Are There Two Christianities?

by Mike Ratliff

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. (2 Timothy 4:1-4 ESV)

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20 ESV)

The great divide between what is genuine Christianity and what claims to be, but isn’t, is becoming more and more clear, it seems, everyday. We have seen the type of “Christian” that the Purpose Driven Church paradigm produces in the sorry situation in which a PDC apologist, Richard Abanes, attempted to get a Christian blog taken off line by threatening the blogger’s ISP with a legal action implying that a certain post contained objectionable, slanderous, or libelous material against him. I am convinced that this is only the beginning. This incident was the result of a “debate” in which the blogger, Ken Silva, refused to back down against the insistence by Abanes that any attempt to show the unbiblical nature of the seeker-sensitive, church growth, or Purpose Driven paradigms was inherently devious and wrong.

This apologist’s form of debate takes the form of seeking to overwhelm whoever he is confronting with point-by-point critiques that are designed to frustrate any response. He implies that whoever he is debating has been judged by God on the scales of justice and has been found lacking. He used that one on me once. In any case. The article on Ken Silva’s blog which he wanted removed was over 3 years old. The message we are receiving from the Purpose Driven movement is that it is not to be criticized by anyone. They will not allow any negative exposition that shows the unbiblical nature of it or of Rick Warren’s P.E.A.C.E plan.

I read a comment today from a youth pastor who frequents a blog that is highly critical of Christian Research Network. In response to the fact that slander was never proved, this young man stated that slander doesn’t have to be proven as long as Richard Abanes felt like he had been slandered. Now think with me here. What does this reveal to us? Isn’t this the same thing that is preached in the counterfeit Church in that our religion is one of choice, and that how we serve God is up to us, and that the Purpose Driven method of doing church by what the majority of people desire is right while preaching the Word, and Worshiping God according to His will is old-fashioned and ineffective? Instead, the New Evangelism, the Purpose Driven Church Paradigm along with the Word of Faith Movement all “do church” according to what pleases people. This is all focused on pleasing men not God. The result is tragic as the gospel they preach is neutered by removing any mention of sin, judgment, and hell.

Watch the video below as a worldly youth Pastor argues with a street evangelist insisting that telling people they are sinners is ungodly and wrong.

I have been saying for sometime now that God is clarifying His church. The counterfeit church is the predominate form of Christianity right now, however, it takes many forms itself. There are Unitarians and other Universalists. There are many forms of Liberal Churches. There are some who are all wrapped up in works salvation. Then there are the Word of Faith churches and their leaders. Even though they all appear quite different, they all have one thing in common. They are all about being men-pleasers. They insist on being called Christian and seek to be unified together as mainstream churches with the cry that we should ignore our doctrinal differences and simply unite because we claim the same saviour. However, our Lord’s standards are quite a bit higher and more demanding.

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits. (Matthew 7:13-20 ESV)

I have always understood that fruit in our Lord’s parables usually equated to works, however, what we must never forget is that the doctrines we hold are also part of that. What we teach and preach is part of our fruit. Therefore, how can we know false prophets and preachers and churches to stay away from? We look at their doctrines and if they are not biblical then we have nothing to do with them. This implies that we must know proper doctrine. That is important, but fortunately genuine Christians also have the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we must pray and know the Word of God so that we can know the truth and never compromise it. The number one indicator that a church or preacher or teacher is false is whether what they teach and preach is focused towards God’s glory alone or if its focus is to please men. The former are Biblical Churches, preachers, and teachers. The latter are false churches, false preachers, and false teachers.

Never forget that no one is saved by religiousity. They are not saved by witnessing signs and wonders. They are not saved by being part of a ministry that is lead by a charismatic leader. No, that is just religiosity and it saves no one. The only way a person can be saved is to hear the Gospel preached . This Gospel is the whole Gospel which includes the Law, Sin, the coming of Christ to be our redeemer and advocate, the bloody cross, Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. All are necessary components of the genuine Gospel. The genuine Gospel is confrontational as we see in the video below. A word of caution. About halfway through this video Ryan, the street preacher, is interrupted by a man shouting obscenities which are extremely audible.

Follow this link to a post by my friend Loretta Heiden about her recent experiences in taking part in a street preaching push in the San Francisco Bay area. The video above is part of that push. Did you notice how that young man, Ryan, was accosted and interrupted, but never stopped preaching? I wept through that part. How sad! However, the worldly lost people out there are not our enemies. The enemy of the Church right now is Satan and he is working overtime in the Counterfeit Church to stifle the Gospel by placing ungodly men in the pulpits of those churches. That is why we focus so much here on teaching the truth from God’s Word so that those reading it will learn and then know how to tell the difference between God’s Truth and the world’s truth, which is straight from the mouth of Satan.

Soli Deo Gloria!

  1. Are there 2 kinds of Christians…….yup, the true and the false. Won’t it be interesting to see the ‘people’ at the wedding who aren’t dressed right who think they belong there? It will be a sad day for them for sure. The dutch preacher knows what you and I know! 🙂 Good post Mike.

