Those Who Practice Homosexuality Will Not Inherit The Kingdom of God

by Mike Ratliff

For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. (Romans 1:26-27 ESV)

My friend Ken Silva told me this evening that the Postmodern paradigm sees, “… affirming gays as liberating them from their oppressors…” This postmodern mindset is deeply engrained in what is known as Emergence Christianity. This is why its leaders nearly all line up and stand with their “gay friends” in support and do not attempt to get them to repent of their sin because they actually believe that a person can be a practicing homosexual and a good Christian at the same time. Well, actually, I do understand what they are saying and I do understand the underlying compassion that leads them to this, but there comes a point as Christians when we cannot cross certain lines. What God calls sin is sin regardless of how we or anyone else “feels” about it. What does God’s word say about those who will not inherit the kingdom of God?

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11 ESV)

(1 Corinthians 6:9-11 GNT)

The word translated in v9 as unrighteous, ἄδικοι, refers to those whose behavior is indistinguishable from the unbelieving world and that these people will not be among the saints, those who inherit the kingdom of God, at all. What does it mean to “inherit the Kingdom of God?” This is describing what happens when our Lord’s Kingdom comes into fulfillment and those who are truly His will rule and reign with Him for eternity. Those who do not belong to Him, the ἄδικοι, will only inherit the wrath of God and eternal damnation in Hell. What are the markers of these ἄδικοι? Paul warns us in v9, “Do not be deceived” or μὴ πλανᾶσθε. Where have we seen that? We have been looking at this very thing in our last several posts. When we see this statement or command we must take notice immediately because what we are about to read is a statement that the world and false teachers and preachers have always and will always teach the exact opposite of because to teach the truth here would overload their man-fearing sensibilities. The world hates this message and so when you encounter a preacher who hedges on any part of what I am about to write here then you are dealing with a compromiser and you should run from him or her as fast as you can.

What sort of behavior marks the unrighteous that Paul is referring to here? They are the sexually immoral (πόρνοι), which refers to those who practice any kind of illegitimate sexual intercourse; the idolators (εἰδωλολάτραι), which is describing the placing of anything or anyone before God as the object of allegiance and devotion; the adulterers (μοιχοὶ) , which includes not only the actual act of sexual adultery, but also committing the lust in the heart after one who is not ones spouse; the next one in most modern translations is ‘men who practice homosexuality,’ but in the Greek it is two separate terms, (μαλακοὶ and ἀρσενοκοῖται), which literally translates as “soft ones” and “male bed partners.” In any case, these two Greek terms translated by this phrase refer to the passive and active partners in consensual homosexual acts; the thieves (κλέπται), which is exactly what it says it is. These are people who steal what is not theirs by fraud and in secret; the greedy (πλεονέκται), which refers to those who hold a desire for gain so high that it becomes avarice; the drunkards (μέθυσοι), which is exactly what it says it is; the revilers (λοίδοροι), which describes one who is abusive to others, a blackguard or railer; lastly the swindlers (ἅρπαγες), which describes those who are rapacious or ravening. They raid or plunder others. Think of those who use guile and deceit to swindle and deceive.

What I find interesting is that what I just shared with you is resented by so many, especially that part about homosexuality as if it is a socially protected group with special rights and we cannot call sin what God calls it, which is sin. In any case, those who resent it obviously overlook v11, “And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” After I was saved I used to read this passage and simply rejoice because I knew that it no longer mattered what sin had enslaved me before God had mercy on me. At my salvation, He washed me, sanctified me and justified me in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ by the Spirit of our God! If you are in Christ then so were you.

However, these so-called Christian leaders trying to justify people in their sin for whatever motive are going against what God’s Word clearly says and so are proving that they themselves are not of God either.

Soli Deo Gloria!

  1. Hi Mike 😀
An honest, Biblical look into the whole passage with Christ’s love and courage shining through you. Praise Him!

You are so correct, v11, “And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” That states very clearly that ONLY because of the finished work of Christ on the cross and our total surrender and submission to Him in that we give up our right to ourselves, we are not what we once were, we are now completely renewed in Him in every sense of the word, we have become Doulos and all by His Spirit, in the Name of Jesus. All glory therefore to Him.

For some to go on deceiving that our most Holy God is “OK” with any of the previously mentioned list of people is heinous to Him, regardless of which one/s they want to protect. Man makes the distinction in degrees of sin according to accepted societal norms. Here they are all bundled in the same passage, with the same result at the end of it. It is deadly serious.

