Is Homosexuality a Sin?

by Mike Ratliff

22 ‘You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination. (Leviticus 18:22 NASB)

One of the early leaders of the Bolsheviks who lead the Russian Revolution at the beginning of the 20th Century was Leon Trotsky. After the death of its main leader Lenin, Trotsky came into conflict with the Bolsheviks who supported Stalin. He had to leave the country. He wrote articles in hiding that attacked the policies of the Stalinists. One of the “strategies” of Trotsky that was rejected by the Stalinist was “Continual Revolution.” He was a true Communist. According to Marx’s Communist Manifesto, Communism is the goal, but in order to reach it Capitalism must be replaced with Socialism and eventually done away with completely in order to bring in a pure Communistic state. Trotsky was a true believer, while Stalin was more pragmatic. What has this to do with Homosexuality? The ”Gay Rights” movement is constructed according to the principles of Leon Trotsky’s “Continual Revolution.” Its true believers will never stop until they achieve their goal of complete societal acceptance of Homosexuality as a protected minority with all the same legal rights as non-homosexuals, but with the added protection from the Federal and State governments to ensure it.

There is a huge push in the visible Church right now to ‘remove the stigma’ of homosexuality as a sin. When I hear directly from any pastor such as Rick Warren that he has ‘gay’ friends and believes that the Church should not be so ‘judgmental’ and so accept them as fellow members in our churches, I know that he has compromised and is using his own standards of holiness and righteousness instead of those given to us by God, which we have in His Word. Homosexuality is nothing more than a sexual perversion, which is forbidden by God.

22 ‘You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination. (Leviticus 18:22 NASB)

13 ‘If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them. (Leviticus 20:13 NASB)

For those who say the Bible doesn’t address Lesbianism, Paul does so directly in the following passage.

24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. (Romans 1:24-27 NASB)

Homosexuality, whether between women or men, is an abomination to God. The Hebrew word translated in Leviticus 18:22 as abomination is תּעבה or תּועבה. This word refers to something that is morally disgusting or an abominable idol. God sees idolatry as the righteous see what is perverse. Sex is subject to idolatry just as is money or possessions. With all of the emphasis we have today on sex it most certainly has become an idol to many.

Homosexuality is a sin. Therefore, men and women can be delivered from it in repentance by God’s grace and power. However, we must never forget that there are no exceptions in who will inherit the kingdom of God and who will not. The unrighteous will not, while the righteous will. The unrighteous are marked by sins strictly forbidden by God. On the other hand, those truly in Christ will not be among those who practice these things. Christians are regenerate and are, therefore, new creations. They are not perfect, but they will never be at peace with anything in their lives that carries the stain of unrighteousness. They have a drive to be holy as God is holy.

9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10 NASB)

8 But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 9 realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers 10 and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, 11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted. (1 Timothy 1:8-11 NASB)

Please notice that there are those who profess to be Christians, but who are deceived. These deceived ones attempt to open wide the narrow gate of salvation to include those who are practitioners of the ways of the world. We desperately need men in our pulpits in this day to stand firm on the fact that sin is what cost our Lord Jesus Christ his life. Not His sin, for he was sinless, but the sins of all those for whom He died. How can we continue to love the sins from which or Lord’s shed blood saves us? God’s grace is beyond our comprehension, but His Word tells us plainly that even so, Christians are called to be holy, and learn to walk in repentance.

I have been following Dr. Al Mohler’s daily news briefings since the U.S. Supreme court began the process of listening to arguments concerning California’s Ban on Homosexual Marriage and the United States’ “Defense of Marriage Act,” which was signed into law in the late 1990’s. Both are being challenged as “Unconstitutional” by the “gay rights” advocates. Dr. Mohler has been going over news stories in the liberal media, which already seem to be celebrating victory. Why? Why are thy so confident? State after state where the question has come up to vote has granted some form of “minority” protection status to “gay” people that enables them to marry, et cetera. However, as I stated earlier this is far less than their goal. In all public forums it is “out of bounds” to use the argumentation that I used above, that is, that homosexuality is immoral in any way.

