The Deception of Universalism – Part 2

by Mike Ratliff

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” (Matthew 7:13-14 ESV)

As has been pointed out by some, the heresy of Universalism, no matter how wonderfully it is packaged, is easily refuted from Sacred Scripture if we practice solid exegetical techniques. If we keep everything in context then the passages used so support Universalism prove to not support this false doctrine at all, but are about other things. My focus on writing these few posts on universalism was to address what we are seeing today as more and more former solid Bible teachers join the ranks of those who teach ‘The Restoration of All Things in Ages to Come.’ This teaching is very subtle and seductive as well as appealing to those who have loved ones who do not walk with the Lord. However, it is unsupported in the Bible.

Look carefully at the passage I placed at the top of this post. These are our Lord’s own words. Was he describing the differences between two groups of people? Isn’t this passage telling us that one group of people enter by the narrow gate (Christ) while most people do not? The entering is required in order to have life, but only a few find it. Think of the Genesis account of the Flood. God sent the flood upon the Earth specifically to wipe out, to destroy the people, but out of this He saved 8 Souls, Noah, his wife, his three sons and their wives. Everyone else was destroyed. God has not changed my brethren.

Before we go to scripture let’s look at what this doctrinal position, ‘The Restoration of All Things in Ages to Come,’ really is. Restorationists teach that there will be a restoration of all things as they were before the fall; a perfect state. Virtually all Christians have thought that their approach to Christianity is the right one, but Restorationists believe that the true form or emphasis has been lost for a long time and they are being used by God to restore the original. Many proponents of Restorationism vehemently deny that what they teach is universalism. However, what they teach, using mountains of scripture references by-the-way, is that those who die in Christ now will be with the Lord forever. No problem there, but then they add some form of teaching that seeks to include either all professing Christians regardless of whether they abided in Christ to the end or not, or all humanity. An example of the former is found in Charles Stanley’s Handbook for Christian Living (1996).

Where is this place represented by the “outer darkness” in Jesus’ parables? To be in “outer darkness” is to be in the kingdom of God but outside the circle of men and women whose faithfulness on this earth earned them a special rank or position of authority. (page 126)

This teaching is an attempt to include ‘outer darkness’ as described by our Lord as within the Kingdom of God, but outside of the area where the faithful believers are. In other words he is attempting to include a group of people into God’s Kingdom who did not meet the requirement to be with our Lord. I suppose this would include professing Christians who are apostate or left the church or who were not really ‘sincere.’ Let’s look at our Lord’s description of ‘outer darkness’ and those who will end up there.

When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 8:10-12 ESV)

Our Lord was speaking about Jews here. Our Lord is responding to the great faith of the Roman Centurion. He compares his faith with the unbelief of the Jews all around Him. He describes people coming from the east and west (Gentiles) and take their place but that the subjects of the kingdom (the Jews) will be thrown into outer darkness. They are cast into outer darkness because of their rejection of Christ.

Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the close of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear. (Matthew 13:40-43 ESV)

Our Lord talks here of a fiery furnace. Notice that in it is weeping and gnashing of teeth just as there is in outer darkness. Who’s in there? Sinful people are there. Using Charles Stanley’s explanation of ‘outer darkness’ above should we also believe that this fiery furnace is also in Heaven. Instead of playing games with these words shouldn’t we heed our Lord as He said, He who has ears, let him here.”? We see the same ‘problem’ for Charles Stanley’s statement in following verse.

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. So it will be at the close of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 13:47-50 ESV)

For ‘outer darkness’ to be in heaven, then the wicked must be there as well.

And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.’ But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests. “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ (Matthew 22:1-13 ESV)

The Bible tells us that in God there is no darkness and He cannot be in the presence of sin. However, if we believe Charles Stanley, not only is there darkness in heaven, but some sinful believers will be tied hand and foot and there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’ and begins to beat his fellow servants and eats and drinks with drunkards, the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 24:42-51 ESV)

I am sure you see the pattern here. The key words in Jesus’ descriptions of those who do not end up with Him is that where they are there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. However, using Charles Stanley’s statement it would seem that there will be hypocrites who have been cut in pieces in heaven with genuine believers and their Lord.

