The Macedonian Call

29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. (Acts 5:29 ESV)

The original title for this post was “Obedience,” but as I researched it there was a nagging voice telling me that I already had a post on my blog titled Obedience. So, I went back and found the original. I then thought about simply posting it again here, but then I became convicted that the research and prayer for this post was unique and not a copy of the earlier piece.

As many of you know, my wife and I left our old church in May of 2006 and have been pretty much without a church home since then. We have visited several churches. I liked most of them very much. The Sovereign Grace church in Overland Park that we have been visiting was probably the one I felt closest to during this time. However, none of them were “home.”

We left our old church because the leadership there was in about step 2 or 3 of their Purpose Driven Church implementation. For several weeks our pastor sermons were all about his new “vision” for the church. In April he gave the deacon body the Purpose Drive Church book to read. I didn’t read it. I already knew all about it thanks to the wonderful information found on Slice of Laodicea at that time from Pastor Ken Silva and others. In fact, Pastor Ken and his church prayed for my wife and I one Sunday that we would know whether to leave that church or stay and fight it out.

I was asked by our old pastor to give an account of how we should implement the PDC model. I did a lot of research and put together a 7 page document that laid out the theological fallacies and outright heretical aspects of its approach to doing church. I prayed a lot about giving it to my pastor. As I said earlier, Pastor Ken and his church were praying for me as well as many other readers of Slice. I gave the paper to my pastor along with his Purpose Driven Church book before church on the last Sunday in April. Several of my fellow Deacons quit talking to me that day. Others approached me wanting more information.

The next Sunday, my wife and I were out of town. That was the weekend the decision would be made by the leadership of the church whether to pursue the PDC model further or not. I got back in town late Sunday evening. No one from the church contacted us during the week. I prepared for my class as normal. On Sunday we went to church and I asked my closest friend on the Deacon board how the meeting went. He told me that it was decided to not implement the whole PDC model. They decided to modernize things instead with a more relaxed worship style, etc. I was a little disappointed, but I went ahead and worshipped there that Sunday and taught my class.

I went to the next Deacon’s meeting the following Saturday morning. I was stunned as the pastor and the Chairman of the Deacons kept talking about the changes they were going to start making over the Summer. They were going full tilt into the PDC model, no holds barred. I asked a few questions and I could tell that I was being excluded. That evening, I prepared for my class as normal, but I could not get my heart around the lesson. That was the first time that that had ever happened to me. We went to church the next morning and found that they had dissolved my class. We worshipped then left and went home after “church” that day. I could feel the eyes of the pastor boring into me as we walked out the front door. That was the last time either of us have been in that building.

Since then I have heard from some of our friends from my class. Some left the church right after we did while others stayed and went through the 40 Days of Purpose. I wept over that and prayed for those deceived people to have their eyes opened.

This morning, my wife and I visited a church in our home town that meets in a school just up the road from our house. As we were settling in to our seats I saw one of our friends from our old church in the row right behind ours. She and my wife are great friends. The worship service was wonderful. It was all based in and through the Sovereignty of God and the what Jesus had done for His people on the cross. We had Communion and my heart was soaring. That church is a like a large, very close family. We later had lunch with our friend from our former church who had been going to this church since October of last year.

She told us that she had gone back to our old church just before she had started going to the church we visited this morning. She said that it was more like a party than a church now. All of her friends there were gone. She recognized very few of the people there. She left and has not been back. She is a member of the church we visited today and she loves it. The sermons are both convicting and edifying. God is glorified and Man’s sin against the Law of God is preached. The church is growing and I am pretty sure that God is behind us being there today.

Now, how do we make decisions like this? Were my wife and I obedient to God in leaving that church? Were we obedient in waiting to join the “right” church? How do we know what God’s will is in these circumstances? The following passage from Acts describes how Paul and Silas made the decision to take the Gospel to Macedonia rather than going back East.