Does any one reading this remember a former beauty queen from California named Carrie Prejean? During the “blow up” of that I was very offended by the reaction from several so-called Christian apologists against a few of my female writer friends also in the discernment ministry who were taking stands against some of Miss Prejean’s actions on moral grounds. Some of the trash language pushed back at them from these men included the word “prude.” I found that incredibly dense and shortsighted on their part for they intended to use that word as an attack to shut my friends up, but in fact that word means that they were “shocked and offended” about “sexual” matters. My friends, I think when Christians encounter all forms of sexual perversion in the world, especially when it comes from professing Christians we are to react to it as wise as serpents, but from a basis as being as innocent as doves. Those ugly innuendo types of responses were not couched from that I assure you. They were meant to do only one thing that was to clear the way for more tolerance from Christians in the area of sexual conduct outside of marriage.

The ones demanding tolerance and for Christians to shut their Bibles (and their minds?) are doing so from a fear that if we do not play ball with then the intellectual elites (liberals) in this country when they eventually gain the upper hand politically will come and take vengeance upon all who refuse to grant “uber” rights to those in the “gay community” and that includes within the walls of our churches. In other words they are demanding that we get onboard with being politically correct or we will get left behind. No one ever mentions possible persecution, but the Bible does.

My brethren, to be left behind by society, especially as it descends deeper into the abyss of tolerance for all forms of sexual perversion, is not a problem for me. I reject Political Correctness and so should all who take up their crosses and follow the Lord daily in self-denial. Political Correctness is what shapes the vanilla, empty, effeminate institutions in our time that call themselves churches. God is calling His people to stand firm and never compromise no matter how costly it may be. Our preachers must preach the Word no matter how Politically Incorrect it may be. Homosexuality is nothing more than a sexual perversion and we must not compromise on this at all. I would hate to be those Christian leaders who have compromised in their ministries in order to maintain their Political Correctness. They will have to give an account to our Lord when they stand before Him. It matters not what man thinks of us, only what God knows about us.

Soli Deo Gloria!

  1. I so appreciate your solid stance for biblical truth brother. I have come up against many who condone and compromise this sexual perversion. Many claim the word ‘arsenkoites’ is not found in the classical Greek; I found this to be helpful – http://www.biblicalstudies.org.uk/pdf/homosexuality_corinthians6.pdf
It seems the church is baffled as to how to handle this sexual sin, mainly because the worldly terminology used to define and justify it, words like ‘orientation’, ‘same sex attraction’, and comparing it to a ‘civil right’. In the end, God has already condemned this perversion as sin, and He has defined marriage as being a life-long covenant between a man and a woman.
Sadly, we are seeing more and more who profess Christ compromising on this truth. I had a dear sister in Christ ‘scold’ me for posting so frequently on this sin on my own blog. It seems some just want this to all ‘go away’. The answer to combat this, and all sin, is to boldly call it what it is…sin; and to proclaim Christ death, burial, and resurrection. Time is running out….

  2. Even so, the foundational presuppositional argument against homosex is the biblical definition of marriage and the clear teaching that ALL sex outside that sacred unchangeable covenant is sin.

Years ago, the small church I belonged to sold its real estate to another small local church – that came out of the closet after closing as a the local outpost of the Metropolitan Community Churches; the deceived and wicked bunch with its HQ in San Fransisco who celebrate monogamous homosex as a gift from their god. Our trustees ’bout got sick. We all got an education on the wiles and ways of Satan.

  3. Manfred, yes the visible church cannot be viewed as The Church. What amazes me is how often our pastor has to clarify our stance on this, which is what the Word says not what the world demands.