It is totally preposterous that we as human beings can even think that we can ‘wink’ at God in any matter that He has laid out clearly, I mean, who do we think we are? The only response to Him ought to be a broken heart and a contrite spirit as we are shown the error of our ways. If this is lacking, we have no life of Him in us.

God can never and will never change His mind over these things, no matter what man tries to explain away in justification for his behaviour and state of heart. Our God, He is a Holy and Righteous God.

Jesus did not die in vain.

Bless you as you continue in whatever the Lord gives you to share.

  2. I have debated repeatedly with unrepentant homosexuals who twist God’s word, who claim Sodom and Gomorrah weren’t destroyed because of homosexuality, who say the Old Testament doesn’t forbid homosexuality, and claim the word homosexuality isn’t even in the Bible. The list goes on and on and on…I have shared my testimony on how God freed me from this perversion all across the blogsophere {http://iamhis-lyn.blogspot.com/2008/11/my-testimony-up-until-fall-of-2003-i.html}; as shameful as it is, I know God will get glory from what He’s done in my own life. This is why I plead with others caught in this bondage to cry out for mercy, however, when the visible church starts agreeing with their perversion and labels it ‘acceptable’, you can see how dangerous the deception becomes. There comes a point when the heart becomes so hardened and depraved by grievous sins such as homosexuality that the Gospel no longer penetrates, the Christ-rejecting sinner is turned over by God to his/her sins with no hope.

I often remind others of this passage, when asked what will be the sign of His coming and of the end of the age, Christ responded, ‘And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.’ There’s that word again!! Deception! There is no greater danger than deception and yet, it’s sweeping across the globe like a tidal wave.

We simply cannot sugarcoat sin, or excuse it. What the Lord has called sin is indeed sin, regardless of how many may say, ‘Did God really say….’

    Good post Mike!

  3. Mike,

I do not believe a person who professes Christ should practice sin. Having said that, we all do in some way. And that section in Corinthians also deliniates idolatry and greed. I contend that nationalism and patriotism is blatant idolatry, and that many if not most western believers use money in a self serving way which is greed.

My point is that I do not believe in welcoming practicing homosexuals into the local fellowship and allowing their behavior, however I cannot completely discount the possibility that some actually do believe on Christ and renmain deceived about their situation, similar to the way many western believers are deceived about other areas of their lives.

The teachings of Christ are clear, but we choose to obey some and not others. Jesus said we should not save up money on this earth to spend on ourselves and yet we all do. This is where the paradox of grace and works intersect and where God is the only one who knows with any certainty.

  4. Yes Rick, all of us still sin. However, the truly regenerate Christian will not live a life that is marked by the things Paul listed in that passage. They will not be thieves or adulterers, et cetera. That also includes homosexuals. The key to understanding what Paul was talking about her is that he is making a contrast. He is saying people who do these things, live this way, et cetera, will not inherit the Kingdom of God BUT so were some of you. Some of you used to live this way, but look what God has done for you! That is the key. That is what needs to be preached instead of trying to be inclusive of people who won’t or can’t repent of sin, this needs to be made clear. Genuine Christians have a salvation of repentance and the ability to mortify sin. I never said that some sins are EASY to mortify. Some take years of hard sanctifying work with God to kill, maybe even a lifetime, but no real Christian can live at peace with these things in their lives.

  5. I don’t want to debate really into the issue here, but Mike, I think any evangelical church preaching what Rick Frueh supports is often the first step of doctrinal downward spiral. Twenty years ago, the American NAE and Christianity Today was preaching exactly what Rick has just preached. And today, they are now pretty close to V. Gene Robinson from the Episcopal Church or Jim Wallis of Sojourners type on the issue of homosexuality.

  6. Is piling up tens of thousands of dollars in a 401k in direct violation of the Sermon on the Mount sin? Is pledging allegiance to a flag in an act of idolatry sin? That is my point, all of us sin ignorantly and with knowledge. Grace should not be an excuse to sin, but it must be the redemptive element in our sin.

  7. Mike,

Years ago those examples would have made sense. The slippery slope model is applicabkle there as well. Many, if not most, western believers practice hedonism while millions starve and die. How can that be Biblical and right?

And I do acknowledge Joel’s legitimate warning beacuse many who said what I say eventually accomodate and accept sinful behavior.

  8. Amen Joel!!
How can anyone try and make light of sexual sin? To compare pledging allegiance to the abomination of homosexuality just does NOT make good sense, nor does it offer a solid biblically based argument. That’s how post modernists argue though, not from the solid truth of God’s word, but from hypothetical situations that do nothing more than try and confuse the believer into arguing from ‘another angle’. It sounds eerily like ‘did God really say?’