6 And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. 7 And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. 8 So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas. 9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. (Acts 16:6-10 ESV)

Well, I have never had a vision like Paul had, however, I have made decisions prayerfully in which I knew I was being obedient to God. How did this missionary team know not to speak the word in Asia or Bithynia? How do we know when to move and when to stop and when to stay put? Isn’t it by responding to the Providence of God as He “provides” or not as we pray fervently for direction? There have been times when I had my heart set on writing a post about something and just could not do it. All of my research into that subject was deadended. The more I sought the Lord’s face about doing it the more deadends I hit. I find this difficult to explain, but it is very hard for me to write these posts without a sense of following the Lord’s lead FROM HIS WORD. Of course I could just throw these together without praying and seeking the Lord’s will, but then all that you would read here would be totally outside of God’s grace and would not be edifying and would, in fact, be based in an through what I think and say instead of what God wants you to hear and learn. I pray that I will never do that.

We must be obedient to God. To be obedient we must know what the will of God is. How do we know it? We must get into His Word. We must learn it. Our consciences must become bound to it. We must learn orthodox doctrine. Yes, I’m sorry, but if we leave that one out then we will be in great danger of Christianity ala’ carte. There are some “churches” today who say that we can “Have it our way,” but that is having Jesus on our own terms. I can promise you that we are saved and we serve Him on HIS TERMS, not ours. We must also pray and seek His guidance. Do you think that God will tell us that we must obey Him and then not give us guidance and the information that we need in order to obey?

Those church leaders who have lead their flocks into the PDC and its imitators are not obeying God. They have led their flocks into a Humanistic form of Christianity that reverses everything. It puts people and their needs to the fore and makes God the vending machine who wants only to make the people happy. However, God is Sovereign. The end of all things is His glory not the happiness of Man. How could those men make this decision? Could it be that God has given them what they were idolizing? They want to have large growing churches that are accepted in society instead of being obedient to God in caring for their flocks by discipling them unto Christlikeness. Since their heart’s desire was nothing more than the idol of church growth, God has given it to them. They will now reap what they have sown. We must pray for God’s true sheep in those churches to come to themselves then come out of the apostasy. At the same time, my brethren, we must be constantly on the alert so that we will not follow after our enemy’s version of the gospel, or his way of doing church, or his way of living this Christian life. Instead, we must prayerfully “listen” as the Lord providentially leads us through this life of obedience and service.

  2. We went thru PDL for the second time last year. This time I had to say something, we were invited out the door shortly after that. It wasn’t long after that we started a Bible study in our home as any churches that might have been worth looking into have since picked up PDL themselves. The sufficiency of the Scriptures has been our first lesson and biggest comfort in all this. Blessings, grace and peace to you and yours…

  3. Mike,

Could it be that many years ago the Apostle Paul understood the spiritual fornication that was taking place in his hour, and how this disobedience to the Word of the Living GOD would have far reaching consequences into the future our hour.

For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to ONE HUSBAND, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpant beguiled Eve through his subtility, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

Could it be the solution to the present madness that permeates the church in this hour is SIMPLE OBEDIENCE once again to the WORD OF THE LORD.

Jesus saith unto her, GO, call thy HUSBAND, and come hither.

    The CHURCH answered and said…

  4. Bob, yes brother you are exactly right. Isn’t it painful when our relationship with a church is severed like that? I still hurt from it. As ron says in his comment above and as you say, the simplicity of the scripture coupled with our devotion to Him and Him alone is where we meet God. The PDL drives a wedge between the people and God. They come to be entertained, to have their flesh and ears tickled. It is idolatry pure and simple.

Yes brother, if we boil it all down, the root cause of all of this is man’s idolatry of the heart which refuses to remain faithful to our Lord. Instead this humanism blinds people’s spiritual eyes and God gives them over to their lusts and it just spirals down from there. What is the cure? It as you said, SIMPLE OBEDIENCE to the WORD OF THE LORD. It is all about repentance as a way of life.

  8. Mike,

I appreciate reading the account of your journey away from the seeker sensitive movement. I wonder sometime if you could comment on the relationship between the discernment described in this article and the principles you laid out in the excellent “Judge Not” series. The reason I ask is because when I begin to discuss the PDC model with leaders in my church, they counter with the idea that I am judging with a critical spirit, and (like the Pharisees) resisting God’s movement for today. These are difficult arguments to counter, unless you finally come to the place of saying, “They’re wrong, and I’m right.” This is a place I go only with great fear and trembling.

    Grace to you!