  4. Amen, Mike. Thank you for always going back to the scriptures and faithfully pointing us to them and to the Lord. Just reading today: blessed are you when men hate you and when they exclude you, and revile you and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of Man’s sake.Rejoice in that day and leap for joy! For indeed your reward is great in heaven, for in like manner their fathers did to the prophets. Luke 6:22-23

Far from being haters, we are in truth the hated. The world hated Christ and they hate us because their deeds are evil. Yet the Lord Jesus Christ says that we are blessed and that we are to rejoice for there is a reward for those who continue in the Lord’s truth. Those who belong to Christ, in response to being hated, are to love their enemies, to do good to them (including telling them the truth from the scriptures), to bless them, and to pray for them. May the Lord give us the grace and the courage to stand in the evil day. May He give us boldness to tell the truth, not “our” truth but His truth from the scriptures. He give us His love in our hearts to do good and to pray. And may we rejoice together that He has a reward for us in heaven, because as you say in the end it doesn’t matter what they do or say. This world is not our home and our hope is not in what we can have in this life. What matters is eternity with the Lord who loves us!

  5. Excellent post. We all have certain tendencies toward sin, but we deny the power of the gospel when we act as though some sins are out of reach of God’s cleansing power. Sometimes sin is a mental struggle long after a person repents in action, but we must battle on each day, striving to please the Lord. In time, He often removes the stumbling block of temptation, whether it be the desire to use impure speech, drunkenness, smoking, illicit drugs, or same-sex attraction. He is the God who heals the sick, changes desires, blesses obedience, frees the captive, condemns the wicked and judges righteously. Let us not be afraid; He’s surely delivered many of us from the various temptations of hell so many are now condoning. If we walk around piously, like we’ve never dealt with the temptation to sin, I wonder if we aren’t losing opportunities to shed light in the darkness.

  6. I think it is essential to elaborate on oneontercessor’s comment and want to zero in on ‘same sex attraction’. This is using worldly terminology, this sexual perversion is birthed out of a forbidden lust, a longing and desire for what God has stated is forbidden. This is NOT an attraction, it is a perversion. The only way one could struggle with this is if they feed their mind on this sexual sin, such as filling the thought life with visual pictures, shows, images, etc. of someone of the same sex; then taking that a step further, where no one need go. Whenever sin is entertained in the thought life, it simply cannot be called a struggle because one purposely goes there and dwells on it. Since this is birthed out of a forbidden lust, the one who claims to struggle only does so because they are purposely filling their mind with this temptation. You cannot struggle unless you are intentionally dwelling on this forbidden desire.

As for addictions, this is a craving that is truly a struggle because the body/mind is addicted to a certain substance. Cravings for a drug are a true battle, but one that can be overcome- there is freedom found in Christ. The Lord has freed me from drunkenness, smoking, and lesbianism; of the three, I know firsthand the hardest struggle I faced was with smoking. It took a while for victory to come, but it did indeed come.

  7. Reblogged this on Ezekielcountdown's Weblog and commented:
Worth reading. Let us continue to pray for those trapped in this sin that God draw them to His Son. As for Bell, Warren, Hybel, and others who stand against the Word they do so at their own peril and reveal themselves to be C.I.N.O.. Love warns of sin, with repentance and salvation at the heart of all we do; conversely, hate affirms people in a sin.

  8. What God has called an abomination is just that. Many things are called abominations in Scripture, and we best heed what the Lord has said. MacArthur once preached that we as a nation have been abandoned by God.

Thanks Mike, also for re-linking to your past article about Prejean, which hit another nail on the head.

  9. I agree with you lyn. I’ve talked to other Christians about homosexuality and celibacy. Most just don’t get it that a Christian struggling with ongoing “same sex attraction” is a serious error. They equate it with the fact that all Christians struggle with sin. Yes we all struggle daily with sin but to have an ongoing same sex attraction is like if someone says they were born again and never stopped having attraction to porn or adultery. When a person is born again are we not changed? YES the power of sin is broken. If a person has the SAME attraction to sin as before then I question whether they were regenerated. being tempted is not the same as having an ongoing attraction. And so our pulpits will fill up with homosexuals as many Christians sympathy is played upon because they cannot separate the two.

  10. The ravenous wolves have and still use the Dialectic Method (DM) to create change inside the church walls. We must be in prayer and a student of the Scriptures so we will not be deceived. A brief description and easy understanding of the DM can be found here .http://www.letusreason.org/Curren37.htm