He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.’ But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ (Matthew 25:24-30 ESV)

This servant was called lazy, wicked and worthless, and was thrown outside into the darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth and yet Charles Stanley claims he is in heaven. If you asked him is he is a universalist I am sure he would deny it, however, what he is doing with his ‘Once Saved Always Saved’ theology is taking the narrow gate and the hard way attempting to make them very wide and easy. This is not rational nor is it intellectually honest nor is the product of proper exegesis. Instead, what we have is man-loving, man-pleasing theology which fools innumerable into believing that they are Christians even though they are not regenerate and because of that, there is no repentance. These are the ‘servants’ that our Lord spoke of being rebuked, tied up, cut into pieces, and cast into outer darkness, which is also the fiery furnace.

In varying degrees, other Christian Universalists teach that everyone who dies outside of Christ will spend some time in ‘outer darkness,’ but will eventually be allowed to believe and become part of God’s Kingdom. In the posts The Echo and Insufficiency of Hell, Part 1 and The Echo and Insufficiency of Hell, Part 2, John Piper clearly showed that this is unbiblical.

Let us look at some Scripture that speaks of God’s eternal judgement on the wicked as well as the state of the Righteous.

He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality. (Romans 2:6-11 ESV)

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. (John 5:24-29 ESV)

but you do not believe because you are not part of my flock. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. (John 10:26-28 ESV)

What do we have so far? Only Christ’s sheep here His voice, all who do not hear his voice, because they are not His sheep, are damned.

And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed. (Acts 13:48 ESV)

Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. (1 John 3:15 ESV)

And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. (1 John 5:11-12 ESV)

Let’s review. There are ONLY two groups of people and they are marked by who they are and what their eternal destiny is. Look at these two lists.

The Sheep

  1. Are Resurrected unto life
  2. Have Eternal Life
  3. Are Wheat instead of tares (weeds)
  4. Have Everlasting life
  5. Have Life Eternal
  6. Are Sheep
  7. Have life

The Goats

  1. Are Resurrected unto damnation
  2. Will have tribulation and anguish
  3. Are tares (weeds) instead of wheat
  4. Have everlasting contempt
  5. Will receive everlasting punishment
  6. Are Goats
  7. Will have destruction

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. (Matthew 7:13-14 ESV)

The wide, easy way leads to the resurrection of damnation, everlasting contempt, destruction, everlasting punishment, tribulation and anguish. However, the narrow way leads to eternal life, life eternal, the resurrection of life. Only few will find the narrow way, the rest will find the broad, easy way of destruction.

In light of what we have seen, is a doctrinal stance that, at some future age, God will relent of His judgment against those in the Lake of Fire, which is outer darkness and the fiery furnace, viable? We do not find that in scripture. It is wishful thinking and when men teach these ‘destructive heresies’ they are actually working counter to the Great Commission. They are actually teaching that it makes no difference eternally whether one is genuine Christian or not since all paths lead to a ‘Restoration of all things’ in some future age.

From this understanding we must proclaim the truth. We must give the Gospel to all and explain that all of us are doomed, dead in our sins, and can do nothing to save ourselves from God’s Judgment. We must have a redeemer, a Saviour. He is the Lord Jesus Christ. He came and lived as man, yet sinless. He was crucified with sinful men by wicked men. Our Father in Heaven imputed our sin unto Him as He died on the cross. He paid the penalty for us. He took the wrath of God in our place. How do we attain the offer of eternal life? We must believe in Jesus, that He is our only way to salvation. Believe on Him now, place your trust in Him alone as your Lord and Saviour. Repent of your unbelief and your sins and receive Jesus Christ as the Lord of your life. This is the way of the cross. Jesus said that all that come to Him must deny themselves, take up their crosses and follow Him. This is the call. Those who reject it will find out first hand what outer darkness is all about.

