Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. (Luke 9:28-32 ESV)
As we continue in our discussion and deeper look at the makeup of the dividing line between genuine Christianity, that which is God centered, and counterfeit Christianity, that which is man centered, let us look the vast difference in how each side understands the concepts of God’s glory and the praise that is His due. The word most often translated as praise in the New Testament is δόξα or doxa. It is also translated even more often as glory. However, in secular Greek, δόξα means opinion or conjecture, especially favorable human opinion, which then includes an evaluation placed by others, such as fame, repute, honor, or praise. Is this what is meant in God’s Word when δόξα is used in reference to God’s glory and the praise that His due? I submit that that definition exactly defines most professing Christians’ understanding of praise and worship, but is not in any way shape or form what is true δόξα.
While the secular usage of δόξα is as defined above, in the New Testament we see a totally different picture. Yes, we still honor the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and we guard our Lord’s reputation above all, the concept of personal opinion vanishes entirely. Of the 165 occurrences of δόξα in the New Testament, not one regresses into man’s personal opinion. Also, not one of the post-apostolic fathers use it that way either. In other words, the Biblical usage of δόξα has transformed it from the realm of the subjective, shifting, selfish opinion of man thereby showing us that man-centered Christianity is worthless. Man’s opinion about God and His honor and praise and glory matters not at all. Instead, true Christianity is God Centered in that all that matters is the eternal constant of God’s fame, repute, honor, and praise.
Carefully read the passage I placed at the top of this post which describes our Lord’s transfiguration. Forms of δόξα are used twice there. The first is used to describe the appearance of Moses and Elijah in v31, “οἳ ὀφθέντες ἐν δόξῃ ἔλεγον τὴν ἔξοδον αὐτοῦ ἣν ἤμελλε πληροῦν ἐν ᾿Ιερουσαλήμ.” A word for word translation of this would be, “who having been seen in glory were saying the way of of him, which he was about to to fill in Jerusalem.” Here we have the dative, singular form of δόξα in the two words ἐν δόξη referring to Moses and Elijah being seen “in splendor” or “in glory.” This was splendor or glory in which they were seen, but it was not personally theirs, but was acting upon them. The glory was coming from elsewhere. The dative case refers to nouns that are indirectly affected by the action. This is important for us to grasp here my brethren. Let’s look at v32 for the second usage.
ὁ δὲ Πέτρος καὶ οἱ σὺν αὐτῷ ἦσαν βεβαρημένοι ὕπνῳ· διαγρηγορήσαντες δὲ εἶδον τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς δύο ἄνδρας τοὺς συνεστῶτας αὐτῷ. (Luke 9:32 GNT)
Here is a word-for-word translation: “the but Peter and the with him were having been burdened in sleep; having awakened but they the glory of him and the two men the ones having stood together to him.” Here, the word translated as “glory” is the accusative, singular form of δόξα or δόξαν. The accusative is the opposite of the dative form in that the noun is the direct object of the verb. The glory here is our Lord’s. Peter and the Apostles awaken to that glory and see the transfigured Lord in His glory and see Moses and Elijah in that glory. Notice that the glory refers to radiance and brightness. The glory Peter, James and John witnessed here was divine and heavenly radiance , the loftiness and majesty of God, and even the being of God.
He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. (Hebrews 1:3-4 ESV)
Puritan Thomas Watson wrote: “When we praise God, we spread his fame and renown, we display the trophies of his excellency. In this manner the angles glorify him; they are the choristers of heaven, and do trumpet forth his praise. Praising God in one of the highest and purest acts of religion. In prayer we act like men; in praise we act like angels.”
Of course, those who praise this way are God Centered in their faith and their praise and worship and their approach to the Word of God, all things about Christianity. On the other hand, the man centered professing Christian thinks that all of this is just a big bore because it’s not about them.
Soli Deo Gloria!
Dear Mike, Through the lovely threads God laid out during one of my web searches, I discovered your writing . Today I was so blessed to read your Greek exogesis of the text…something I have missed since seminary. Taking the exegesis, not the ‘isogesis’ so many pastors use today, brings forth breathtaking truth and the power of The Holy Spirit into God’s word. Thank you so much. May you continually be blessed as the light of God’s truth flows from your pen. In His Strong grip of Grace…Robin
Thank you for the encouragement Robin!!!! Be blessed in the Lord!!
1 Chronicles 29:11-13 (English Standard Version)
11(A) Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all. 12(B) Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all.(C) In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. 13And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.
