Using John 10:30 Accurately

by Mike Ratliff

(John 10:30 NA27)

“I and the Father, we are one.” (10:30 Possessing the Treasure New Testament V1)

In light of continued push by those whose main desire is other than obeying God in the proclamation and upholding of his truth, The Word of God, as The One and only Truth, through their own personal agendas, we must not cave in to what may look popular to do. No, the stand we take to defend God’s Word, his doctrines, as primary to the well being of the Church may indeed be an unpopular one in our time, but we obey God not men. For example, the Doctrine of the Trinity is a continual target and often looked upon as secondary to fellowship between professing Christians. In this post I will simply translate John 10:22-30 then below that will be a video by Dr. James White in which he discusses the proper exegesis is this text.

(John 10:22-30 NA27)

22 There was at that time the Feast of Dedication among those in Jerusalem. It was winter 23 and Jesus was walking in the Temple on the porch of Solomon. 24 Then the Jews encircled him and were saying to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense?” If you are the Christ, tell us openly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “I told you and you did not believe works which I do in the name of My Father. These testify about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not of my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me 28 and I give to them eternal life into the age and they will never perish and no one is able to snatch any one of them out of my hand. 29 My Father who has given them to me is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch any out of the hand of the Father. 30 I and the Father, we are one.” (John 10:22-30 Possessing the Treasure New Testament V1)

  1. Amen “I and the Father (WE) are one”. Beautiful picture of the true perfect unity between the Father and the Son. I was thinking about when Mr White was talking about how Jesus only or oneness advocates try and separate Jesus Flesh(physical body) with his deity spiritual side—I think I said that right-correct me if you will, BUT he was saying how they try and separate that verse meaning Jesus was talking about himself in different modes.. That’s just flat out denying the essential truth found in Scripture of plurality in the One true God.

Jesus is still in his body and will be for all eternity and that verse your Pastor shared in the other post about how Jesus had to go so that the Holy Spirit could come because Jesus being in a Physical body cannot be everywhere but the Holy Spirit can. How in the world can you reconcile different modes? All Jesus had to do was change his mode if modalism were true –not LEAVE….Ontop of that since the Holy Spirit lives IN true believers and Jesus is forever in his glorified physical body he can’t indwell us and be both.. pure twaddle on their parts..

I thought about John 8:13-18 and this just blows modalism to pieces

The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.” 14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.
17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid.
18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”

Now, if modalism were true then Jesus is being deceitful and lying here.

  2. Linda, you said, “…since the Holy Spirit lives IN true believers and Jesus is forever in his glorified physical body he can’t indwell us and be both…”

If I am reading your words as you intended them, then perhaps you have misspoken here or you typed something you didn’t mean to type? I don’t know…I don’t want to put words in your mouth.
If you meant what you typed, then perhaps you forgot these verses:

“In that day you shall know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.” John 14:20

“Abide in me, and I in you.” John 15:4

“But you are not in the flesh, but in the spirit if so be that the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if any man has not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His. And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He that raised up Christ Jesus from the dead shall quicken also your mortal bodies through His Spirit that dwells in you.” Romans 8:9-11

“To whom God was pleased to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Colossians 1:27

I think I know the argument you were trying to make, but I’m not sure that was the way to make it. From what I see in Scripture, the Spirit of Christ indwells us, Christ indwells us, His word indwells us, His peace lives in us…plus, the Holy Spirit indwells us and has sealed us.