  9. David,

You hit a very critical point which I have been wanting to address, but have not put those pieces together as of yet. Remember the context of Jesus command to Judge Not! Wasn’t it that we must not judge hypocritically? If I rebuke someone or even a group like the “seeker-sensitive” group and I am not very consistent in my own personal holiness then I am guilty of being a hypocrite. However, if I am actively pursing personal holiness by immersing myself in God’s Word and obeying Him in all parts of my life while confessing and repenting when I don’t then I am in a position to be used by God to rebuke those who are leading the sheep astray, etc. Also, we must rebuke them with a loaded weapon, never from a position of “feelings” or “preferences.” That loaded weapon is God’s Word. That is why I used an excellent article I found on the 9Marks Website as the basis for my objection to the PDC at my old church. The author of that article approached his rebuke from a position of humility and laser like precision using nothing but scripture to address each point of the Purpose Driven Church’s agenda. It was amazingly eye opening. Also, we must never rebuke unless we pray deeply and fervently about it beforehand (if that is possible.) Sometimes we must speak at a certain moment and we don’t have time to prepare. That’s okay, God will give us the words to speak as long as we are doing His will.

I have become convinced that God is using the PDC and all other Seeker-Sensitive encroachments in the church to clearly separate His people from those who are spiritually blinded by their idolatry of the heart. The PDC is Humanism to the core. Its focus is on people not God. That alone is reason enough to reject it.

Here is a clear test for you to use with people who are supporting the PDC. Point out how the PDC forces compromise on theological points that must be Black and White. Watch their response. The Lord will give you the discernment you need to see their spiritual blindness. An example is that the Gospel is not the Gospel if it is not preached in its entirety. That means we must preach the Holiness and Righteousness of God and how all Men are sinners who can’t save themselves unless they believe and repent on the Lord Jesus Christ. Seeker-sensitive people will leave out the wrath of God, His Law and the need to repent. Instead, they say all a person has to do is allow Jesus to come into their lives. Use this to contrast what you know is Biblically sound with their man-made gospel and watch their reaction. If they refuse to repent of this then we must withdraw from such as these. Pray for them, yes, but we must not compromise the Gospel.

Sorry to go on and on here. I am still formulating this as a future post. Thanks for the question.

Interesting point. Are you saying that most professing Christians are living in a state of spiritual adultery? I agree with that. When God turned me around and brought me back to Him, it was amazing how “cleansed” I became. I repented of my humanism and recommitted myself to serving my Lord—His way.

I believe that my main purpose here in this ministry is to be used by God to teach this very thing. He will then use the truth to draw out His people from adultery, turn them around and cleanse them.

When He did that in my life I was totally amazed at how I could suddenly see things on a spiritual level that I was totally blind to before. When I fought this battle in my old church, I was dumbfounded at the level of spiritual blindness in those who would not listen. They are deceived and all professing Christians in spiritual adultery are deceived.

My wife and I are currently in the process of leaving our current Bible church we have been attending for 3 years because it has slid more and more into the PD and Seeker Friendly mind-set. This is after leaving our SBC church of 8 years which broke our heart. It’s tough going in NW Houston. We have visited several churches, both SBC which could be poster children for the CGM. Oddly enough, I had just been reading on Slice about how the word “Christian” is now “out” and “Christ Follower” now being the in term. The paster at one of the Churches used “Christ Follower” at least 4 times during his “iChange” sermon but not once the word “Christian”. Nothing wrong per se, I just found that very interesting in regards to how these pastors sold out to CGM all seem to jump on the latest bandwagon.

Yesterday we “visited” another SBC church. I say “visited” because when we entered we were greated by a very polite man who welcomed us and showed us where the visitor booth was located. This was in the middle of the spacious lobby with comfy couches and fountains. Then I saw the Starbucks counter and the caffinistas. My wife and I looked at each other and I said “Hon, let’s take a look down here”. “Here” was another exit at the end of the hall which we made for in all due haste. I know in reality it’s very sad but we started laughing hysterically when we got back in our car. These people copy the Saddleback model like mindless clones. It’s amazing (in a bad way) how exactly similar these two churches were. The PDC franchise marches on — literally. We are still “seeking”. Hey, we may even have to settle for a Reformed church. I’ve started prepping my wife just for such a contingency. 🙂