Thank you Mike, more so the Lord Jesus Christ, for He is in control of “all things”!
I really don’t like that word christian, for we are truly one of His disciples if we continue in His words. Please understand, in the day and age we live in, many call themselves christians. For I’m a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ, a dulos, yes slave, bought and paid for by a high price, which I don’t deserve! I didn’t bring myself to my knees and can’t do anything apart from the Lord. I’m not in control of anything and if I thought I was, well then I’m against God’s word. For even the squirrels know how to build nests in trees and they didn’t go to school. For only a man of God will know what I’m talking about or I’m wasting my good words and speaking into the wind.
Love In Christ,
David
Amen David, I completely agree brother!!!
Dear Mike,
This is a PRAISE to the Lord for gifting you with carefully teaching His precious Word!!!!!
Everyday there is a sense of excitement regarding what the “treasure” will be today on Possessing the Treasure:)
Your posts are like God’s manna feeding His sheep.
At the end of the day after all the duties are done it is so wonderful to sit at the feet of someone who loves the Lord and desires to make Him known through His precious word.
May God strengthen you for your unique ministry. A very grateful sheep…………………
Brilliant truth.
I like your comment David, well put. I have been on the opposite side, being on the wide emergent path. You are right about the words being lost on the wind. But also, those truths will stick like burrs in the skin of one on whom the holy spirit is working. They did as they came from my husbands mouth to me. He has always been blessed with good decearnment (usually to his misery, persecuted for it), and never been taken in by the emergent rubbish. But I was and have been in the position of feeling like I actually wanted to violently fly at him in rage just to shut him up!Particularly when talking about election and slaveship. But now with a violently thankful heart I praise God, because it was from not being able to escape those word of truth that the holy spirit revealed my decieved heart and God finally broke me : ) I thought I was already a christian and my husband was deceived!!Sometimes, when I see those around me still deceived I wonder why God allowed me to see the truth and not them. But that is his business and not mine. He still uses my husband to stab at my heart. We have not had a ‘church’ for 14 years now, but he has kept us and worked in us. I constantly think on this in wonder, but it really shows that HE is our sufficiency. You are so right, we are not in control ; wow am I thankful for that.
Praise God.
His will be done.
Fiona
Thank you Charisee, and yes, to God be the glory!
Thanks for sharing that Fiona!
Mike, thank you for these articles of late.
I appreciate the truth, I crave it.
I also can appreciate your love and grasp of the Greek, but for those of us who are not scholars, me for example, I rely very heavily on the Holy Spirit to lead and guide me into all truth. Comparing Scripture with Scripture, letting it interpret Itself. I do use a Strong’s Concordance to look up words in my KJV Key Word Study Bible (Zodiates) to further understand a meaning or context.
Thanks again for your continued obedience in writing and expounding.
Berean Gal, I see nothing wrong with how you are studying God’s Word. That is how I did it for many, many years as well as a Bible teacher and God blessed that. It seems that God has slowed me down right now and I am staying on topic much longer and digging deeper there, exploring and finding that God’s Word is indeed treasure beyond compare. I too crave it for in it we have not only God’s truth, we have the mind of Christ Himself and we come to know our Saviour even more intimately.
This was wonderful, Mike, thank you! I am going to have to study the words praise and glory on my own. I need more understanding of them. Any chance of a part 2?
Kind of off the subject…but I often hear people say over and over again…glory to God, or glory be to God… as well as… praise the Lord… after almost every sentence they speak and even after jokes. It becomes a useless saying after a while….like you become immune to what you are even saying and it becomes a habit.
Well, enough rambling…I liked your quote from Watson about praise being a high and pure act of religion. I definitely need more understanding on this.
Thanks for this article and you have a good day…hidden in Him.
Thank you.
My pastor was a Bible scholar, taught by the Holy Spirit, and he taught me (us) how to study the Word.
I have been involved, since his passing, with men who rely so heavily on their intellect that the Spirit is non-existent.
These men would lean heavily toward cessationists.
I shy away from anyone who would say that the Holy Spirit is not important or that He cannot teach, lead. guide.
The common layman has the same access to the Word and truth as the intellectual scholar.
That is all I am saying.
Thank you Diane, yes, I am remaining on this topic for awhile or at least related topics.
Yes, I agree, I have heard people say that sort of thing and it becomes “mantra like” and that is troublesome actually. The more I dig here, the more I see that we need to be more deliberate in how we reason and think through all we do as we live and walk through this life for God’s glory. That is what this “series,” if you can call it that, has been about, but the teacher must learn it before he teaches it.
