The History Channel’s Bible Miniseries Mishandling of God’s Word

by Mike Ratliff

2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2 NASB)

Back on February 14th my wife and I went to see a movie at a local theater. It was Lincoln, which I have wanted to see for some time since I have been reading Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book Team of Rivals upon which the movie is partially based. The book is history written based upon actual letters and diaries and records written by the people Goodwin wrote about in her book, however, in the movie, artistic license was obviously taken in order to dramatize certain things. Certain facts were made up and others were left out or changed in order “to fit the movie story line” and tell the story that Stephen Spielberg wanted to tell. We got to the theater early enough so that we had to sit through nearly 30 minutes of previews and specials before our movie actually started. One of those specials that were previewed was the upcoming History Channel’s miniseries “The Bible.”

It was obvious from the action scenes they showed that the focus of all that was not to display what God’s Word had to say about what was going on through, let’s say, Noah and his family being on the Ark as the world was flooded, but instead, upon their ordeal and what they did to overcome it. I already conceived in my mind as I watched those scenes that whoever had put those things together had a particular agenda and they were going to take God’s Truth, His Word, and use it like modeling clay or silly putty to form it into something else, to edit it, to make it into a tool that they could use for their own purposes.

The scene that sealed this for me was in Peter’s boat after Jesus had him catch all those fish after he had fished all night and caught nothing. The stuff that went on in that scene is found nowhere in Scripture. Instead of Peter saying, “Depart from me Lord for I am a sinful man!” he asked Jesus what he is going to do if he follows him. Jesus replied, “Change the world!” Here is the actual passage from Luke 5.

1Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret; 2and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. 3 And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the people from the boat. 4 When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.” 6 When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break; 7so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!” 9 For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken; 10and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men.” (Luke 5:1-10 NASB)

My wife and I looked at each other after the movie version and both us just shuddered. At that time I still did not know who was behind this, but this week some friends sent me the names of the producers and “theologians” responsible for this farce. The following is from their own website:

Is The Bible miniseries on the History Channel theologically accurate/correct/factual and based on biblical scripture?

  • The Bible is a docu-drama based on the stories in The Bible. As with any dramatization, some stories and timelines were altered to create a moving story that fit the 10 hour time frame.
  • Mark Burnett and Roma Downey did consult a team of advisers while writing and filming the miniseries. This team includes: Rick Warren – Pastor, Saddleback, Joel Osteen – Pastor, Lakewood Church, Erwin McManus – Pastor, Mosaic, Jim Daly – Focus on the Family, Sam Rodriguez – National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, Paul Eshleman – Campus Crusade for Christ, Bobby Gruenewald – YouVersion Bible, Brad Lomenick – Catalyst, Leith Anderson – National Association of Evangelicals, Frank Wright – National Religious Broadcasters, Tom Peterson – Catholics Come Home, Geoff Tunnicliffe – World Evangelical Alliance, Gabe Lyons – Q, Luis Palau, George Wood – Assemblies of God, Craig Groeschel – Life Church, Denny Rydberg – Young Life, Andrew Benton – Pepperdine University

The Bible miniseries is based on the (NIV) New International Version and the (NRS) New Revised Standard Version of the Bible.

Roma Downey was formerly on the television series Touched by an Angel. She is Roman Catholic. I have written several times on this blog about the questionable theology of Erwin McManus. We know about Rick Warren and Joel Osteen and how they mishandle Scripture for their own purposes.

My brethren, as this miniseries takes off you are going to hear a lot of good things about it from professing Christians who you would think should know better. What we should be concerned about are those who really do know better who say nothing.

Soli Deo Gloria!

  1. Roma Downey is openly new age: “Roma also attends the University of Santa Monica, a private graduate school founded by New Age spiritual and self-help guru John-Roger, and will graduate with a master’s degree in spiritual psychology in June.

