15 “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? 17 So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 So then, you will know them by their fruits.
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’ Matthew 7:15-23 (NASB)
The last SBC President, J.D. Greear, was so obviously a shill for the left, i.e. liberals, that whatever he said or did was really no surprise and most of us considered him something of a doofus. However, the current 2021 SBC Convention has just elected a new President, Ed Litton who is from Alabama. Here is a link to some info about him. I have been all over Facebook and the Internet today looking at discussions about him. What I have seen is not encouraging.
Some of my friends looked at his church’s website and found that their doctrinal statement about the Trinity was more Modalistic than what is accepted as Orthodox by the SBC. Also, in my own study of of his background I found that he is all about unity through building bridges, that is, compromise. The Word of God clearly teaches us that Christian Unity is based where?
21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.
22 The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; 23 I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. John 17:21-23 (NASB)
1 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, 3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. Ephesians 4:1-6 (NASB)
Christian unity is not through add-ons to the Gospel such as Social Justice. It is not through vision casting. It is not through political causes. No, what does the Word say. We are to united together in the bond of peace in unity of the Spirit united to Christ by the Holy Spirit.
Also, let us not forget that with this new leadership in the SBC and a push for all the churches to come together in “unity” behind this “social justice” add-on to the Gospel, we must stop and say this is no different than what the Judaizers were doing in Galatia. They were adding works to the Gospel. I have done a great deal of research on CRT/Intersectionality and Systemic Racism which is what Litton’s agenda is all about. These things are in no way part of the Gospel. They are in fact detrimental to the preaching of the Gospel for the whole paradigm behind WOKE is that everyone is a victim and needs compensation in one way or another while the Gospel says that all of us are sinners who are responsible to God for our Sin, but Jesus paid the price for that sin and if we receive Him and Lord and Savior God will Justify us, imputing Christ’s Righteousness to our account. This is our salvation.
This is what Christianity is all about. It is not about Social Justice which is about this Kingdom of Darkness that we live in here on planet Earth. No, Born Again believers are now in the Kingdom of Light and are in no way to be focused on the Kingdom of Darkness. Why? It is not eternal. If we are in Christ we are in the Light and we are in a Kingdom that is eternal and our focus needs to be there. Yes, we must live here, but our focus needs to be on becoming more and more Christlike through walking in repentance daily as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1) so the Holy Spirit can transform us so we can discern the will of God and live accordingly (Romans 12:2). If we are consumed with the ins and outs of the Kingdom of Darkness as those who are all about Social Justice then we are not being in unity with our Lord Jesus Christ and our fellow believers, the Holy Spirit or the God the Father. No, we will be in unity with the forces of darkness and those within the SBC who are in power have started that Denomination on its Downgrade.
This is nothing new. Charles Spurgeon dealt with the Downgrade Controversy in the late 1800’s in England as the Baptist Union to which his church belonged began showing all the signs of going liberal. For a very good, detailed account of this go here.
In the meantime, be in prayer for those of us in SBC churches. Pray for our pastors and leaders to be given wisdom and direction by God to do what He wants us to do in response to this new Downgrade Controversy.
Soli Deo Gloria!