How did you react about halfway through the second video when that fellow started verbally abusing Ryan and those around him? My first reaction was that I wanted to retaliate. Did you notice that no one did. Ryan just kept preaching.

Yep, the Dutch preacher’s last couple of sermons was a large part of this post. 🙂

  3. Thank you for bearing others burdens Mike. I hope that those who witness this fiery trial will learn from it. When a brother is burdened, we all feel the load. I know that the hireling will flee from the fire when it gets hot, but those who are his are sustained and endure it.

I appreciate the fact that God stiffens our forehead against ungodliness. Those who are not his shrink away and conform to the world. Keep persevering. True discipleship is so visible when things get difficult. We do not contend in vain.

I agree with you wholeheartedly on this post. There is a counterfeit church out there. Of course, we disagree who that is, as I think it is you and Ken and you, no doubt believe it is me. I believe you are the one’s Jesus is referring to throughout the New Testament in His warnings and you–I would imagine–believe it it me. No doubt God will decide between you and I and the youth pastor you quote.

What I believe or you believe is really irrelevant. It is what the Word of God says and it is clear that we are to boldly share the Gospel no matter who squawks and stiffens their neck and is afraid of offending people with truth of the Gospel. Have you read that part Joe?

    amen to these!

Yes, Mike. There are two Christianities! One is not really about Jesus, the other is. One finds the gospel distasteful, the other loves it. One de-emphasises the scriptures, the other submits itself to it. One is embarrassed by the gospel, the other wants to share it. One wants to see the glory of God manifested in power, signs and wonders NOW, the other waits patiently for the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. There’s a parallel universe out there masquerading as the bride of Christ, but it is counterfeit.

  14. Joe,

Well, well and yes I have read that, just last night as I wrote this piece as a matter of fact. I almost put it in. And you know what, I know what it means, do you? Jesus is talking about people who are relying on their religiosity to save them, but who have no faith in Him. They are not trusting our Lord Jesus Christ ALONE for their salvation, but upon their works, their fruit.

By-the-way, since you are defending that fellow who was ashamed of the Gospel, are you as well? You must be since you seem to hate the preaching of it, all of it, not just the high points.

Just for fun, why don’t you write back and tell me what your understanding of the Gospel really is Joe. That would be a lot of fun don’t you think?

  15. Mike,

I’m the youth pastor that you mentioned in your post. Unfortunately the way you interpret my statement is a little off the mark.

Your insinuation that my comment reveals something about the true and false church is really laughable. In it’s context anyone without an agenda could easily discern that I was referring to the fact that Richard made a claim that what Ken said was “slander” the onus was then on Ken to show the ISP how it wasn’t slander.

If you somehow used that as evidence that the church is
going off the rails…well…I guess so be it.

By the way I really liked this article. You and I are of the same mind for the most part. But I would caution you and say that it’s not that people don’t want critique or criticism it’s that people want honest, not emotionally laden, guilt by association, critique. Which unfortunately has been absent from much of the conversation about PD.

    Thanks for your time.

  17. Well Chris,

My point was this. I know what slander is. I also know that there is a mindset in our time that is all about relativism, which is exactly the root behind what I am writing about here. Facts are not up to feelings or individual interpretation. Truth is truth regardless of whether you believe it to be so or not. This relativistic mindset has infected much of what we call the visible church. That has created a free-for-all religious environment that, regardless of how each individual in it interprets it, is focused on pleasing men and not glorifying God. We cannot do both. We can only have one master and if self is it then we are not serving God.

This article was not intended to be an in depth analysis of the PD since I have already done that in many other articles. It was intended to reveal the roots of the trends that the Holy Spirit has been revealing to many of us over the last few years and I was tying it to together with another study on Matthew 24 that some of us here have been going through offline.

  20. The parable of the Progigal son is clear that there are two types of Christan-ites surrounding the father. One is the repentant younger brother that squandered his money on prostitutes — but the Father throws a party at his return.

The other is the “obedient”, religious older brother that does not get why the Father does not owe him something for putting in his time. The older brother was NOT interested in breaking the rules. He was interested in keeping the rules. But he was interested in keeping the rules for ALL the wrong reasons.

Your right Mike when yous said:

That is how we walk the narrow path that leads to Him. The Way to God is not by doing what our flesh wants, but in denying what our flesh wants which is to sin.

In any case, That is not all of the gospel, but it is a fairly good summary of it. Now, here is my point. Shouldn’t those who are bought and have this right relationship be also going through the process of sanctification which is God’s work in our hearts to remove us from sin? You know the answer to that.

Joe, I detect some anger, even bitterness in you. That is not good. It is okay to be angry with righteous indignation, but not if it turns into vilification or vindication. Neither are available options for Christians. Have you read this post?

I, in his last statement, made the mistake of interpreting that as referring to the fellow in the first video above. However, Joe was actually referring to the unnamed Youth Pastor I quoted earlier. I based some of my response to him on that misunderstanding. If you read our comments in light of that it will make more sense because from that perspective it appears that Joe was defending the fellow in the video when he wasn’t. Therefore, I have asked Joe to forgive me for that because the truth, as always, sheds a very different light on things and I thank God for working through this to make the truth clear.

