always get encouragement when I visit here and I also get conviction at times too, thank you Mike.
Cristina
Mike, excellent post. I became a Christian when Warren’s book was all the rage, and I realized how devoid it was of the true Gospel very early. I remember quite distinctly talking to one friend who’s church was doing the 40 days, and she was quite angry at me that I was asking questions about the validity of the 40 days of purpose. When I asked her to open Scripture I was basically called a “Warren-hater”. How sad.
Now, I am a pastor of a baptist church that’s anything but “Purpose Driven”. Instead, we are Spirit led. I preach expositorily through books of the Bible, and the name of the church is Berean Baptist. We definitely adhere to the Acts 17:11 idea of testing all ideas. And it has been wonderful to see people grow in the Lord.
Many of the people that the Lord graciously allows me to minister to are elderly, and they’ve commented that it’s been DECADES since they have seen bible teaching and the reliance on the sufficiency of Scripture alone as we adhere to. It is truly a blessing.
Yet I am also deeply saddened by the number of people I know who’ve had their churches ravaged by the Seeker-Sensitive/Warrenesque approach to church.
Brother, continue preaching God’s solid word! It is the only way to go.
Blessings my friend.

Thank you Cristina and good to hear from you my sister!
Good to make your acquaintance Rob! I have added a link to your site in the Discernment category.
Thank you for being here Mike. May the Lord bless you richly.
You are very welcome Paul and Luann! Please continue to pray for me and this ministry that I will be doing exactly what brings God glory!
Mike,
I’m glad you’re here too. The Lord led me to your site a few years ago through Apprising Ministries, and He has worked through your posts to edify and bless. Laborers like you are much needed at such a time as this.
Per the current state of the visible church, my family travels 40 minutes to a biblical assembly. (Not too bad, considering other people’s stories I’ve heard.) So many churches, resting on a foundation of bad theology, teach decisional regeneration expressed with gimmicks like altar calls and sign-the-back-of-this-card-and-you’re-in style evangelism, while others emit cold legalism. It’s a tragic mess out there. But as you mentioned, God is truly good to His own and provides for us. His grace is sufficient.
Thanks,
Brian
Thank you for the encouragement Brian! Please continue to pray for me in this ministry. Yes, it is a sad mess out there, but that should show us who is truly in control of that “mess.”
Hi Mike
Bless you for your obedience to the Lord in your ministry here – it is always a joy to read what He leads you to write which is always so edifying.
I believe the Lord definitely uses things like PD and others to move His Church around, to bring her out of a comfortable complacency possibly or to make her face the reality of her life in Him and whether she is truly putting Him first in all. I do not believe that causing folks to leave churches that are becoming unbiblical is a bad thing in any way, regardless of how painful it might be. The leadership is often forced to expose their agendas when confronted by everyday normal Christians and most times they are deemed as undesirables. It is a thing to rejoice about because it is very often the catalyst needed to bring the truth of Who we are really dealing with is and what our real purpose is for being here in the first place out, which is to glorify Him.
I have seen the Lord use the most amazingly difficult circumstances to get His children to where He needs them to be, then another time it happens without the person really being aware of it and only when they are ‘there’ they realise it took place.
Too often we attempt to bring the Lord down to our level, which of course is not what it is about. He knows exactly what we need for us to see Him as our Holy, Almighty God. In all things God will always get the glory that is His alone whether we are His or not because He is God. It is inevitable, so we can truly rejoice when we are shifted about by Him and can trust Him that He is sifting and moulding and shaping His Church for His purposes and His ultimate glory.
What is so clear from reading all the other comments is that God is bringing more and more of His true children out of the mire of what constitutes the ‘modern church’ and is growing them in His ways and truths. It is so exciting to read the other comments as again, God gets glorified in each one. I can sense both relief and excitement in the comments. It is just wonderful!
Keep praying and writing dear brother
Praise Him.
Mike, do you think that all the concentration on “Purpose Driven” matters, “church for the unchurched”, etc. is a red-herring to lead people away from true, Biblical, effective witnessing to the lost?
Surely the Enemy of our souls would love to stop anyone else from coming to the Savior in repentence and faith…what better way than stopping the “preaching and Hearing” that’s necessary according to the Scripture?
Mike,
Thank you for not compromising. You are a blessing to many of us. I am really very sad about John Piper.
Thanks Steph, always good to hear from you my sister. I agree completely, I hear more and more of God drawing His children out of the mire. To God be the glory!
Yes I do Kathy!
You are very welcome Deb, and yes it is.