  1. I understand the need to argue for correct biblical interpretation, but some times I think that arguing against Universalism is like arguing against the existence of the easter bunny.
The idea of universalism is so ridiculous that it shouldn’t even be given a second’s worth of attention.

It’s sad that we even have to spend time talking about such things.

mk. 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

of course if one is a unie…that would mean if one believes not they are damned to salvation…

but i would really like to talk about the reconciliation/restoration of all things…here is a section that many unie’s point ot in an effort to support their doctrine…nevermind that the last three verses when kept in context refute the whole idea of what they are using verse 20 for…..

    col1:19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;

20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled

22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

    23 IF YE CONTINUE IN THE FAITH GROUNDED AND SETTLED AND BE NOT MOVED AWAY FROM THE HOPE OF THE GOSPEL, which ye have heard, and WHICH WAS preached to EVERY creature WHICH IS under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

is26: In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks.

2 Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

    4
Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

5 For he bringeth down them that dwell on high; the lofty city, he layeth it low; he layeth it low, even to the ground; he bringeth it even to the dust.

6 The foot shall tread it down, even the feet of the poor, and the steps of the needy.

7 The way of the just is uprightness: thou, most upright, dost weigh the path of the just.

8 Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee.

9 With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

10 Let favour be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the LORD.

11 LORD, when thy hand is lifted up, they will not see: but they shall see, and be ashamed for their envy at the people; yea, the fire of thine enemies shall devour them.

12 LORD, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our works in us.

    goes good with col 1:19-23…imo…

and this as well..read the whole parable though…i did not post it because of length…

lk19:27 But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

of course at this point, when judge, ment is mentioned…the unie’s start saying…but but but…every knee will bow and every tongue confess on that great day…and and and…what about rom 10:9-10…

but that is easily refuted as well, and it does not quite say what they claim it says…

  4. Louis,

The reason we are posting this is that there is a much larger movement than most are aware of called Christian Universalism. Many “Christian” leaders are starting to espouse this nonsense. These are warnings so that genuine Christians will be able to spot this when it comes as part of the Great Delusion.

Rob Bell and others in the “Emergent” movement are teaching Universalism as they attempt to dismantle Orthodoxy. Any attack on the viability of the doctrine of Hell, the Lake of Fire and the existence of Satan, etc. are attacks against the teaching of the Final Judgement. Therefore, we must raise this issue because even though, as you stated, it is not biblically viable, perhaps God will use these red flags to reveal to many to stay away from these heresies.

  5. As much as we don’t want to think about the fact we could loose loved ones to the lake of fire, it is a reality. It’d be nice to believe all will make it somehow, but that just isn’t true. Its a hard pill to swallow right now, but when we get there, I think all will be reveiled and we will see that our Lord is just. We want the truth no matter how bad it hurts. Not facing the fact that universalism is false may be a coping mechanism for some now, but as for me, I want all truth no matter what.

  7. Would it not be something someone who wasn’t would want to make clear? And is it not easy to make it clear? Even if a person was going to discuss some things that could be misinterpreted. For example:

“While I might use some terminology that seems to push our understanding of the atonement and its application, I want to make it very clear I do not espouse universalism and only sinners born again before they die will inherit eternal life while the lost will live eternally separated from God.”

I mean, how hard is that? Unless of course you cannot make that statement honestly…

  8. Isn’t Universalism the same as the ‘Gospel of Inclusion?’ That Jesus saved all of mankind. (I don’t believe that nonsense) I guess that is the same as believing that God is all religions. If God were all religions (which we know he is not), then that would mean that he changes, he doesn’t quite know who he is, he is confused, and it is impossible to know him (because he would have no certain identity).

