Christ the Wisdom and Power of God

by Mike Ratliff

(1 Corinthians 1:18,19 NA27)

For the word of the cross to those perishing is senseless, but to us being saved, it is the power of God for it has been written, ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise ones and the understanding of the intelligent I will set aside.’ (a personal translation of 1 Corinthians 1:18, 19 from the NA27 Greek text)

Look around at those man-focused, pragmatic, seeker-sensitive “churches” all around us in our time. They may vary in many ways, but there is a commonality that marks them all as products of the spirit of Laodicea (Revelation 3:14-22) rather than the spirit of Philadelphia (Revelation 3:7-13). That commonality is seen in the passage I placed at the top of this post. It is what makes them of the spirit of Laodicea. They are structured and operate according to the wisdom of men. Their very way of handling the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ depletes the cross of its power. What do I mean? When the “so-called gospel” that is “preached” is given in a way that intentionally removes its offense and an attempt is made to make it sensible to the lost and dying world by removing the blood and removing the necessity of our Lord’s death for those who owed a debt to God they could not pay, well, what is given is more of a sales pitch and self-help remedy. All this does is create a body of people who are neither cold nor hot. No, they believe they have everything and are right with God, but are in reality, wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked who are simply ready for the next deceiver to come along.

The preaching of the gospel is never done correctly according to the wisdom of men. No, God created one way to salvation through the Son and that one way makes no sense to the unregenerate, that is, those who are of this world. Carefully read the passage I placed at the top of this post. Don’t you believe God meant it when He said this? What Paul said in v18 totally defeats all attempts to modify or edit the gospel message by those who desire to conform it to man-made parameters like Political Correctness, or Pop-Culture, or Post-Modernist thinking, et cetera. The reason the proponents of those things desire to edit the gospel is they see that the word of the cross is foolish or senseless. What does that say about them my brethren? Doesn’t that mark them as among those who are perishing?

(1 Corinthians 1:20-25 NA27)

Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Did not God make foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, by the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through its wisdom, God was pleased through the foolishness of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews an offense, to Gentiles foolishness, but to those who are called, both to Jews and to Greeks, Christ, God’s power and God’s wisdom. Because the foolishness of God is wiser then men and the weakness of God is stronger than men. (a personal translation of 1 Corinthians 1:20-25 from the NA27 Greek text)

This is very clear my brethren. As I said above, those who are not called by God, see the cross as foolishness or an offense. It makes no sense to them. When we deal with atheists, pagans, Jews, or Muslims in our apologetics, this is their complaint. Notice, however, that Paul makes it very clear, “but to those who are called, both to Jews and to Greeks” Christ is God’s power and God’s wisdom. The reference to “Greeks” is referring to all Gentiles. Therefore, where does the responsibility lay to draw people to believe? Is it with programs and preaching and big churches and fellowship? No! It is God who calls (John 6:44) and it is God who gives the gift of faith (Ephesians 2:1-10).

(1 Corinthians 1:26-31 NA27)

For you see, your calling brothers, that not many wise men according to the flesh, not many powerful men, not many well-born, but the foolish ones of the world God chose that he might shame the wise men. And the weak ones of the world God chose that he might shame the strong ones. And the low-born of the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no flesh may boast before God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became wisdom to us from God, both righteousness and sanctification and redemption that according as it has been written, “The one boasting, let him boast in the Lord.” (a personal translation of 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 from the NA27 Greek text)

Who chose whom? By what criteria did He make His choice of His elect? Do you see that those of us in Christ have no place to boast except in the Lord? We should not marvel that so few seem to be among the elect, but that anyone is at all. Are any of us deserving?

Now, compare what we just studied in 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 with what is going on in most of the visible church in our time. You will find a great variance. Gone is the foolishness and offense of the cross replaced with Christless Christianity that is the religion of the “churches” of the spirit of Laodicea. Flee to the cross my brethren!

Soli Deo Gloria!

  1. Here is another one from a local church…Take a Spiritual Gifts Assesment Test…This is an adaptation of the old DISC assessment. DISC Stood for Dominance, Influence, Submission, and Control, created by William Molton Martson a contemporary of Gustave Karl Jung an occult psychologist.
With tool like this, I don’t know why we need a bible or the Holy Spirit! All we need is a test, after a decision card is signed and a tithe number is issued upon completion of the test and membership class. Then we can plug in the useful ones. Trouble is, I tested out as…um…more an Alpha Male leader type then the pastor! LOL He didn’t like my attitude, results, and question…Why isn’t Jesus enough? He said it was an unfair question,…Honest!
    http://ecfchurch.org/gnc.html
    http://www.churchvolunteercentral.com/assessment/?wmaid=14&RefID=412452&RetMail=pastorsam@ecfchurch.org

These are but 2 examples I’ve personally… um… discussed, with the clergy here. Not EVERYBODY finds me funny!

