A Trying Day

by Mike Ratliff

My wife had surgery today. It was carpel tunnel surgery on her right hand. She had the left had done about six weeks ago. In any case, we were at the hospital from about 8:30am this morning until the middle of the afternoon. While I was waiting for the surgery to end and rejoin my wife in the recovery area I was bombarded by a series of bizarre posts and questions from a person who’s theology could best be described as 100% work’s righteousness based upon cherry picked, out of context passages to support his “theology” then when I responded by placing that passage in the correct context and with passages that showed the exact opposite point he was trying to make he would accuse me of making scripture argue against itself as per the following:

“Scripture does NOT argue against scripture!, but every pontificator of substitutionary atonement resorts to that tactic as a defense. “But now a righteousness from God has been made manifest, apart OF law” Greek does not have prepositions and some foolish and stupid translator picked the wrong one! Romans 2:13 is NOT a false statement. DO NOT MAKE THE SCRIPTURE ARGUE AGAINST ITSELF UNDERSTAND!?”

No matter how I responded showing the wonderful truths of Justification by Grace alone through Faith alone as God’s gift, this is how he always responded. Then I decided to translate Romans 2:13.

13 οὐ γὰρ οἱ ἀκροαταὶ νόμου δίκαιοι παρὰ [τῷ] θεῷ, ἀλλʼ οἱ ποιηταὶ νόμου δικαιωθήσονται. (Romans 2:13 NA28)

13 For the law hearers are not just with God, but the law doers will be justified. (Romans 2:13 translated from the NA28 Greek text)

Hmmmm, doesn’t that sound familiar?

22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. (James 1:22-25 ESV)

Of course, we could expound the rest of James thesis of James 1 and 2 and see that genuine faith produces good works, which is what Paul tell us in Ephesians 2:10 that we who are Justified by grace through faith as God’s gift are, “are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them“.

My wife is doing fine and I am not in the least intimidated by this “heretic” whom the enemy is attempting to use for whatever reason to attack me and this ministry. I have blocked him from commenting for he refuses to follow the rules. I do ask that you continue to lift us up in prayer for my wife’s healing and that God will continue to use me according to His will all for His glory.

Soli Deo Gloria!

  1. There are times when we ‘pontificators ‘ need to stand 4 square on God’s Word and let it be a hedge both before us and behind us and perceive God’s Hand above us. This so-called Bible ‘Scholar’ has limited vision because he has been blinded to the truth. He is more to be pitied than scorned.

I suppose it’s a case of Natural Man vs Spiritual Man. As Paul stated in his letters to Corinth, the Natural Man cannot see nor understand Spiritual things, and God’s Word is a Spiritual thing! As you have said many times, some folks argue because you are ‘teaching’ something they don’t understand and it doesn’t matter how much you lay before them, if it doesn’t agree with their preconceived notions, it’s wrong.

The man is Blind and is to be pitied because, as I said before, he is a Natural Man.

  2. Mike, I’m glad your wife is doing fine. I overjoyed that substitutionary atonement is true – otherwise none of us would be reconciled to God🙂

  3. Thank you Manfred! As I had that stupid “drive by” discussion with that fellow, mostly on my iPhone in the waiting room at the hospital, I wanted so much to dig deep into theology to answer him, but what I couldn’t grasp is why he thought he could be reconciled to God in and of himself, which he told me he could and would do several times.

  4. Hold firm the line drawn by God and no man Mike! Never the less, we cannot turn the light up bright enough for a blind man to see… The broad road has many zealous proponents. The difference is always in the decrease of the saints and the increase sought out by the ain’ts.
I guess it is what makes the contending so contentious. Still we would that none would be lost, and even John the baptizer could not know the Messiah till He revealed Himself…and they were cousins!
We too were once blind till we were made to see, so your words and His Word given to this person may well bare fruit in season!

  5. Mickey, I asked many diagnostic questions trying to understand what he was trying to say since his first several “comments” made no sense to me in the context of the post with which he had so many issues. He rejected our Lord’s substitutionary atonement and justification by grace through faith as a gift and absolutely rejected the fact that we have to use the New Testament to interpret the Old Testament, etc. It took me a long to time to extract that from him and by then it had become quite contentious and besides all that I was in the middle of dealing with my wife’s surgery. I gave him the truth and told him that I was praying that God open his heart and draw him into the truth, but I absolutely refused to allow him to use this blog as his platform to spread his false doctrine. Now he is telling me that since he is my enemy I must love him as Jesus commanded. I suppose he thinks that means one thing, but it most certainly does not mean compromise.

  6. Excellent comment, Mickey! As we see in Luke 24, those disciples were KEPT from recognizing the Lord until He chose to open their eyes. Man has NO POWER to do so. We are merely privileged to carry His gospel to dead, blind men everywhere. As in the day of Paul, some will hate us and some will rejoice.

  7. I like COEXIST bumper sticker person. Whenever you see one, ask the driver to point out which symbol represents them. The conversation opener is an eye opener to be sure. To date though I have yet to find a Muslim bumper sticker person, though many answer Christian, and some answer none of them. Guess Jeddi Knight has no symbol yet, unless they place the “!” symbol at the end, then they can say the light sabre!

    Hint:
Start with the gospel of Luke if you find Jeddi COEXIST bumper sticker person.

  8. I will pray as soon as I post this. God bless and keep up the good fight. Some are determined to stay blind unfortunately.
