The Real Gospel as Opposed to Another Gospel

by Mike Ratliff

(Galatians 1:6-10 NA27)

6 I marvel that you are so quickly being turned from the one who called you in the grace of Christ to a different gospel; 7 which is not another; except there are some troubling you and are desiring to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel to you besides that which we preached to you, let him be a curse.  9 As we have previously said, and now again I say, if anyone preaches a gospel to you besides that which you received, let him be a curse.  10 For am I now trying to convince men or God? Or am I seeking to please men? If I were still pleasing men, I would not be Christ’s slave. (Galatians 1:6-10 a personal translation from the NA27 Greek text)

Along the lines of our last post which was from John MacArthur’s book, Ashamed of the Gospel, in which he summarized Charles Spurgeon’s struggle with the move towards Christian liberalism in England in the 19th Century. This move began earlier after the Puritan era and gained momentum as Christian leaders sought to become more appealing and less strict, more conciliatory and less divisive no matter the cost in terms of theology. While some held the high ground in terms of their own theology they saw no issue in the compromise in fellowshipping with those who held more “liberal” views than they or some of their peers did. As this trend continued the erosion lead to a spiraling down that became known as the Great Down Grade. In the end, the struggle led to the ejection of from England’s Baptist Union of Spurgeon himself because he had led the defense against the Down Grade. For Spurgeon it cost him his health, but for the Baptist Union it cost it it’s spiritual life. The liberals won the leadership and led the denomination into the death throes of Christian Liberalism. Yes, it still exists today, but it stands for nothing having lost its backbone. What would Charles Spurgeon think about that?

Carefully read the passage I placed at the top of this post (Galatians 1:6-10). Paul, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit says that those pervert the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ are literally “under the curse of God” or “devoted to destruction.” As believers, those whom God has saved from the wrath to come, we are not to be tolerant of false teaching. Instead, we are to consider such teaching and teachers as under God’s judgment. God will not tolerate a perversion of the Gospel because it is the only truth.

However, in our time the Gospel has been retold in all sorts of unbiblical ways. Some are outright lies while others are more subtle, for instance, there is the lie that is mostly true in which the Gospel is given, but that part about repentance and the lordship of Jesus Christ being necessary is left out. People want to make the narrow gate wide and easy, but that has never been God’s way. They want to remove the offense of the Cross, but it has to be there. Preaching against sin “puts people off, offends their sensibilities, puts them on the defensive, and makes them uncomfortable” is being cut from most churches in our time to make them more “seeker friendly.”

1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins  2 in which you once walked according to the world system of this age, according to ruler of the authority of the air, the spirit now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among whom also we all conducted ourselves once in the lusts of our flesh, indulging  the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and we were by nature children of wrath, as also the rest. (Ephesians 2:1-3 a personal translation from the NA27 Greek text)

Paul, speaking to Christians, told them and us that they were once just the rest of the world, which was dead in their own trespasses and sin in which they once walked according to the world system. There are no exceptions t this. A “Gospel message” or “theology” that does not address this is not biblical. In fact, it is false teaching. Those who teach these false teachings are teaching a different Gospel, and God will judge them for it.

The only Gospel is, “Trust in Jesus’ blood as the only redemption from sin.”

Soli Deo Gloria!

  1. This post is much needed Mike; today’s gospel is so watered down, it isn’t even recognizable; thus, it is a different gospel, an accursed gospel. Even well meaning Christians who do preach on sin and repentance have been known to ask an unregenerate when they might repent, I came across this in Ray Comfort’s ‘Genius’ movie. Repentance is not a choice, it is a command. Ray is well meaning, but I am not sure he grasps that we are not called to be successful, we are called to be faithful and proclaim the Gospel without any attachments, coercion, methods, or any type of work attached. Nor does he understand the deadness of unregenerate sinners and that repentance is a work of the ministry of the Holy Spirit. God will use His word to accomplish His purpose, either He saves a sinner by His word or He leaves them in their sin, according to His will.
I am convinced that those who adhere to the free will theology have no concept of sin and its bondage and power over every sinner ever born. There are multitudes who do not comprehend the doctrine of regeneration as well.

I agree with the late Dr. James Boice, we simply must return to the doctrines of grace. I have encountered numerous homosexuals who insist they are Christian, even though they are still practicing this perversion. They are not responsive to truth because some preacher has convinced them they just need to believe; even faith is a gift! You don’t hear that taught in most visible churches either. There is a famine in the land, a famine of biblical truth.

Praise the Lord for your continued stance for truth Mike.

  2. …And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