  2. arggg, no thank you. You know, I think that’s why the pastors at these last several churches we have visited or, at least, the deacons or elders, have had a problem with me. I do come across as tha Alpha Male leader type. I just can’t help it. God made me this way. When the Word is opened, it just kicks in and out it comes. I know, I know, I should have been a preacher. I am most at home in front of class with everyone ready to dig into their Bibles. I don’t care much for just a bunch of listeners. I want people digging with me………..

  3. HaHaHaHa
They changed the name to Dominance, Influence, Steadyness, and Compliance!
Here is a link to a personality test that, if you do it in a church is (read with a solumn voice) Spiritual Gifts Assessment test.
    http://preethianusha.hubpages.com/hub/Free-five-minutes-personality-test
If you search Dominance Influence Submission and Control you can read just how evil it is, and you know what? 90% of the churches out there use a form of this test when picking folks to be elders and leaders, even if it is just an assessment done by the clergy, without you actually taking the test yourself! Your bosses use it at work too folks…hidden knowlege is the meaning of occult! Now you can understand the meaning from Revelation where it talks of being the habitation of unclean spirits, because I just gave you the proof! It is designed to tell those “over you” how to control you!!!

  4. Seminaries teach young men these pragmatic, man-pleasing ways. “Don’t preach more than 22 minutes because that’s how much actual programing your people are used to consuming in a typical half hour TV show.” Voddie Baucham tells us that’s how he was taught in his preaching class at seminary. Hence we train and test men within our church and do not require seminary – being reformed and regulative and the Bible saying nothing about seminaries.

But man-pleasers are another matter. As a self appointed “Senior Pastor” at my previous church told me, when I was confronting the staff with the error of our purpose-driven ways, “No, we should not be purpose-driven – we should be people-driven!” gag

Christ exalting, resting on the sufficiency of Scripture. Putting sinful man in his place, lest his flesh boast. Goats don’t like such church meetings, but the Lord’s sheep certainly do.

  5. When I was a young believer in the military out west, a few older saints made clear for me the difference between the kingdom of this world and the kingdom of Christ. I memorized verses like Romans 12:1, 2 about being separate from the world and regularly attempted to live those out. It wasn’t a secondary issue but a fact of life for a Christian as Colossians 1:13, 14 makes evident. Upon returning home to Michigan, I found most churches lacking this emphasis. How could this be? and the years went along without much clarity as to why so little emphasis was placed upon what God Himself had done and the results thereof.
Today when others ask me about the legitimacy of an individual or so-called ministry, I usually answer with this: look for the cross. Not just the cross for justification alone, but the cross for emancipation- that allows and opens the way for freedom from sin in one’s individual life. The former message has been heard round the globe no doubt, and followed by a host of so-called solutions that skirt that very cross and that make people (not slaves of righteousness but useful servants of religious institutions).
No amount of church activity, fanciful agendas or vain imaginations will free the masses from the tyranny of sin, Satan and self. Only One has paved the way and succeeded in overcoming all, and that by means of a personal cross. Where that cross is absent from one’s life and or ministry, rest assured that man’s thinking, theology and wisdom will attempt to take its place in a multitude of forms and fashions.
I love these verses Mike and appreciate the reminder. If any hope is to be found for those far immersed in the world’s thinking and solutions, it will be from those on the outside not merely speaking against what is false, but embracing what we each have been shown by God to be true and being willing to die for those same souls. Not the typical passion of your average “Christian” no doubt, but of necessity, the manner by which our resurrection, and as a result, theirs might take place.

  6. It’s God’s Word Michael. The problems we are discussing, as you pointed out so well, is our neglect of what it says and instead, most only acknowledge it as they do what is most pragmatic or man-pleasing. However, I am grateful that God has His own scattered all over this world as His remnant. What we must do is feed them and continue to shine the light of truth into the darkness so that all those God calls will come out of the confusion into His truth. I have no idea the details of what is coming, but I do that we must continue to do this.