    Best Regards,

  18. I have never been to a PDC so I can’t relate to your experience per se but I have been to churches I didn’t agree with doctrinally and left. I did picked up on what you said about knowing the will of God “FROME HIS WORD” because my Sunday school has been learning the shorter catechism and we are on questions 39-44. 39 is “What is the duty which God requireth of man?” “The duty which God requireth of man, is obedience to His REVEALED will.” Many of us skipped over this thinking, “Yes, we need to do His will.” My pastor stopped us and said, “There is a word here that is very important for us to see. It’s the word ‘revealed’.” He went on to state that when he was a youth he somehow got the concept in his mind that we didn’t know God’s will in certain situations and that we were to pray really hard to figure out what it was. An example was his friend who stayed up all night praying over which seminary school he was to go to and he couldn’t “hear” from God which one. My pastor stated that God doesn’t play games with us. He doesn’t say, “Now, I have a will for you that you are suppose to determine by climbing up to where I am and guessing what is in my mind.” My pastor went on to give us Scripture to show us how his thinking had been off until his late teens. Deut. 29:29, Micah 6:8, 1John 5:2-3, Romans 12:2. I had already known this teaching from John MacArthur, but my mother found freedom in this teaching from my pastor. For some reason she never heard John M. it in quite the same way as my pastor presented it. I, however, came away with a renewed sense of wanting to search the Scriptures to learn His will. My pastor did say that we need to learn His will but also pray for discernment when applying His will. I also realized that if we learned His revealed will to us, then we wouldn’t be giving our own opinions on how things should be done. Our own opinions influences our children and their children and sometimes those around us creating a culture. Thus, we move from a God centered culture to a man centered culture. We then have to start pleasing the most dominate culture in our generation. God never changes…His culture never changes and neither should ours. We would never have to be seeker friendly toward anyone but to Christ.

I read your post today with great interest. My wife and I had a similar experience that began in 1999.

We had been serving at our church since 1989–my wife in various ministries (i.e. nursery, women’s ministry, etc.), myself, primarily in teaching Senior High and Adult Sunday School classes. I also served as an Elder for a brief period. In a nutshell, as soon as we spoke out against the PD methods, we were labeled as troublemakers. We saw an immediate change in attitude toward us–we received hate mail and phone calls. The end came when I refused to support a building program that was orchestrated by the Pastors and a few of the Elders utilizing very questionable/unreliable information. I was told that I either needed to support the leaders or step down from my teaching position because they couldn’t have someone with my influence (our SS class ran 75 – 100 weekly) undermining the progress of the congregation. I stepped down.

Right before we left, two Elders approached me and informed me that: “All you want to do is discuss doctrine. We don’t discuss doctrine around here…it’s too divisive.” The other man stated: “What difference does it make whether a person believes they are chosen or predestined or whatever you want to call it. Who the h*** cares!”

We left that church in 2005 and began attending Bethel Baptist Church in Owasso, OK. Bro Bill Ascol is the Senior Pastor there—I love it. I have no doubt that God led us there and that our decision to “obey God rather than man” was the right decision.

  20. John (Houston),

Brother, this tune is becoming all too frequently heard isn’t it? It was so refreshing yesterday to go that church that doesn’t even have its own building. They meet in the auditorium of an elementary school not far from my house. While they are what I would call traditional SBC, the sweetness of doctrinally sound preaching was wonderful to this heart of mine. The church we left was a SBC church in the same association as the one we visited. However, the pastor at this new church as well as his wife were adamant that “seeker-sensitivity” is nothing more than humanism repackaged as a religion. While this church may not be as Reformed as I would prefer, I can deal with that as long the Gospel is preached biblically, which it was yesterday. Praise be to God. I pray that God will lead you to the Church He has for you.

  21. Sarah,

Amen my sister! I find that discerning God’s will about things isn’t some sort of game. You are right about that. He is talking to us and revealing things to us all the time. We just have to listen. We must always seek His will from His Word. If we believe God wants us to do something, but what that is is contrary IN ANY WAY to the revealed will of God from His Word then we had better forget it.

Also, what a lot of people forget is that God designed our conscience to be bound to the highest level of truth or values it can grasp. There are no higher values than what we learn in scripture so if we ground ourselves in His Word then when it’s time to make a decision we must listen to our conscience AND check it out with the Word if there is any doubt or question.

That is what is so tragic with Christian leaders taking their flocks into seeker-sensitivity. They are spiritually blind as bats because they have been given over to their idolatry. This shuts down the conscience’s ability to be heard by our hearts. It is like a level of callous has been grown there so that we can’t discern anything. Sad, very sad indeed.

