Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ (Matthew 21:37 ESV)
In the Old Testament the Hebrew word translated “reverence” is usually שׁחה or shâchâh. It is the same word used for worship as well because it speaks of assuming a humble posture before royalty for instance. However, in the New Testament we find a most remarkable word translated as respect or reverence or even shame. It is found in the passage above (Matthew 21:37). Here is the Greek, “ὕστερον δὲ ἀπέστειλε πρὸς αὐτοὺς τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ λέγων· ἐντραπήσονται τὸν υἱόν μου.” Here we have ἐντραπήσονται the plural, future tense, indicative mood, passive voice form of ἐντρέπω or entrepō, which literally means “to turn into oneself, to put self to shame, to feel respect or deference toward someone else.” If you are at all familiar with the parables of our Lord then I am sure you recoginze from where I drew the passage above. You may be asking yourself, what has this got to do with worship? Let’s see…
In the Parable of the Wicked Vinedressers from Matthew 21:33-40, Mark 12:1-9, and Luke 20:9-16, a vineyard owner hired men to tend his vineyard, but they were wicked. When the owner sent servants to collect the harvest, the tenants beat them and stoned them, even killing some. He finally sent his son, thinking the tenants would “reverence” or “respect” him, but instead they killed him. When Jesus told this parable, the Jewish religious leaders knew that He spoke it against them and it only angered them even more against Him. The parable is, of course, about the Lord Jesus and the many servants of God who came before Him.
The men seeking to kill our Lord did not ἐντρέπω Him, but, instead, sought to hang onto and maintain their own religious structures and ways. We have the very same thing going on today, even in many churches, especially those which are man-centered in their approach to everything they do. If we examine our own devotion to our Lord in how we walk through each day, do we really ἐντρέπω Him as we should? Instead of putting ourselves to shame and completely bearing ourselves to God, entertainment is demanded. If the “worship style” is not exciting or upbeat enough then we get bored and look for another church. We want what we want and, in this, we are doing the opposite of ἐντρέπω. Instead, we are focusing all the attention on self. Think of what is going on in some of these churches. How in the world can we ἐντρέπω our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ as we should with all of the distractions going on on-stage like Christian comedians, or stage plays, or rock music or even a moto-cross motorcyclist jumping over the Pastor on stage? Instead of participating in these things, we should be grieved in our Spirit.
When the church-growth gurus attempt to sell their goods and prop up their worldly empires with their pragmatic approach to everything, let us never forget that all they have really done is appeal to people’s fleshly desires to be part of something big and exciting. People want a show and these fella’s know how to get those big crowds. They build big churches to appear successful. It’s like a machine though. It has to be fed continually or it will fall apart or quit running so they have to keep providing their people with whatever they want. Please show me where in Sacred Scripture this sort of church building is called for or commanded. Please show me where we are told its okay to call entertainment “worship” while we do not ἐντρέπω the Lord Jesus at all. Putting Jesus’ name every now and then in a sermon or trying to bless everything you do by saying “In Jesus Name!” is not the same thing. If we really ἐντρέπω Him we will also obey Him as His δοῦλος. That means that we live our lives in a God Centered way with our worship of Him at the very center of that and we will ἐντρέπω Him not only because that is His due, but because we love Him and serve Him with our all from grateful hearts full of the knowledge of His propitiation on our behalf at the Cross.
Soli Deo Gloria!
So true! I f entertainment or coffee lures people to church, then entertainment and coffee (plus scones) will be needed, in ever increasing abundance, to keep them there! I’ve been asking myself for days now, maybe longer, what the true purpose of the church is, and I don’t think it is meant to attract the worldly or un-churched. If they happen to go to church, by the grace of God, then they should become uncomfortable to the point of salvation, and not comfortably entertained! Blessings to you, Brother!
Thank you Petra, yes, that is exactly how I see too my sister!
Amen Mike!
My comment is a bit long, I do apologize…but thought it was good. God bless!
“None of the gospels suggest that at any time during His ministry, He turned aside from preaching- to entertain, and so attract the people. He was in solemn earnestness, and His ministry was as earnest as Himself. Had He been less uncompromising, and introduced more of the bright and pleasant element into His ministry, He would have been more popular.
Yet, when many of His disciples turned away, because of the searching nature of His preaching, I do not find there was any attempt to increase a diminished congregation, by resorting to something more pleasant to the flesh. I do not hear Him saying, “We must keep up the gatherings at any cost! So run after those people, Peter, and tell them we will have a different style of service tomorrow! Something very short and attractive, with little, if any, preaching. Tell them they will be sure to enjoy it, and have a pleasant time. Be quick, Peter! We must get the people somehow; if not by gospel, then by entertainment!” No, this was not how He argued. Gazing in sorrow on those who would not hear the Word, He simply turns to the twelve, and asks, “Will you go away also?”
The Church’s Task–Entertainment or Evangelization?