  7. A couple of years ago before I left my church, my pastor’s wife (very WOF/Charismatic etc) took an 8 week Bible study on the Spiritual gifts with all of us taking the assessment first. I hated every minute of it yet at that time I couldn’t tell you why (I had only given my life to Christ about 4/5 years before). I couldn’t see the point when most there were not showing the Fruit of the Holy Spirit…….funny enough those with the gift of hospitality never exercised their gift in my company rather the opposite……and as for ‘love’ which they were obsessed with, few of them actually walked in true agape love and once again their ‘love’ was very selective within the very small (14-24 only, this is ex-pat Spain) congregation. I was being spiritually put to death there rather than nurtured and it was a former pastor who commented on it, I left a couple of months later when the pastor in response to my 5 page letter of concerns that I had told me he had loose theology and a couple of weeks later had a personal ‘go’ at me when my concerns were strictly biblical and not personal (or I would have left as soon as I joined the church!)….most had problems with God’s election and as for repenting of sin well ‘all’ were well with God yet living ungodly lives……I know it was the right thing to do to walk away, I could hear God calling me out of Babylon and off the broad road.

  8. Manfred said:
“Hence we train and test men within our church and do not require seminary … the Bible saying nothing about seminaries.”

    Amen!

Do you think that’s where (at least) half our problems have come from today in the church? From what I’ve heard, at some of these Bible colleges and seminaries, the men spend more time reading man’s books and learning man’s philosophies, than reading God’s word and being Spirit-taught.

  9. carolynb,

I think there are many good books written by men that help us understand the Word of God, though without the Spirit of God all is in vain. The main problem as I see it is that churches abandon their responsibility for identifying, training, and testing a man – seeing how he leads his family, etc. – and rely on an unbiblical institution (similar to the way families handle their children). This is a step away from a reliance on the Word and Spirit of God, trusting man and his “wisdom”. That is, as they say, as slippery slope. On that downgrade, all sorts of wretched books and ideas will be endorsed because someone thinks they work. By this, they mean that the given method can modify the behavior of goats. And with this, most people are satisfied. Sheep tending is far more difficult work than goat herding.

  10. What I left unsaid, but what must be highlighted here is that these methods, can be used on anyone, including the most godless self rightious, and they would show “spiritual gifts!” This again shows how Christ-less this churchianity is!
This technique can be adapted to any worldly gathering, and is by the senior management, to select and control their underlings! This is all part of the Peter Drucker school of business, spilling over into religious corporations. Once you are familiar with the technique, you can evaluate anyone simply by answering the questions about the person you are trying to control. This is pure occult hidden knowlege that button holes folks you want to keep, and helps you figure out the ones that will question you, and you want to send out. Rick Warren is on record for example saying the pillars of the church are the ones that “hold things up” and thus the preacher is taught to get rid of the Manfreds, Mike Ratliffs, and Mickey Merries.
I share this with you because so many of you have been removed on purpose by Purpose Driven and Willow Creek pastors.
They have literally bought a system of doing church from these organizations…including sermons…these are not shepherds but useless idiots trained to be change agents for the liberal one world beast religious system. True saints never have numbered enough to support a large church business, in any society, particularly over the past 100 years, that is why they broaden the road…for mammon. The true shepherds have always been abused for not adopting the ways of the world, which means satanic compromise. They are always marginalized and made the fool for their lack of success, as they quietly went about the Lord’s Work. Remember…”They lived in cave etc and the world was not worthy of them.”
Goats pick on sheep! Sheep follow the shepherd…goats have to be purpose driven! You are pilgrims with no home here…never forget that. Rejoice in the true Christian fellowship, as He orchestrates it, while building His church. But NEVER forget JESUS IS ENOUGH!
By the way, I can prove everything I say, with concrete examples just as I have above and before. It matters not how you feel about what i say. See for yourselves…they change their links often so you can’t keep them pinned down, this was a place where you could find their church affiliates, it doesn’t take much browsing to find it again though!

A screen shot of what one permutation of the church finder looked like…it changes links etc often…with each campaign I guess, then when they get more abuse then memberships they shut it down again till they recreate it anew with the next campaign.
Sorry, Mike for the many posts, but we got to answer the many silent ‘Is it just me?” questions out there so they don’t have to take the time we had to in order to get to the Truth! No, it is NOT you folks, it IS a conspiracy AGAINST the Lord and His elect!

  12. MM- are you talking about the Purposeful Deception church finder? The search engine that helps one locate PD churches?