  9. Yes it is Josh. I have been wading through a large number of universalists writings over the last several days. It is a very odd thing to be reading these “fellows” praising God and proclaiming the good news of the Gospel out of one side of their mouths then poo-pooing Hell, the Lake of Fire, out of the other side of their mouths. Their Biblical proofs are spurious.

However, never forget this, there is demonic power behind these teachings and as we go through them we must be very careful to not listen to the questioning that happens in our consciences as the evil spirit makes it seem as if God is telling you that, “maybe this guy is right…” God is good though, He provides the way of escape, which is usually revelation of what is wrong with what they are teaching and how they ‘insist’ that all of Christianity has got it wrong since the 1st Century and they have it all figured out and are being led by God to bring the Church back to its primitive roots. I suppose you have heard that from Rob Bell and company haven’t you?

This is why we must be grounded in God’s Word. I know most reading these posts are wondering why we are spending so much time on these things since it is so clear the universalism is unbiblical, however, it is the core of the deception that more and more church folks are falling for. It is at the heart of ‘Once Saved Always Saved.’ It is at the heart of the man-loving oriented ‘Christianity’ as opposed to God-focused and God-glorifying Christianity.

  10. I came upon this verse. You know the typical response when you appear to be narrow minded instead of truth minded. Since the world hates the truth, then those who expose the lies of universalism will most often be called ‘dividers.’ Universalists believe that they are true uniters of men because they sincerely believe that God is whatever you want him to be. He is reduced to an idol.

I would like to show a verse which encourages Christians not only to avoid Universalism, but to expose it. Make it known to the public. Blow a whistle. Make sure that others hear. Rock the boat or whatever.

“Walk as children of the light (for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, BUT INSTEAD EXPOSE THEM. For it is shameful even to speak of things that they do in secret. BUT WHEN ANYTHING IS EXPOSED BY THE LIGHT, IT BECOMES VISIBLE………” Ephesians 5:8-14 (ESV)

On the side of the ark was a banner which read, “Smile, God Loves You.” I don’t know if this was intended to refute God’s judgment, but it was very popular among atheists.

I would like to see another cartoon with a similiar banner which does not say what their’s says, but one which would say, “GOD IS JUST BECAUSE HE JUDGES SIN.” I think that would be a powerful counter ad.

  12. Josh,

The first ad you mentioned was what I consider a Straw Man Fallacy attack. It is attacking the insipid ‘message’ of the Compromised Church that says, “God Loves you Just the Way you Are.” When people preach the gospel, but use that nonsense then unbelievers get mixed signals don’t they? They get the message that God loves them just the way they are, but if they don’t say that prayer and go to Church every Sunday then he is going to judge them. It makes no sense to a rational mind. No, the real Gospel preaches our offense and how God’s wrath burns against us, but through Christ we have the Good News and the way of escape God provided through the Son. If we would preach this Gospel then we may very well drive some away because of the fierceness of the message, but God would use that to save His people out of the hearers. If we would obediently preach the truth, the Holy Spirit would work through us to do that.

I am convinced that Satan is behind OSAS and this man-loving and God-misrepresenting non-gospel that is so popular in our ‘churches.’ I think this void of truth is why universalism is gaining converts.

Islam (another false religion) teaches that it is ok to lie to a non Muslim. This being said, Jimmy Carter is a fool and Hamas is snickering behind his back. Hamas and Hezbollah are terrorists and we should never negotiate with them. Bush himself is a unitarian by his own admission because he believes there are many paths to heaven. He believes that and says that openly.

What about perseverance of the saints , the doctrine that God successfully preserves in faith all of the elect so that they are never lost. 16. papajames,

Please do not confuse OSAS (Once Saved Always Saved) with the Perseverance of the Saints. They are not the same thing at all. The difference is this, We believe that God will preserve HIs people, that they will continue to the end because God works in them to cause this to happen. OSAS states that anyone who professes Christ is saved, regardless of their level of apostasy. They include people into the Kingdom that in no way live lives that reflect the presence of God’s grace in them. OSAS is not biblical, but Perseverance of the Saints is.

