Who Will Not Inherit the Kingdom of God?

I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. (1 Corinthians 15:50 ESV)

There are only two religions in the entire world. There is genuine Christianity and then every other form of religiosity including humanism. The latter are all opposed to the truth and are part of the rebellion against the sovereignty of God. Genuine Christianity is made up of those who have been redeemed from the slave market of iniquity. This slave market preys on people and keeps them in bondage to the flesh. On the other hand, Genuine Christianity, which is the Church, is spiritual. Those in it are adopted into the family of God. Those alive right now await the completion of their redemption. Those who have already died are with the Lord now. Those who remain are in process. This process is their progressive sanctification, which is the mortification of the deeds of their flesh, which is sin. However, all outside of the Church are in their sins and can only operate in the flesh.

Flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God. This refers to efforts of humans. Salvation comes through God’s work, not Man’s. The best flesh and blood can do is as filthy rags in God’s sight.

But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities. (Isaiah 64:6-7 KJV)

I received a heads up today from Ken Silva, my dear brother in the Lord, about an article he had just posted about Tony Jones. I must admit that I was not shocked about this. In fact, this direction within the emergent movement has been expected. Why? The leadership within it, such as Brian MCLaren and Rob Bell, discounts the Word of God. They handle it as if it has little or no authority. They use it as source material for their sermons and books, but they handle it loosely and make sure that all know that they do not consider it absolute truth. This is deadly because it removes moral issues from the crystal clear, black and white realm and places them into the gray areas of relativism. If you followed that link to Ken’s article and read it then you know what I am referring to.

The Word of God is very clear that flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God. That means that unrepentant sinners are not Christians. When a person is regenerated by God then believes through faith by the grace of God, he or she also repents. This new Christian is a new creation in Christ. The Christian is not perfect, but does seek to live a repentant lifestyle by the grace of God. On the other hand, as Ken’s post showed us, there are plenty of “Christian’ leaders out there who want to open wide the narrow gate and allow the unrepentant into God’s Kingdom. Let us look at a passage that teaches the opposite.

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11 ESV)

The word ‘unrighteous’ in the Greek is ἄδικος or adikos. In classical Greek, this word is used to describe the wicked. In this context, it describes those who fall short of the righteousness required by God’s Law. It is also used in the New Testament to describe those who have not had Christ’s righteousness imputed to their account. In other words, this is describing the unsaved, those who still in their sins. Not one of them will inherit the Kingdom of God. The word ‘inherit’ in the Greek is κληρονομέω or klēronomeō. This word describes the act of obtaining by inheritance. To inherit something means being part of the family that owns what is obtained. Those who will not inherit it are not part of that family. God has adopted all genuine Christians into His family as Christ’s brethren (Ephesians 1). This verb, κληρονομέω, is in future tense so refers to punctiliar action rather than linear action. This inheritance will take place in the future once and it is done.

Then Paul says, “Do not be deceived…” The word deceived in the Greek is πλανάω or planaō. This present imperative verb in active voice is a command to avoid ‘going out of the way’ continually. We must always be vigilant to not believe the lie. What lie? The lie is that the unrighteous are going to inherit the Kingdom of God just like the elect. As long as they are religious and sincere then their sins do not matter. What sins? Paul gives us a sampling in vv9-10. He starts with those who practice ‘sexual immorality.’ This is the Greek word πόρνος or pornos. This is where we get our English word pornography. This refers to all who indulge in fornication particularly unmarried persons. The next group mentioned is ‘idolaters.’ This is referring those who worship any false god or follow any false religious system. This is all who are not part of the true Church. These are the ones who have not had Christ’s righteousness imputed to their account.

The next group is adulterers. These married persons indulge in sexual acts outside of marriage. The next group is ‘men who practice homosexuality.’ The King James translates this as “nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind.” These terms refer to those who exchange and corrupt normal male-female sexual roles and relations. This would include transvestism, sex changes, and other gender perversions (Genesis 1:27; Deuteronomy 22:5). The ‘abusers of themselves with mankind’ are also called sodomites in the NKJV. Sodomites are so called because the sin of male-male sex dominated the city of Sodom (Genesis 18:20; 19:4,5). This perversion is always condemned in Scripture in all its forms (Leviticus 18:22; 20:13; Romans 1:26,27; 1 Timothy 1:10).

The next two groups are thieves and the greedy. Both groups are guilty of the same basic sin of greed. The covetous desire what belongs to others. Thieves actually take it. The next group is revilers. These attempt to destroy others with their words. They would include the predators who seek to demolish other people reputations with their deceit, for whatever motive. Christians are not to do that any more than stealing or committing sexual sins like those above. That sure sheds some light into the actions of certain professing Christians who do this very thing to other Christians by defaming them and saying all sorts of untrue evil things about them to the world on the Internet doesn’t it? The last group mentioned is swindlers. The NKJV translates this word as ‘extortioners.’ This would include swindlers and embezzlers. They steal indirectly by taking unfair advantage of others for their own financial gain. Think of identity theft.