‘As someone who has been on a spiritual journey for many years, it seems a natural extension of that work,’ says the lady still seen in Hallmark Channel reruns as angel Monica. She notes, ‘The skills I’m learning will ultimately qualify me to be a therapist’ — not that she has plans to start a practice anytime soon. ‘It’s really so interesting to learn about human behavior.’

    And other matters.

Says Roma, who lives in Malibu, ‘My kids go to school about a 40-minute drive away. I’m open to the group’s opinion about what we listen to on the way there. On the way back, I get my own selections — books on tape by Eckhart Tolle, Tony Robbins…My husband says I’m so self-realized I’m practically levitating.’”

  2. Mike, I’m so thankful that you didn’t suggest we watch this evil program. Some suggest Christians watch it and then discuss it. What? First we bemoan the lack of biblical knowledge in the church and then suggest somebody take 10 hours of their life to watch this. Wouldn’t it be better to just read the scriptures? We know they are going to twist, add to and take from, the word of God. For some people, the visualized error is going to stick with them long after the show is over. Why risk it?

  3. I agree with taking caution when/if you watch the Bible mini series. Any media presentation of the Bible done by Hollywood’s standards is something that needs to be viewed with caution. However, I would use that same caution no matter who produced, or directed it.
What I find interesting about your article is that you are cautious about this series but say nothing about not watching a movie where God is being blasphemed.
Eighteen times, the movie Lincoln, reduces God’s name down to a curse word. It’s amazing that we bash one media, but turn a blind eye to the others.

I know you may get upset at what I’ve written, but I’m simply pointing out an apparent double standard I see.

  4. I saw the ‘change the world’ clip on the promos. I found out the same information regarding who was behind it. Not interested. Really, it is hard to take seriously a channel that talks about millions and billions of years for the age of the earth. My recommendation, people should skip the artistic, story-telling revisionism or license and actually read Holy Scripture.

  5. Thanks for this article. As we all know from Matthew 7 there are two paths; the broad and the narrow. We also know there is only one path to our Heavenly Father (the narrow path) and that is through the Lord Jesus Christ, as we are told in John 14:6. Today we have church buildings filled with folks who have been and will continue to be deceived because they spend no time in the Bible and really do not know if what they hear from the pulpit on Sunday is truth, partial truth (truth mixed with a lie which equals a lie) or the Biblical truth. My perception is that the majority do not really care. I would also add that i believe many who do make the effort to look into the Scripture do so subjectively rather than objectively. God’s Word says what it says. If we initially do not understand continue to study. As the Bereans search the Scriptures. Ultimately, by the power of the Holy Spirit, they will reveal their truth. Now back to History Channels The Bible, just like many today it manipulates Gods Word turning the Truth into a lie (Romans 1:25). When I saw the preview of “Jesus” telling Peter they would “…change the world…” I understood that this series will be of not benefit to those who truly know the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Thanks again for your fight bring forth the Truth to a relativistic world.

  6. God help us…oh…wait a minute…HE IS! Thanks be to God for allowing this horrible movie to show so that we can spark up conversations, CORRECT its damnable heresies, and preach the REAL Gospel message. This mess of a mini-series will die along with all the other misrepresentations of Our Lord Jesus Christ, but only the Word of God shall endure forever!

  7. Julie, right, no I would not suggest anyone watch it unless it is done as some of us often do in researching heresy, we have to examine what is said in order to address it. However, I would never suggest to anyone that this miniseries could be used as the basis for discussion of God’s Truth.

  8. Joseph, I never suggested to you or anyone else that they should go see Lincoln because that is not what this article was about. However, since you mentioned it, I thought the use of profanity in the movie was out of bounds and, in fact, the book I am reading upon which the movie was supposedly based portrays Lincoln as a man who never used profanity at any time nor did he drink or smoke or use tobacco in any form. Most of the men who made up his cabinet were fine men as well, but the movie portrays them like the politicians that we are used to in our time. I found that quite sad. However, this is all I will mention about that because that is not what this article is about and you should have recognized that before taking your cheap shot.