People cling to OSAS out of sentimental reasons. They don’t want to think of loved ones, or even themselves, of not being genuinely saved even though they are worldly, fleshly people who never even consider Christ in what they do.

Universalism does give one a ‘ticket’ to OSAS just say this simple little prayer. Its carnal. Sometimes I wonder what Jesus meant when he said ‘Peace, peace, then sudden distruction’. They say us Amillers take everything spiritually. But personally I see it is almost always both spiritual and literal. And this universalism is just one of the many false teachings in the worldly churches.

  27. Ah John,

You would think that you would know scripture by the way you write, but your use of shows that you don’t. Also, your acrostic is nothing but an anecdote.

    Try these on for size:

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever! (Psalms 111:10 ESV)

And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. (Matthew 10:28 ESV)

And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. (Luke 1:50 ESV)

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. (Philippians 2:12-13 ESV)

Your use of that verse is not with understanding. The fear that is cast out is not the fear of God, but the fear of men, the fear of eternity, the fear of not making it to the end, etc. However, we are never to lose the fear of God and that means we must approach Him with reverential fear and know for certain that all of our works and words and thoughts will be judged.

  28. Hey if Fear of the Lord works for you, then be my guest. My decision to trust that God has written on my mind and Heart what I need to know about him is good enough for me. LOVE is the answer for me , not FEAR, but far be it for me to stop you from FEARING Him.

    Have a nice day

  29. John T.,

Your understanding of scripture is very shallow. I am sorry that you are offended, but there is more to this Christianity than your feelings and “what works for you.” Christianity is not relative no matter how much you try to make it so. That was what I was trying to show you. Relativism is of our enemy, why not shed his lies and approach our Lord and your sanctification with the fear and trembling that we are commanded to do in scripture? Don’t you want to hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” from our Lord? If you refuse to obey what is clearly commanded to us in scripture then you will most certainly NOT hear that from Him.

  30. Ok Mike

Im going to ask a couple of questions, and if possible I would like an honest answer from you. Does the word “hell” appear anywhere in the old or new testatments original writings? And if not, what words were translated to get the word “hell” and what are there actual meanings other than a fiery place of eternal torment?

  31. John T,

Well, well, well what have we here? I find this very interesting and telling that you tried to disclaim anything other than trying to “spice things up.” I suspect that you did not come up with these questions. At first I thought of refusing to answer your questions unless you told me who gave them to you.

Also, I wonder at your tone. What do you mean by ‘if possible I would like an honest answer’ What other sort of answer have I ever given? It as if you are implying the opposite.

You must not have read the article you are commenting on because I did answer this in it to a point… Well, here is my understanding of ‘Hell.’

The term ‘lake of fire’ is simply two words in Greek found in four verses in the book of Revelation. Here are the four verses.

And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. (Revelation 19:20 ESV)

and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. (Revelation 20:10 ESV)

Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:14 ESV)

And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:15 ESV)

The Greek word for lake is λιμνην. It simply means a pond or lake of any size.
The Greek word for fire is πυρος. It simply means lightening or fiery or fire.

Notice that it was prepared for Satan and his angels. It burns with sulfur and burns forever. It is the second death. That means that all people die physically, but those not in Christ will experience the second death, which is the lake of fire. Those who are not in Christ are those whose names are not found written in the book of life.

Jesus referred to this lake of fire as Outer Darkness and the Fiery Furnace and the place of weeping and gnashing of teeth.:

When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 8:10-12 ESV)

These are all references to the Lake of Fire.

Prior to Christ’s Crucifixion all who died went to Hades which was divided into two parts, Paradise and Tartarus. The former was Abraham bosom while the later is often translated as ‘HELL” in the older translations, but it is hades. After the crucifixion our Lord removed all the Righteous from Paradise and took them to Heaven. At the Final Judgement HADES will deliver the dead it it to be judged and then cast into the lake of fire (Rev 20:13).