I am most certainly a work in progress.

Berean Gal, there are two types of Bible scholars. There are those who are taught by men to rely on intellect and are centered on philosophy and then there are those that are taught by the Holy Spirit. Yes, the latter still must know how to use the tools and it helps to know something about textual criticism and such, but the reliance is on the Holy Spirit not primarily the intellect. I pray that I remain the latter type. I have never been to seminary. I was taught how to do word studies so I could teach serious Bible Study classes at church. I loved it. However, I found that it never worked if I relied on me and my intellect and the tools alone. It only worked if I prayed and reasoned through the Scripture as I was being led by the Holy Spirit. In between responding to these comments and answering emails that is what I am doing in preparing for tonight’s post. God has it already lined out for me. It is amazing. He gave me the roadmap this morning in my devotion time. I have been following it all morning and it is like following a treasure map. I know that when it comes time to put the pieces together in the post, God will do that for its all about Him and His glory. He has given me the hunger for HIs truth and drive to find it in His Word. I am amazed at the ease with which I have been able to pick up the Greek. That can only be explained as God working in me for I am not capable of that myself. Our part of this is to use our intellect, to think, to reason, but it is God who guides us and gives us the answers, His truth as He develops the Mind of Christ in us. I pray that all of God’s children would have this hunger for the truth and have the means to get to it.

I agree.
The God-given ability (intellect) and Word revealed by the Holy Spirit are two pillars that work in concert with one another. I do not understand those who say that the Holy Spirit no longer manifests Himself to us through His written Word (logos) and through the spoken Word (rhema).
What you described about your devotion time is what I have heard my pastor describe, he would say it was as if the hand of God was guiding his pen as he wrote out his outline and notes. (he did all longhand, didn’t like computers much)
Looking forward to more meat from the precious Word of God.
Thanks for your comments, encouragement and prayers Berean Gal!
Dear Berean Gal,
I have greatly benefited from reading your comments. Thank you for sharing your love of the Lord!
Some of the pastors I respect ie: John MacArthur and R.C. Sproul would fall into the category of “classic cessationists”. The problem is with Continuationism it “may” carry you over into experiential and subjective spirituality.
Case in point would be the book “God Calling” edited by A.J. Russell. The two “listeners” thought they were penning the very words of Jesus himself. Well, the problem is she is describing divine revelation which would therefore have equal weight as Scripture, and in this case what they wrote does not even line up w/ Scripture so obviously it was not God that was calling at all. My friend and I wrote a review on lighthouse trails regarding this book: http://www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com/blog/?p=3764
Classic cessationist do not put the Holy Spirit in a box and say that God is limited. They are just very careful about what is experienced and subjective so as not to get led astray. Hope this is helpful, my husband and I have been looking into this alot lately. Very interesting:)
Kept only by His grace, Charisse
Charisse,
Thank you for your admonishment.
I also enjoy some of John MacArthur’s teaching, and Sproul as well. I must disagree with you, I feel that they DO put the Holy Spirit in a box and limit God. From all that I have read and gleaned from their beliefs this is my conclusion. When you say that God, the Holy Spirit (1/3 of the Trinity), no longer speaks to man, then you have limited Him in His power. There are other issues too, healing, revelation, any manifestation (mostly tongues is their issue) is deemed fleshly and emotionalism. I believe these men are extreme on one end.
I also agree that there is an extreme faction on the other end, that base everything on experience and some esoteric feeling, not basing or matching it to the WORD. I do not adhere to this either.
But, if there was ONE time that someone was divinely healed, or ONE time someone heard the voice of the Lord Jesus Christ in their ear, or ONE time someone gave a prophetic utterance, etc., etc., you get the idea, then we cannot say that these things have ceased.
I believe that somewhere in the middle is the TRUTH.
As far as the “God Calling” book you mentioned. I studied the origins of that (thru my pastor) back in the mid-80′s. It is nothing more than a book channeled to two women. I denounce it fully.
All things must go through the filter of the Word of God and if they do not line up with or are diametrically opposed to it then I get as far away from it as possible!
Thanks again.
Dear Berean Gal,
I sincerely apologize for having caused an offense and I am truly sorry. Please forgive me overstepping my bounds!
In the everlasting, lovingkindness of Christ, charisse
I take no offense at all.
Quite the contrary.
I just wanted to clarify my first statement.
I appreciate your candor.