Paul tells us that no one who is identified as living an unrepentant lifestyle marked by any of these sins will inherit the Kingdom of God. We do know, though, that many of us who are Christians have many of these things in our past. What about that? The key to this passage for us is v11, which says, “And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” Every Christian is equally an ex-sinner. Christ came to save sinners. Many Christians used to have those patterns of sinful life by falling into those old sins again even after professing faith in Christ. This passage is a reminder to them that if they went all the way back to live as they used to, they were proving that their profession of faith was bogus and they were not going to inherit eternal salvation. This deconversion would prove they were never saved (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Genuine Christians were washed unto a new life in Christ through spiritual cleansing and regeneration (John 3:3-8; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Ephesians 2:10; Titus 3:5). They were sanctified. Sanctification is the act of God of removing a saved person from sin into a progressively more holy life over time. This results in new behavior, which a transformed life always produces. The dominance of sin is broken and replaced by a new pattern of obedience and holiness. This is not perfection. Instead, we must look at it as a new direction unto being conformed unto the image of Christ. They were justified. This is referring to God’s declaration of righteousness to all who believe and receive Christ. This results in a right standing before God because Christ’s righteousness is imputed unto their account. They are now clothed in Christ’s righteousness. This is possible because genuine Christian’s sins were put to Christ’s account. He suffered and died for them (Romans 3:26; 4:22-25; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Philippians 3:8,9; 1 Peter 3:18). The Holy Spirit is the agent of salvation’s transformation (John 3:3-5).

Now, what does this say about those who are working to deceive Christians into validating the acceptability of including unrepentant sinners into the Body of Christ? Paul warns us to be continually alert to this deception. Those proposing this are attempting to call what is evil good. This is a lie and we must not agree to it. We must warn our brethren and try to alert the followers of these people to the error. We cannot use the world’s tactics in this. No, we must pray and tell the truth.

  4. The devil tatoos on pastors’ arms are a prime example of how men will call evil good. We can see billboards, advertising, clothing, and motorcycles with images of skulls, demons, harlots in fish net panty hose, and dragons everywhere. The image of a skeleton or a phantom on fire riding a Harley is one that I hate the most.
    These images may seem “cool” to Emergents, but they are just prime examples of bad fruit in a decadent society. I personally find it offensive that our culture has welcomed this pirate mentality. Pirates love chaos, death, and darkness. Images of evil are something htat they are not ashamed to flaunt.
    The Emergent Church is just another social club, where men can love the world and find ways to make God work for them instead them repenting and submitting to God. God is not in the Emergent Church. Holiness is offensive to them.

  6. I went through a time of “backsliding” as we like to say. I did not go all the way back to my old lifestyle but I did engage periodically in activities that were certainly sinful and had become lukewarm in my relationship with the Father.

    I remember one day being struck in my heart by the realization that I was purposefully living in direct and willfull rebellion to my God and that in essence I was spitting on the cross of Christ and what He had done for me.

    I became so filled with conviction and holy fear I wanted to scream, cry and run all at the same time. It broke my heart and I repented.

    You are right when you say that the Christian life is about the process of sanctification. I am so very grateful that part of that process is sometimes when my merciful God breaks me and brings me back to His heart.

    I never want to stray from Him again.

  7. One of the most critical acts of God in our sanctification, is how he makes us dead to the world. If he intends to crucify the old man, he will set his face against us for some time making the straight paths crooked. By setting his face against us for some time, he reveals his severity and his sovereignty. Without this unpleasant work, we are still alive to the world and ruled by the wicked nature that we were born with. In the Emergent Church, the word holiness indicates a ‘religious’ act which men may glory in, thus having attained ‘brownie points’ with some strange unitarian being. The Emergent Jesus is a passive hippy who loves everybody and never gets angry about anything…. A happy go lucky ho hum effiminate Jew with long hair wearing sandals and a 1960’s tie dyed T-shirt. These weak and effiminate images are not the Jesus of the Bible.

    God does not always have an open ear with the unrepentant sinner. Even when dealing with his own, he will bruise them or wound them if need be. David praises him for it in the Psalms. God is slow to anger with some, but quick and severe with others. In dealing with the unregenerate, he can and will expedite his judgment(s) at the time of his choosing. In regard to the regenerate, he is patient and enduring but nonetheless immutable and unchallengeable when it comes to dealing with us.
    Mike, you wrote about holiness, but sadly a large number of baby Christians believes this means that only the red letters of the Bible apply to them while the severity in OT does not apply to the cross. Today’s Emergent politically correct Jesus is too effiminate for the Bible. I just don’t see any similarities at all! The command to be holy is not an option is it?

    Who can shackle the Lord with handcuffs? When he begins pruning, will any of us have him detained and thrown in jail? Who is foolish enough to say to him, “Umm.. God. What do you think that you are doing?”


  8. It is a tragic misconception to think that our justification means that God will never set his face against us for some time, even after his Spirit indwells us. If the Lord intends to purge away some dross, he will do this for as long as he needs to. During that time, we can easily find ourselves asking the familiar question, “What did I do wrong?”

    I remember some of my trials and all of the doubt, bitterness, resentment, and anger that I had. It seemed like God had become my enemy. As if he had drawn a bow and made his arrows just for me. But as I read what the OT prophets experienced, it reminded me that the fires of tribulation are just that way. God seems like an enemy when he chastens us. We just have to remind ourselves that he is a mighty refiner who knows exactly what he is doing.

    I hate the purification process sometimes. Some of it is easier than the rest. Some valleys are deeper and darker and longer (and dryer) than some of the others. When we have dry seasons, is there anyone who can call the National Guard to come and seize him? It isn’t like we can usurp God and make him do things our way is it?

  10. The Bible reveal God’s terrors (judgments) just as much as his mercies. I just don’t see how we can know him if we don’t accept both. I think holiness comes when he shows us how to respect his severity. He is patient with some, but not with all.

In those times of trials and tribulations it is hard sometimes to see God working, but I am realizing more and more that He is just drawing me closer and closer to Him, He is making me realize just how much I need Him, He is revealing to me how much more I need Him by using these times to mold me into His image. Lord, let me know more of myself and of thee.