Well stated in that these leaders need to wake up. Those “Christians” ate up with seeker-sensitivity are blind to what they are doing. They are actually believing they are pleasing God by manipulating people by entertaining their flesh. Isn’t this just a form of not believing that the Holy Spirit will work in the hearts of people who hear the genuine Gospel preached to them? I believe God has given them over to their lusts or idolatry. Yes, we must continue to pray for them.

As I read your blog and then read the comments, I have to agree with you about the Lord seperating. I have heard more and more about families leaving churches because of PDC.

Our last church has lost members that have been at this church since it started. SOme of these folks have been there 50 years and are charter members. It was such a difficult decision for them to make but God lead them out.

The Pastor is steeped in Rick Warren. The y had small groups formed to study the Purpose Driven book together. We bowed out and that was the beginning of the end at the church. We heard to much of what Rick Warren had to say from the pulpit then what the word of God said. It is so hard to find another church because I said a time before, most of the churches here in our city are using PD books. Thank you for sharing.

You nailed it in your statment that you were hearing too much of Rick Warren and not enough from the Word of God. That really is a huge part of the problem. Perhaps our shepherds are not willing to submit to Lordship of Christ as they should because if they did then they would also teach what the Word says instead of what men say it says.

  28. Mike,

Good Post! I remember seeing your name in the comments section sometimes at slice, but I had no idea you were in my neck of the woods. I’m in smithville, about 15 min. from kansas city, mo. My family and I also left a rick warren/bill hybels church almost a year ago. It broke our hearts. We had been there almost 20 years. We started doing PDL when it first came out, and I’m sad and embarrased to say that we didn’t notice the errors right away. We finally started seeing how the sermons were always going along with the book of the week, everything seemed like a couseling session, and it became clear that the sermons and sunday school lessons were all fluff and no meat. We were starving. It then got worse as we headed into the emrgent movement. I hadn’t heard of that at the time, but started researching the books we were using. Slice and other sites were very helpful. I couldn’t believe what I was reading about the purpose driven stuff and the mingling of mysticism I was seeing in this new teaching. We went to the leaders in our church with all of this documented, but to no avail. They pretty much thought we were crazy and divisive. These were our friends. They had known us all these years. To kick us to the curb without even looking into what we had shown them, about killed us. We are now at a good church who is aware of this stuff and is steering clear, but it’s hard because this emergent stuff is creeping in everywhere. We are an SBC church, and this past year, because of my warning leaders at the state level, was nominated to the executive board here. I’m sure you know this, but boy is this an uphill battle. I know how deep this is inside our convention, but we really do have leaders here at the state level who are actually fighting me and others who are trying to get the word out about PDL and emergent. I am so floored at that. I guess I’m niave, but I thought once they saw the documented facts on this stuff, they’d run. Not so. They have lots of behinds in the seats, and that proves success to them. Sorry this is so long. Just wanted to lend support to a fellow midwesterner, and say keep up the good work. The word is getting out, but many leaders don’t want it to, but it needs to get to the masses, because I’m finding many who are in the dark on this.

Our treasure is in heaven, praying that God is merciful to us and our former church family.

    God bless

  31. Mike,

A PDC is not new to the history of man or the people of God. I think one of the first incidents of this type of church is found in Exodus 32:1-9. What you have are the masses (the people of Israel) demanding of the ministry leadership (Aaron) to give them what they want (a god of their making). Aaron gives in and makes the idol and then calls for a celebration (worship service) that turns into a wild party. What happened here in Exodus is my understanding of the basic principle of how a PDC operates. Find out what the people want and give it to them. Didn’t work then and doesn’t work now. Angered the Lord then and surely does now. Brought punishment to people then and will certainly bring punishment again in our time. What a church needs is leadership that is hearing what the Lord wants and giving it to the body of Christ. Paul said these things happened as a warning to us. Warnings are meant to be heeded. Just like Moses called for those who were on the Lord’s side to separate from those wanting to go on in their foolish rebellion, we must separate ourselves from the foolish pursuits of these PDC supporters.

  32. Loddie,

Amen brother. I agree with your analysis. That is why we must repent and seek the Lord’s face in brokenness as we do separate ourselves from the apostates. Great comment!
