Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised

by Mike Ratliff

4 We will not conceal them from their children,
But tell to the generation to come the praises of the Lord,
And His strength and His wondrous works that He has done. Psalms 78:4 (NASB)

God is good. He is beyond our comprehension in His magnificence and the depths of His mercy. He is Holy, Righteous, and Just. He is Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent, and Immutable. Oh, let us praise Him from grateful hearts.

1 I will extol You, my God, O King,
And I will bless Your name forever and ever. Psalms 145:1 (NASB)

Those who belong to the Saviour, being bought with His blood, know that their salvation, including their future glory, is all according to bringing glory to God. We do not have a clear picture of the magnitude of our salvation on this side of eternity, however, what those in Christ have been saved from is the eternal wrath of God and separation from Him and His mercy and grace forever. Let us exalt, Him who is our God, and King. When we are finally brought into our Lord’s presence in eternity, we will then see and wonder at His magnitude and mercy and then we will bless, His name forever and ever. We will speak well of our God forever. We will praise and worship Him continually and forever.

2 Every day I will bless You,
And I will praise Your name forever and ever. Psalms 145:2 (NASB)

The worship in eternity will be continual and beyond our comprehension in this life. Here we are contaminated with the distractions of the flesh and self-focus. There, that will not be the case. We will have the same eternal focus that Christ had when He walked this earth as a man. We will be so eternally grateful for our election and salvation that we will praise God’s name forever.

3 Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised,
And His greatness is unsearchable. Psalms 145:3 (NASB)

The word translated here as “great” is μεγας, which is the source of our prefix “mega.” David, the psalmist, is telling us that God is great beyond our comprehension. The Lord is praiseworthy exceedingly, or greatly to be praised! This tells us that God is praiseworthy more than it is possible to praise Him for His greatness is unsearchable or knows no end. God is majestic and infinite. His majesty is incomprehensible. He is great and greatly to be praised!

I pray that this pause to praise our worthy God, our infinite Lord, who is beyond our comprehension has blessed you. If you are in Christ, I think you should be preparing for what it will be like in eternity with our Lord forever. We will be praising and worshipping Him forever. Let us start now!

Soli Deo Gloria!

  1. Our vivid imaginations and words of acclamation cannot begin to grasp or express the height and depth of the majesty of God and our eternal bliss at being in His presence. I can’t wait to experience it in my glorified body. I want to see where my name was recorded in heaven to receive His great gift of salvation. I want to fall at the feet of Jesus in gratitude. I want to hear truth spoken from the lips of the Master. I’m not waiting for gates of pearl and streets of gold. I’m waiting to behold the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. I’m waiting for Him to be victorious over His enemies. I’m waiting for Him to rule and reign in righteousness. I’m waiting, waiting, waiting, for He is worthy and it will be glorious beyond comprehension when we finally reach our promised eternal home. All praise belongs to God, for He has redeemed us from His wrath.