  9. Rick, I do understand what you meant and those things would be sinful IF the motives were idolatrous, but not if they weren’t. I am a loyal US Navy Veteran. I do not regret my military service and I have no problem with patriotism, but those things do not EVER displace my love and devotion to God so no, when I pledge allegiance to the flag of the US I am not committing idolatry. I know some people who are the opposite, but not in my case.

Your statement about western believers practicing hedonism while millions starve and die, hmmm, that is heartbreaking, but is going to work everyday to support my family and planning for retirement and helping my children with their children hedonism? I don’t think so. I give to the local rescue missions in my area as much as I can and as God leads. The rest of your statement sounds a bit like the Missional lie to me.

  10. Hi Mike,

This was very good. My husband and I read it last night and got to thinking about how the sin of sexual immorality is a sin against one’s own body and singled out in a different category in contrast to all other sins that are committed outside the body (1 Cor 6:18).

1 Cor 6:11 speaks of those who used to practice such things as being washed, sanctified and justified in Christ’s name and by the Holy Spirit. We become brand new creatures when we are truly born again and the old has passed away and all has become new. We have new desires to obey Him because He is our Lord and we revere and fear Him.

“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” Luke 5:46

    God bless, Mike.

  11. Thank you Diane, and, yes, you and your husband are exactly right. Any attempt to justify these sins when they are so explicitly defined for us here in God’s Word are sure signs of unbelief though those doing so would be very quick to deny that that is the case to be sure. However, never forget the warning at the beginning of this passage, “Do not be deceived!” Deception is something that feeds off of a lie, but it is something that people believe because they want to believe it for some reason. Those who are deceived are spiritually blinded by this and so we see them defend those in unrepentance, but, of course, never from scripture because that is impossible except by taking things out context.

  12. For those who are not in Christ and are homosexual, Christians must be careful not to make homosexuality “the worst possible sin.” That attitude will only make the homosexual close his ears and run the other way. If we simply preach the Gospel message, beginning with the fact that God hates sin, then we avoid alienating a specific group of people. God is no respecter of persons. We have compassion for the lost, for those who haven’t heard the Gospel.

On the other hand, if a person professes to be a Christian, yet embraces a homosexual lifestyle, we must take a different approach. First, we point out the Biblical commands against homosexuality (or whatever sin the person is committing). If the person does not repent, we must take the next step of withholding fellowship (1 Corinthians 5). There is no room for “compassion” when one claims Christ yet rejects His word outright. The truly compassionate thing to do is to speak the truth and make it clear that embracing such a lifestyle leads to eternal death. If the person repents, we welcome him back in fellowship. If he does not repent, we know that he never was saved.

The Bible makes these things very clear. These days, though, the rhetoric has muddied the waters. It’s understandable that the lost embrace sin and have tolerance for such things as homosexuality. It is unthinkable that professing Christians spew the same “compassionate” garbage.

  13. Lyn,
I have read your testimony. Praise the Lord Jesus Christ he STILL delivers from sin!!!

THESIS: “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11 ESV)

ANTITHESIS: Man says, ” 1. All christians commit sin in some way. 2. Homosexuality, while being a sin, is not any worse than any other sin. 3. If we say that homosexuals cannot inherit the kingdom of God we are being hypocritical. 4. Sin CANNOT actually be defined by man because, people are ignorant and IN SIN, so we have to leave the judgment of sin up to the Lord, only he knows if someone is saved and commiting sin or they are committing sin which God’s grace covers…….
Result we have been drawn into a “dialogue” about a man’s opinions….. HELLO DIAPRAX!!!!

  14. Amen Stella! Very well reasoned and said my sister! I am rejoicing that so many are seeing this. As we stand firm the ‘Synthesis’ is stopped because the Diaprax process is stopped because there is no dialogue. Yes, many will call us mean-spirited and judgmental and close-minded and legalistic, but it does not matter. God says this very clearly so this is truth and we do not move from it.

  15. Yes! you are right Mike, STAND FIRM! ALL we can do is uphold God’s word, it does no good to dialogue…….it goes on forever….. or it leads to SIN-thesis! Lord help us be faithful! Thank-you for your stand!

  17. And we can derail their Sin-thesis with the Word of God like this: “1. All christians commit sin in some way. 2. Homosexuality, while being a sin, is not any worse than any other sin.”

Wrong; God says, “Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.” (1 Corinthians 6:18)