Dear Mike,
I recently bought a CD “The Best Hymns Album in the World…Ever” and I they may not be exaggerating!
This hymn underscores your post of reverence and who is on the side of Christ and not the world.
“Who is on the Lord’s Side” by Frances Havergal (1836-1879)
Who is on the Lord’s side, Who will serve the King?
Who will be His Helper, Other lives to bring?
Who will leave the world’s side, Who for Him will go?
By They call of mercy, By they grace divine, We are on the Lord’s side, Saviour we are Thine.
Fierce may be the conflict, Strong may be the foe,
But the King’s own army, None can overthrow.
Round His standard ranging, Victory is secure,
For His truth unchanging, makes the triumph sure.
Joyfully enlisting, By Thy grace divine, We are on the Lord’s side, Savior we are Thine.
Chosen to be soldiers, In an alien land,
Chosen called and faithful, For our Captains’s band.
In the service royal, Let us not grow cold,
Let us be right royal, Noble true and bold.
Master Thou wilt keep us, By Thy grace divine, Always on the Lord’s side, Saviour always Thine.
May we reflect the glory of being on the Lord’s side!
Kept only by His wonderous grace, Charisse
Amen Mike.
Couldn’t have said it better – just wish more of our friends could “see” this!
The words to that hymn expresses much….the true Church is ready to follow our Lord out of the false church….anytime He calls us….It’s a battle! He has already won it!
“Worship the Lord in the beauty of His Holiness.” Wonderful, beautiful awe of our precious Savior.
Thanks for sharing that Diane!!!! Amen!
What a great Hymn Charisse!!! Amen, thank you for sharing that!!!!
Thank you Fiona!
Same here Sandra!
Amen Heather!
I would like for anyone to show me the gift from the Holy Spirit of ‘worship minister’ in the New Testament.
This is the problem… we have been taught that ‘worship’ takes place at a certain time and place…look at every so-called church’s billboard… it will tell you ‘what time ‘worship’ starts and sometimes what ‘style’ of ‘worship’ it will be! This is what is driving the current so-called ‘christian’ ‘services’.
I took my children from ‘traditional’ so-called ‘churches’ because they are not New Testament ‘tradional’. Big difference. My children and I were being taught that when a certain song or colored lights were dimmed or turned on or big screen projectors or tv’s were turned on…( drum roll here ) now it’s ‘worship time.’ Then the ‘worship leader’ ( not biblical in the New Testament anywhere… no ‘gift of music’ is mentioned in the entire New Testament… yet how many ‘churches’ have been divided over the non New Testament position of ‘ Music Pastor’ or ‘Worship Leader’ notice all those capitalized ‘positions’ that are used but not one of them found in the entire New Testament?
According to the ‘Traditional American so-called Church’ the ‘services’ of the New Testament sure must have been lacking… but all they were lacking is what? How about this one for starters: False ‘traditions’ that were invented and then called ‘traditional’ by men other than the authors or the New Testament. That is what they ‘lacked’.
What a sad and silly way to supposedly ‘glorify’ our Lord…
Show up… sing and dance and then at 12:00 noon it shuts off and you can pretty much ‘live’ unto yourself as long as you check in for an ‘electrified’ ‘service’… if you don’t check in on Sunday is just about the only time the so-called church is concerned for your so-called ‘spiritual’ state because this is the only time they are or believe they are ‘spiritual’.
“Much that passes for New Testament Christianity is little more that objective truth sweetened with song and made palatable by religious entertainment.”

“The Lordship of Jesus Christ is not quite forgotten among Christians, but it has been relegated to the hymnal where all responsibility toward it may be comfortably discharged in a glow of religious emotion. Or if it is taught as a theory in the classroom it is rarely applied to practical living. The idea that the Man Christ Jesus has absolute final authority over the whole church and over its members in every detail of their lives is simply not now accepted as true by the rank and file of evangelical Christians.”
“In the conduct of our public worship where is the authority of Christ to be found? The truth is that today the Lord rarely controls a service, and the influence He exerts is very small. We sing of Him and preach about Him, but He must not interfere; we worship our way, and it must be right because we have always done it that way, as have the other churches in our group.”

Thanks for sharing all that Brent!
You find God warning the nations of their failure to do worship the Lord accordingly in Psalm 2:10-12.
Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; take warning, O judges of the earth. Worship the Lord with reverence and rejoice with trembling. Do homage to the Son that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, for His wrath may soon be kindled.
How much more then is the church to do homage to the Son, venerate the Son, kiss the Son!
Amen Sharon!