  9. Hubert, after posting this I shared it with my son-in-law and how some find it risky to do this sort of thing. I was very surprised that he totally agreed with me and said that not all Christians are as vocal or as ready to speak out as others, but that does not mean they are blindly following after Rick Warren either. I appreciated that. We also discussed the push to force everyone to respect other peoples take on faith and Christianity, etc. He said that those he knew that were younger than him were the ones clinging to that nonsense, those who have matured and have families and responsibilities have for the most part left that gunk behind, especially if they have genuine faith and a solid Christian church to support them.

  11. As I said in my comment, I am trying pointing out a double standard I see in Christianity. I am not trying to take a cheap shot, nor am I trying to offend you.

The problem with media goes way further than the Bible mini series. You said you were sad over the language used in Lincoln. But did you leave when you heard it? We want to be strong vocal Christians but at the same time, we sit back and allow our God to be blasphemed, and we put up with it because we really want to see something. We want to be entertained. We are being vocal, only where it’s easy. We need to stand up against all of it. We should be offended by any media, not just what we have no problem avoiding, and show it by not standing for it. To me, the movie Lincoln is no better then the blasphemous skit on SNL. They both blaspheme God.

I’m not saying I’m a better Christian than you, or anyone else because I’m not. That was not the point of my comment. I’m sorry that it offended you. Please accept my apology. I hope I have cleared things up a little.

  13. The greatest danger we have in the church today is WE CALL PEOPLE CHRISTIANS WHO ARE NOT CHRISTIANS.
    Jesus said, “Matthew 5:8
Blessed are the pure in heart,
    For they shall see God.

    Pure means UNMIXED.

    Luke warm is not Christian.
    Carnal is not Christian.
THE BACKSLIDDEN ARE HEADED FOR DESTRUCTION.

Only those who are hearing His voice and following Him are Christians.

Only those who are ACTUALLY DOING HIS WILL ARE ENTERING THE KINGDOM OF GOD.

We need to stop calling people christians who once believed, but now do not.

We need to stop calling people christians who live just like the word and are not changed.

We need to stop calling people christians who are not now doing the will of God.

The modern church has redefined what a Christian is!

More and more we see that the whole world is under the sway of the evil one, and that those jesus franchises (95% of all churches) are not a broken system, they are another’s system…
I know it’s hard get our heads around this truth, but that’s because most have a vested interest in not seeing it! plus there is a pride issue in admitting we were wrong to even attempt to fight the error from inside these corporations in the first place.

  16. Mickey, that’s right and that is why we should not ever try to mix the Christian message with the ways of the World. Oh wait, isn’t that what Rick Warren and company do for a living?

  17. I’ve watched extended previews of it Kim that are not available on TV. It is comparable to taking a man-centered version of the Bible and watering it down even further to make it entertainment. I believe the Bible calls that removing the offense of the Cross since the purpose of our Lord’s incarnation, which is the Atonement, is totally submerged into the “Change the World” view that Rick Warren and those who emulate him teach. Paul rejoiced when others preached Christ, but that’s not what this is since the gospel they preach is “another gospel” and the Jesus they preach is “another Jesus.”

  20. Mike, I really enjoyed reading this. Thank you for taking the time to write it. When someone recommended the movie to me, I questioned whether or not it would be authentic. Then I saw the promo and heard the line, “Change the world.” I knew then that this would be like any other “historic” documentary/movie that The History Channel airs ~~ revisionist history. Roma and Mark were at Rick Warren’s church yesterday morning promoting their film according to a Facebook friend of my daughter’s. That says it all.

Regarding Joseph Veseli’s remarks, I didn’t receive his comment as a “cheap shot,” but one of like-mind to where all Believes should be. We should not be supporting Hollywood with our money, even one movie. Twenty-five years ago my husband and I walked out of one movie because of using God’s name in vain. We’ve never been to a movie since.