  13. Mike thank you so much for not only pointing out the error, but also writing comfortingly and encouraging us to look to Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith. We could really get dragged down by all the error and apostasy. We desperately need to be encouraged (along with the warnings) to look to Christ. He is coming again. He is coming to claim His church. He is faithful and kind and He did not leave us as orphans but sent the Holy spirit here to lead, teach and guide us. We can encourage one another to be in the word daily. John chapters 13-17 are a real encouragement and if you haven’t read them recently, please do so soon. Encourage one another to pray. Encourage one another especially that Jesus Christ is coming again and He will make all things new. He will vindicate us and His truth that we proclaimed. In the meantime we just keep on being faithful to what He has called us to.

  14. I am so thankful for your faith and boldness to proclaim truth in this age of deception. It’s very encouraging and has been a great blessing.
I also wanted to share a video I made in hopes of furthering the Gospel.

  15. @mickey. that football line was so right on, thanks.
@Adrian God bless you for the video. I must say I usually do not look kindly on videos on Christian Blogs, but Sir (my apologies if your not a sir) that one was inspiring and convicting at the same time. Thanks.
@ Mike thanks again Sir for your fine work.

  16. Amen Mike! I agree also with the 22 minute message. I have heard pastors stop in the middle of a good message because they have gone past their normal time and say we will continue this next week??? Why not finish it now, why not give God a few more minutes? We are so frustrated because it so hard to find a church that preaches mesages that will set you on fire for the week, instead they are messages that are so watered down you are more discouraged then excited.

  17. Mickie Merrie -

You mentioned the PD church finder above. You are right, your whole assessment of everything PD is right. You’re also right about those so-called “spiritual gift assessment tests” which are not Biblical but based on psychology and/or occult. Altogether, yes, it is a conspiracy against true believers. Absolutely.

Two good things: first, the Lord and His sheep prevail, amen! Second, try to look at the PD finder as a helpful tool to know what churches NOT to attend. My husband and I have personally used the tool to find out what churches in our area have done PD and then we AVOID those churches. :) Though the scary thing is how MANY churches in our area have gone that route. Our area map looked like it had the chicken pox.

Mike, I’ve got a question for you: do you think that persecution of true believers in this country will come from “professing Christians”?

  18. Mike,

My husband and I have already experienced “soft persecution” – ridicule, marginalization, and mollification – from older believers, including pastors of churches we left, who are Warren fans.

I’m thinking: the “professing believers” who will be persecuting true believers will be from church growth/PD empire, or from other groups like the NAR (those are some aggressive folks, and they are merging with many other groups…).

What do you think? Any other groups we need to be aware of?

  19. Caroloyn, I am “investigating,” as are many of my friends, the ACTS29 groups and any “group” whose main theology is rooted in Dominionism. Watch out for any Reformed groups that talk about the Federal Vision stuff too.

  20. YES! I’m just learning about the dominionism stuff, and it is BAD news. And I’m no fan of Acts29, either.

But what on earth is Federal Vision??? Denise at surphside mentioned it, but I don’t have a clue what she was talking about.

  21. And another thank you 10,000 times over for your post on the doctrine of unity and separation. Brother, you have no idea how badly I needed to read it. May I print it up on paper to keep?

  22. Carolyn,
To answer your question, simply google blues verses greys, or watch the videos below. Further here is scriptural proof
    Matthew 24:9
Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.
    John 16:2
They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

I have already had discussions with folks who are heavy in to this other gospel, and they believe that it is the Fundimentalist, IE anyone who holds to old truth, who will start the war against them! We are their problem, they see a greater man and a lesser god, who needs us to fix what Adam broke in order for Jesus to return. When you combine these streams of the fallen away, you have eastern mysticism, and reincarnation coming in to. So , if I am hindering, and am killed, then they are doing me a favor, as well as their god, as I will no longer hinder them, yet the killing is just, because when I come back, I will understand and be thankful for their act of kindness. When you look at the Lucifer Trust, Now called Lucious Trust, folks like Helen Balvastsky promoted this great new age of Aquarius, which the Fundimentalists are holding us up from, so, like a cancer, we must be cut out to save the planet, again we will understand when we are reincarnated. If our escatology is a pre-trib rapture, where we get wisked out BEFORE it gets bad, these things can be quite scary as they happen and Jesus has not yet come. Just read/watch Cory Tenboom. Further, what did Paul say would happen at the final trump, so that we would not be mislead? What is the patience of the saints? We must let go of the false teachings we have already taken in, and have the Holy Spirit reveal Jesus and His clear Word to us to see the Truth.
…And be of good cheer, He has OVERCOME the world! Don’t fear the one who can take your life, rather fear the One who can take your life and cast you in to hell. Get the right relationship right, lose our (best) life (now), and gain eternal fellowship with Him. Remember we ARE promised a cross and tribulation! Tribulation is the wrath of Satan, not God’s final judgement. He does however judge (not the Final Judgement on the last day) nations and peoples here, and all these things are used to purify the Bride’s faith so we are not with spot or wrinkle. Satan and his minions have put us to sleep with the cares of this world being met, now everything is beginning to be shaken…Rejoice! For our redemption draws near, but NOT without tribulation, and some so severe that if He didn’t shorten the time…
    Watch this piece:
    http://www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com/blog/?p=7114
We are loved, and kept by Him for all eternity, but not this flesh tent, it is corrupt and must be replaced. Watchman simply tell you what they see coming, they warn, and wake up the sleeping so that they are prepared. The watchman doesn’t write the script, he simply awakens those sleeping to the danger at hand. The foolish sleepers are irritated at having their sweet dreams interrupted, they prefer slumber and sweet dreams/visions to the Truth. When they don’t get their way, they always weap and gnash teeth…right till the end…