  28. Thank you so much for this post, Mike. I believe you are right in the sense that some “Christians” will in fact go to hell. The Bible is very clear on that point. I don’t know about all your statements, though, because I grew up in charismatic churches which are definitely all about laying down the truth of the Gospel. Maybe I just don’t relate to anything about “seeker-sensitive” churches because I’ve never been a part of one.

Also, I’m not familiar with the arguments against Rick Warren. I read the Purpose Driven Life, and I didn’t really find anything wrong with it. What’s wrong with worship, spiritual family, becoming like Christ, serving God and reaching others with the Gospel?

I really liked that last video. I greatly respect preachers like Ryan who speak the truth of the Gospel, that Jesus came to die to forgive the sin we all have. I really think some Christians group all street preachers in one big bad group. Because many street preachers I’ve seen just seem to call everyone they see a whore or a fag, and I don’t think that conveys the love of Christ in the least.

  34. Mike,

    First time on your site….

I was reading this comment thread and was struck by a comment you made in response to Joe regarding the passage from Matthew on the sheep and goats. You said, “Jesus is talking about people who are relying on their religiosity to save them, but who have no faith in Him. They are not trusting our Lord Jesus Christ ALONE for their salvation, but upon their works, their fruit. ”

As a theologian, I am struck by how backwards you got that passage.

It is clear from scripture that our salvation comes only from faith alone. However our faith is demonstrated by acts of love, which you have identified as “fruit.” Jesus was not saying that those who are rejected lack faith, but that their faith was worthless because it did not produce good deeds to those in need. Both groups had faith, however the first group’s faith was akin to the faith that James speaks of as worthless. A religion that God sees as genuine is one that cares for the fatherless and the widow.

My problem with Ken Silva and others like him is that their religon is much more like those in the first group than those in the second…

    Like

  35. Heath,

No, you are incorrect. You are partially right, but you overlook Matthew 7:23. The reason these are rejected by Christ is because they practice lawlessness which is rebellion against God. They had faith, yes, but it was in a salvation based upon doing things their own way. They do not do the will of the Father which is to trust Christ alone for salvation and obey Him from that point on.

You also make the judgment that “Ken Silva and those like him” are those who are to be rejected. Why? You make the astounding statement that Ken and those like him don’t obey Christ as His slaves or servants. How would you know that Heath? Are you following us around observing how we serve our Lord or are you just making insinuations?

And I am sorry but we will have to disagree on your interpretation of that passage. Matthew 7 doesn’t seem to help your position much either, as it is clear to me even from that passage that fruit is the measuring stick for authentic faith. In fact, from my perspective that passage describes Ken Silva to a T.

  37. Mike,

This truth came very clear to me that there are two Christianities when I was at the Sonshine Music Festival this last month. I did open air and interviews. Some of the most telling interviews were with youth pastors and their youth groups. The stuff that is being taught in most American churches is not the Bible. The largest American churches are full of unregenerate people. The tares among the wheat, and they will leave in protest when the true Gospel is preached.

I wonder what would happen at Mars Hill if Rob Bell quit preaching his mishmash of eastern spirituality and christianity. I wonder what would happen if Doug Pagitt quit offering Yoga on Sunday Mornings in exchange for expository preaching of the Word. I wonder what would happen if Rick Warren would cease and desist from his purpose driven garbage and turn his church into a spirit driven church? I will tell you: someone else would come up with a feel good marketable Christianity and his people would drift over to that person/church. There is only a small remnant that will be saved, the rest will be deceived. I am afraid you have only hit the very tip of the iceberg, friend.

  38. Heath, Ken is my friend and a godly man. You don’t know him at all. And no we’re not to simply let the weeds and wheat grow together. That was a command by God to ANGELS. But, you do know I’m sure that that is a PARABLE. We are instructed in the word to exhort and practice Church discipline. We are to expose those who are wolves in sheep’s clothing so we can warn the flock. Prove me wrong son. I don’t think you can.

You have misread the passage. The measure is actually found in v23 where Jesus says that HE NEVER KNEW THEM. They were not true believers. Your interpretation hints at works based salvation. You did say earlier that we are saved by faith, but we are actually saved BY GRACE through faith and that NOT OF OURSELVES. It is a GIFT from God. Those who are truly saved will do good works and bear good fruit because they ABIDE in CHRIST. (John 15)

  39. We agree, Mike, that authentic faith will lead to works. We also agree that we are saved by grace, which is a free gift of God and not of ourselves. I am not arguing those points.

My point of contention is that those who lack fruit cannot claim to have faith, becuase their lack of fruit is the very proof that they also lack faith. The fruit Jesus points out in his parable are all dealing with social concerns of those in need, not points scored in an “I am a better Christian than you” blogging debate. We will know Christ’s followers by how they love one another. Thus, we really should be spending more effort in loving than in lecturing…

I consider thje “older brother” attitude Christianites in this parable to be the most damaging thing occurring in the Church still today the same as it was in the day of Jesus.

The outter space alien types of Christianites (Rob Bell, etc) tend to be in a different category than this, however. In the day of Jesus this the gnostics may have been this equivalent.