I worked in the movie industry, as a true Believer in Christ, for almost 30 years. It was my mission field. After seeing what I saw from the “inside,” they will never get any of my support for their liberal beliefs and anti-Christian causes.

  21. Out of curiosity (as I have been waiting months for tonight’t premiere) other than the example you have given, what else have they dramatized for effect for the show? The reason I ask is because the Bible was writtten by man and SOME things (such as certain dialog) may not be completely accurate. Also, the Bible has been translated into several languages from several languages. So is is possible that the message is there, just not word for word from scripture?

    Like

  22. No Diana. What you are using is the same argumenets the liberals use to take away the authority of scripture. God used men to write the Bible, but he inspired what we have in the original languages hence the need for scholars to study the Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek manuscripts. It is by doing this that we see that there are indeed spurious copies out there, but we have huge numbers of accurate copies that are not corrupt and that is from where we get our Bible. The textual variants that do exist that I have seen and have studied do not affect doctrine in any way nor do they allow for this corruption that is going on in this “miniseries.”

  23. Healthy skepticism is a good thing and I appreciate your desire to see scripture accurately portrayed in this series. I desire that too. But since none of us have actually watched the series perhaps we should withhold judgement. After all, even if the worldview of the producers is questionable, isn’t the Lord capable of using unbelievers to accomplish His purposes? (e.g. King Cyrus) My prayer is that this movie motivates people to read scripture for themselves so that they may come to know the Only True God.

  26. Watched this first show with my family last night. We were excited based on all the hype. So dissappointed now however. The entire two hours were replete with typical dumbed down accounts that were barely accurate. Did the director(s) or writers’ even consider their source? It felt like listening to an account of the stories from two drunk people explaining what they learned in Sunday School. Special effects were great and it felt epic – but the actors were given way too much liberty with their portrayal and overall this was really disappointing.

There was an other review by CMI and they saw the whole 10 hours, their conclusion was that it was a production that’s world while to watch however there were some minor point’s that don’t fit with the true history of the Bible, but nevertheless a good production. Let’s pray that God can use this series to get Christians to read the Bible more closely/in-depth, and non Christians to START reading the Bible. It’s easy to get hung up on small details and I’m surtainly not saying that we should get our doctrine from this series but please let see/use it for good! Let the advice be look at it and find out what is not totally accurate (for strong believers) and look at it to learn more about the Bible (for non believers and shallow believers).. God bless all of you and please people let’s pray this series motivates people to start digging themselves!!

  30. I am going to examine your post. In your studies you may note that Jesus said I did not come into this world for the healthy I came for the sick. I also remember what Jesus said to Peter after the resurrection Peter had issues concerning John. Peter asked Jesus what about John and Jesus told Peter [paraphrasing] do not concern yourself about John, do what I told you to do. I agree that the series is sketchy and does not follow verse by verse protocol. A screenplay is by practice an attempt to define the essence of the story and is not a word for word script.
If I had to base my belief in Jesus Christ on the history of the Christian church I would never become a Christian. However
I was drawn to God by the Holy Spirit and not because of my works. I suggest that a study of the Apostle Paul’s epistles is necessary to understand that Abraham righteousness was credited to him because he believed God.
At one point in everybody’s life a choice has to be made as to whom one is going to serve. If I had the time to tell you how I came into faith you would have a hard time believing my testimony. In short it was the Spirit that opened my blind eyes to see the truth and believe God. I am an ardent believer in the finished work of the cross. And it is Jesus plus nothing else that the mercy of God gave me grace through Christ Jesus. The Scriptures are the truth and should be added to our everyday life as we grow in faith. Solomon wrote wisdom is everything but in all your getting, get understanding.
I know that Jesus is my righteousness, I know that He is the way, the truth and the life; but better than that I believe in Him and if I call on His name I am saved and no one can take me out of his hand, I am the righteousness of God in Christ and not by works but by faith.
If one single person comes into faith by watching the series of the Bible so be it, Rejoice as the angles in heaven do when a person repents and lets Jesus into his or her heart. If anyone comes to me I will in no wise cast him out. Behold I stand at the door and knock and if anyone opens the door I will come in and dine with him.
Keep in mind that Jesus said the whores and tax collectors will see the kingdom of God long before you religious people.
Paul said to take it easy on those that have weak faith; help them do not judge them. God inspired the producers of this movie so do not offer a critique, for we do not know what God is doing in their lives and it is not for us to play the role of the Holy Spirit in their lives instead pray for them.