  23. Also, when you watch the second video, please think of the prophets of Baal at Mt. Carmel. They too genuinly believed that their god would answer, and justify them against the true prophet. It was MORE then a ritual to them, they were totally emotionally into the contest. They were immersed in their deception!!!

  24. Mickey-

Thanks for the link from lighthousetrails. The connect the dots is getting more perturbing by the day. But truly, I cannot watch the video of the “Call”. The description was disturbing enough. I follow you on that prophets of Baal comparison. Thanks for the warning and the encouragement.

    Mike -

    Thanks!

  25. He forwarned us of all of it Carolyn. Our problems stem from the sitting at the feet of elders who teach us their traditions which have been such as to make the Word of no effect. (Also a fulfillment of scripture). Folks can’t see what the bible says for what their religious teachers say, so they quit trying because they think the annointed ones are needed to explain it to them. What gets Mike into trouble, and the rest of us too, is that we say/said “That’s not what the bible says!” We are then put back in our places by the high and mighty blind guides that have a degree from a state sponsored and state subsidized school…the same degree we all get really. We will be put out and lose fellowship if we don’t bow and say we are sorry. Well that makes us sheep of another shepherd who is no shepherd but a hirling/echo of hireling/echos…blind guides. Why have we come out (of the system not necessarily the building)? Because we know our Shepherd’s Voice and in no way will follow another! We MUST return to our First Love/Shepherd or be guilty of putting our hand to the plow…and looking back.
Acts 4:13 “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that THEY HAD BEEN with Jesus.”
Astonished and yet intimidated/fearful of the competition…There is nothing new under the sun…that is except those who are under the SON!!!
Man, I hope you folks are getting this, and loading up your guns to fight back and rescue those who are in danger of hellfire, pulling them out while there is still time! The ONLY THING that matters to me is Him and His will here on earth as it is in heaven and yet I too am convicted even as i type. There is no reason or reward for this work we are called to on this side, only persecution and tribulation, but all for Him we live. He IS ENOUGH!

  26. Mickey,
In all things, both my husband and I desire to be bereans, we take what man says (no matter who that man is) and put it through the scriptures. The Lord’s word is the final say, and when we understand things from Scripture, we are satisfied. If we don’t understand something, we keep praying and digging until we do. God has faithfully shown us the truth about many false teachers and teachings. Jesus Christ is faithful, trustworthy and true.
    1 John 2:27

  27. Beautiful Carolyn, thank you! I know that it was started with your name at the top, but I gues somewhere along the way, I made it for everyone. It is the (poor) teacher in me, I always think I’m talking to a class. Sorry about that. Looking back at the post, I think only the first sentence was to you, then off I went!
I apreciate you very much, sister, and am blessed by your posts because your pure heart comes through each time.
By the way, that is a wonderful verse, that few see or understand (here I go again) but yet it is the very verse forgotten that causes us to stray in the first place. The best any person can do is minister/guide from their own walk that can help another, but never replace 1 John 2:27. Also Matthew 23:8,9. Thanks Carolyn for the kind rebuke, and the scripture as well this is true fellowship and iron sharpening iron. I appreciate you, sister. there aren’t many Proverbs 31:10 women around today.

  28. Mickey – Thank you for your kind words, brother. I do the same sometimes to other people (the runaway teacher freight train). :) I appreciate your iron sharpening iron as well (you too, Mike!), and you (and many others here) have shown the true humility of Christian spirit, of which there is a dearth today. We need to bear with one another and show much grace. I’m still trying to figure many things out. Thank you.