  31. Mike,
This was a reply a friend of mine wrote when I expressed the series is only an adaptation based on scripture but is not historically accurate is as follows: “…maybe you should watch it. If it gets people interested in finding out more then it has been a good tool. Right? Most people know its a “movie” but as far as I have watched…it does point to God as I believe was the intention of its creators.” Many I see commenting are very excited about the series and say, “it’s good and you should watch.” In this thing, if I want to discuss and share the truth that there are errors and intentional changes, I’m the one given a slap on the hand. At least I put it out there, that the series has problems. Maybe those who are interested in knowing about the Bible deserve to also know the truth, that this series doesn’t accurately represent what is in the Bible.

  32. Christianlady, welcome to what is like to be uncompromising. I’m not moving. I’m not watching it. I’m not recommending it. The logic of those people saying that are assuming that there are actually lost people who are seekers that are not drawn by God, but do so on their own. God only works through his truth and this isn’t it. I expect that this miniseries will have the same sort of impact that he “Seeker-Sensitive” church movement had when it came upon us back in the 1990’s. It will be quick and will peak, but there will be no depth and it will pass when reality sets in.

Let them know the really great details were left out of the movie & to go search them out. A couple examples & where to find the info might peak someone’s interest. People who care about truth will search it out when prompted.

I was trying to find out more about Mark Burnett’s spirituality & came across some more info: “It was fascinating to hear both Burnett and Downey highlight the importance of on-set prayer circles and their connections to God in helping to move the project along. Considering the long, five-month overseas filming process and the many Biblical details that were needed to take viewers through the world’s most impactful story, some would argue that connection to a higher power was a must-have.” (New Age prayer circles I might add. I bet they were not calling on YHWH though Jesus Christ – she also said they felt “driven” to produce this show.)

  37. “You are the salt” and “you are light… let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Christ communicates these things to the disciples in the Sermon on the Mount. He calls His people to labor against the decaying darkness of a world that rejects its maker. We cannot expect unbelievers to think or act like believers (Romans 1, 1 Corinthians 1-2, et al–their thinking is “darkened”), we only do because of the grace of God in sending His Sprit to bring the dead to life (John 3, Romans 3, Col 2, et al). We must do all we do in the grace of Christ and for His glory and with “spiritual wisdom and understanding” (Col 1:9-14). We must, like the Psalmist, love God’s Word (Psalm 1) and feast upon it (Deut 8:3; Matt 4:4, Luke 4:4). Wherein He gives us understanding, we must be ready “to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.” (1 Peter 3). God requires all of His children to be students of the Word. God may call some of us to watch (even this show) and pray for opportunity to teach the truth to those who watch in error. After all, the Great Commission commands us to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”” (Matt 28:19-20). There may be many unbelievers for whom this is a first look at anything about the Bible. God may be giving us a role in sharing His truth to those who only see it partially or in a distorted light. God is sovereign. He sovereignly chose that this series should be made. Let us ask Him, “for what purpose?” I am inclined to agree with revelation310 above, pont people aright!

On a side note, in response to Manfred above, I would be careful recommending an author that is esteemed by the Southern Poverty Law Center (no friend of Christians–at all!) and the League of the South (which even he attempts to distance himself from). For a clearer picture of Lincoln’s view of slavery (which DiLorenzo addresses) one might also consider “Lincoln’s Virtues, an Ethical Biography,” by Lee Miller. Lincoln began publicly speaking out about the evils of slavery in 1854 (at which time he held no public office and prior to the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates). Here is Lincoln’s view of slavery as it relates to the presidency (from a letter dated April 4,1864):

“I am naturally anti-slavery. If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong. I can not remember when I did not so think, and feel. And yet I have never understood that the Presidency conferred upon me an unrestricted right to act officially upon this judgment and feeling.”

Manfred also recommends an article which states taht slavery was not the reason for the Civil War. For those who believe that, they have not read their history. Lincoln articulated from eth first taht preservation of the union was the cause for the Civil War (from his 2nd Inaugural):

“On the occasion corresponding to this four years ago all thoughts were anxiously directed to an impending civil war. All dreaded it, all sought to avert it. While the inaugural address was being delivered from this place, devoted altogether to saving the Union without war, insurgent agents were in the city seeking to destroy it without war—seeking to dissolve the Union and divide effects by negotiation. Both parties deprecated war, but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive, and the other would accept war rather than let it perish, and the war came.”

Then we’d watch a few seconds, and I’d read the truth in God’s Word. I even tried a few different translations. NLT, NIV, NKJV and Message just to see if I could mangle it enough to make the show match. There should have been a Bible contest to see who could point out lies the fastest. I see a possible family DVD game in the future out of this. We watched the movie version of the book, got curious and then decided to read the book? NOT! Folks, it just doesn’t work like that. I had a family member who is an atheist tell me recently that she didn’t ask me about Christianity because she already found out what she wanted to know from TV.

  41. AMEN!!!!!!

I rememer National Geographic when I was a child. I loved the intro music and cinematography. But 99.99% of what they always produced is garbage.

But, hey, maybe now NG scored a good one!

I mean, consider this. When you have stars like Pope Warren, Joel Autism, saint Palau, and many more INfamous inspired preachers making this majestic doc, are you nuts?
They put so much sacrifice and tithes into it, that it has to be G-cool! I mean, Mr. Obama approved it? Hellooo? Isnt’ that enough! So stop judging, look at all the celebs sponsoring it if you need more facts!
Also, if you like studying, this documentary has so much info about the Bible that I appreciate the episode where they talk about how clean Joel Osteen’s teeth remain after so many years preaching heresies! You won’t find such truths watching Discovery Channel, ever!
Isn’t that enough to persuade you to watch it? ;-p

    As always, keep preaching bro!

  42. Hi Mike, I honestly don’t know what to make of all of this. I have no plans to watch the series. My personal thought is this – why would a worldly cable television channel permit God’s word to be accurately portrayed? It just makes me suspicious, from the get-go. Color me skeptical.

Yet I’ve read reviews from three major American creation science ministries, all of whom appear to have given this docu drama the thumbs up, albeit with occasional “qualifications”. That surprised and concerned me. Why? Because as I learned from here and at least one other discernment source, the series was written by someone who is a professing Catholic, had many liberal theologians as “advisors”, and the drama itself involves mishandling of God’s word, and elimination of critical, historically accurate details. The series creators claim to have stayed truly true to the Bible. Yet it appears they did not keep dialogue and details strictly in line with Scripture, but rather took (at times much) creative license. Such as Jesus supposedly telling Peter to “change the world”… talk about falsehood. You can find that statement … nowhere in Scripture.

That these creative “licenses” actually DETRACT from what could have been a really good series. Keeping accurate to the written word IS possible, as Jake mentioned with the movie the Gospel of John. Granted I don’t recall the Bible version they used, but the dialog was entirely verse by verse, either narrated or spoken by the characters.

I guess in the end, what concerns me most about this docu-drama is that believers seem to be wanting to treat this dramatic series as “factual” and “truthful”, when it is in fact altered. But then again, wasn’t that how evangelicals treated the “Passion of the Christ” movie…? (Which both my husband and I watched once, and only once, and couldn’t bear the errors!) Anyhow, Steve G (above) has the right approach to watching this docu drama – with several reliable Bible translations in hand (though LOL Steve even used the MESSage, which given the accuracy of his comment, I am sure he knows the MESS hardly qualifies as reliable), pause the DVR, and discern, discern, discern.

As far as unbelievers go, again, the truth is what sets one free, the truth as faithfully presented in the word of God, not an altered version. I suppose though, this drama’s errors could open the door for evangelism, out of necessity to correct them: “Well, in the movie ‘this’ happened/was said, but let me take you to the written word of God and show you what really happened/was said.”

At least our pastor on Sunday am, said the series was not historically accurate, and felt it was more suitable to the Hallmark Channel.

Thanks Mike, and everyone above who provided wise and discerning insight.

  44. Mike I am not surprised in the various responses that Christian people share in the review of the series The Bible.
I have been a Christian for thirty-four years and I have made numerous mistakes for we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory while being in Christ. At every service when an alter call is given the urge is for one to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I am in agreement to that, however the term personal means just that personal. Why do we expect the new convert to walk in their personal relationship. We are all different and are given gifts to help build the body of Christ we are called to serve and not to overshadow ones personal experience with Christ. I am going to paraphrase due to the constraint of time and space: it is good that I am going away—but I am sending the Holy Spirit who will lead you in all truths—
If anyone is making an effort to spread the gospel who are we to criticize their vehicle that was given them,
I do think a better presentation could have been done with the movie, I am not a producer, actor, director or any vocational related talent in the movie industry. I simply trust in Christ and not in what some think my personal relationship should be.

  45. Terrance, the problem is not that they are trying to present the message of the gospel, but that what they are presenting isn’t it. You can’t edit the gospel and expect God to bless the messed up message that is presented. Doesn’t work. We have New Agers, heretics, and Seeker-Sensitive people working together as ‘experts” on telling people what God’s message from the Bible is?!?! Not gonna work. You also stated that we shouldn’t question the motives or methods of those who are “attempting to spread the gospel.” Here’s the issue: there are people behind this who’s agenda is well known and their design is to change the church along the lines of being man-cenetered instead of God-centered. Paul most certainly questioned the motives and methods of those corrupting the gospel in the book of Galatians and he is our example.

  46. Thank you Mike: I understand your point and concur. I know exactly what your concern is and I once again stand with you about hidden agendas. I try not to let my emotions reflect on my understanding but often they do (a lesson that is an on going process} for many years I read the Bible but now I am endeavoring to study all aspects of Scripture that is my joy and privilege. My quest is not to just have knowledge for my benefit but to have understanding via the Holy Spirit.
What is your opinion of The Message Bible? What is your opinion of the Book of Enoch
I am reading Enoch to see if there is validity in that manuscript. It is mentioned in the Book of Jude but not in detail.. So far I find it interesting reading not for my spiritual growth but fascinating reading.

  47. You are welcome Terrance. I have not read the book of Enoch. However, I have attempted to use the Message several years ago and it was a very bad experience, it cannot be taken as a serious representation of God’s Word. It is a paraphrase and there is most definitly an “agenda” behind it that is revealed when compared to solid historial Orthdox Christin Theology. However, it was from that experience that I began moving in the opposite direction, that is, I renewed my study of the original languages and now base most of my exegesis there rather than translations.

  48. Thanks for posting this, Mike. I’m home sick with the flu and don’t have a TV or I probably would have watched this program last night. Keep up the good work shining light on darkness. BTW, this miniseries was recommended to many of us by some African missionaries! Can’t wait to see them retract that statement…but I’m sure they were excited thinking that it would be truthful a a good tool to spread the gospel. I will check in with them later today. I have shared this information on my fb page. Thank you Mike! Keep up the good work!
