Saving Faith vs. False Faith

by Mike Ratliff

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge– even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you– so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. (1 Corinthians 1:4-9 ESV)

Being a refugee from the SBC, I began this ministry with a great deal of spiritual baggage that stubbornly clung to me until God subjected me to the cleansing fires of His truth through dealing with tribulation, crises of dealing with bad doctrine within supposed brethren, and outright persecution from people I thought were friends. It was through these fires of tribulation that, even though very painful, I got my focus off of self and onto the Lord. His will became paramount in my heart. His glory became my focus. I am nothing; He is everything. He is my κύριος (Lord); I am His δοῦλος (slave, bondservant). I had a test today and I was not only surprised by my reaction to it, but I also rejoiced when it was over as I looked back on the journey God has thus far taken me as He has peeled away the heretical, self-focused, bad theology, and me-ism that was standard fare in the SBC churches from which I came.

The test came as I listened to yesterday’s radio show at Pirate Christian Radio as our brother Chris Rosebrough dealt with a teaching by SBC author and speaker Beth Moore on Hebrews 10:35-36. In this teaching she used eisegesis to make this passage all about believers retaining self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-worth. Here are the two verses from Hebrews 10 that were her primary focus with the bold part being the theme for her teaching.

Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. (Hebrews 10:35-36 ESV)

I had no issue with Chris showing the eisegesis and scripture twisting she did as she verse hopped all over the New Testament to support what she was teaching. My problems came as I listened to her repeat those same teachings I lived with for all those years in the SBC. I found myself being given a choice all through it. It was as if God kept pointing back to biblical context and His truth while contrasting that with what she was teaching. That is what the Holy Spirit does in the heart doesn’t He? He opens the heart to God’s truth and teaches us what is right in contrast to what is not. I found that there were still pockets of assent in my heart holding on to some of these self-focused teachings. I know that I do not teach that stuff nor was I aware that those things still had a bit of hold in me. Perhaps I am describing a stronghold that our enemy was attempting to exploit in me–perhaps–well, in any case, I did some heavy repenting as that went on and kept imploring God to continue to shine His light of truth in and cleanse me of these things. It helped a great deal that I followed along in my Bible through it all. I did indeed rejoice when it was over, having passed the test.

Let us look at Hebrews 10:19-39 to get the proper context and, therefore, God’s truth pertaining to saving faith vs. false faith.

Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. (Hebrews 10:19-22 ESV)

Where the ESV says “therefore,” the Greek says εχοντες ουν, or “having then.” This points us back to context. In Hebrews 10:1-18, the writer gave us Christ’s sacrifice once for all in contrast to the repeated Mosaic animal sacrifice. Our Lord Jesus came into the world in order to eternally sanctify His people through His substitutionary propititiation on the Cross. According to God’s will, He offered Himself as a sacrifice once for all for His people. Therefore or having then the full assurance of faith in the veracity of our Lord’s sacrifice on our account, we have παρρησιαν, boldness or confidence, to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus. What does this mean?  Look at v22 where we read, “let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” What does this mean?

full assurance of faith. Utter confidence in the promises of God is intended… Such confidence will result in heartfelt assurance or security which will allow them to persevere through the coming trials. 1

From where does this παρρησιαν come? In what or whom is it based? Is it based in our intrinsic worth because we were created in the image of God or is it because of the perfect work of Christ on our behalf for the glory of God? It is the latter not the former. If you listened to Chris’ radio show about this then you know that Beth Moore said exactly the opposite. This confidence or boldness belongs to those with full assurance of faith, πληροφορια πιστεως, which enables the believer to walk in παρρησιαν regardless of the opposition or trials from those who oppose God’s truth and all those who believe it.

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. (Hebrews 10:23-25 ESV)

This is the natural byproduct of a fellowship of believers who have genuine saving faith. This is the underlying reason we come together like this as we hold fast, κατεχωμεν, to the confession of our hope, την ομολογιαν της ελπιδος. Κατεχωμεν in v23, which is translated as “let us hold fast” in the ESV, is in present tense, subjunctive mood, and active voice. This refers to continuous or repeated action. The subjunctive mood suggests that the action is subject to some condition. To what are we to κατεχωμεν here? It is the confession of our hope, την ομολογιαν της ελπιδος. Ομολογιαν, “confession,” refers to our profession of faith, our profession that we are Christians, saved by grace and a δοῦλος, slave, of our κυριου ιησου χριστου, Lord Jesus Christ. This is our ομολογιαν if we truly have saving faith and those who have it do hold fast to it. The word translated here as hope, ελπιδος, speaks of a confidence or an expectant hope securely based in a promise from one who is eminently trustworthy. Κατεχωμεν, we hold fast, to this ελπιδος without wavering, for he who promised is faithful, ελπιδος ακλινη πιστος γαρ ο επαγγειλαμενος. Again, this is the nature of true saving faith. It believes God without wavering because the one who promised is faithful.

This is the nature of saving faith. Now lets contrast that with false faith.

For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has spurned the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. (Hebrews 10:26-31 ESV)

The phrase, “For if we go on sinning deliberately” in Greek is, “willingly (εκουσιως) for (γαρ) sinning (αμαρτανοντων) of us (ημων).” This is rhetorical. This Greek term carries the idea of deliberate intention that is habitual. The sin is rejecting Christ deliberately with premeditation. The phrase, “after receiving the knowledge of the truth” in Greek is, “ after (μετα) the (το) to receive (λαβειν) the (την) perception (επιγνωσιν) of the (της) truth (αληθειας).” The Greek term translated here as “knowledge,” επιγνωσιν, denotes specific knowledge, not general spiritual knowledge. The issue is with the application of that knowledge not in the state of the knowledge given. Judas Iscariot is a very good example of someone in this state. He possessed the same intellectual or reasoned knowledge about Jesus Christ as the other disciples, but what he lacked was saving faith and so became the arch-apostate. We see this in men who progress far in their studies of theology, but end up apostatizing. These people are beyond salvation because they have rejected the only sacrifice that can cleanse them from sin and bring them to repentance.

Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. (Matthew 12:31 ESV)

It is indeed a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God, This Greek phrase literally says, “Fearful the to fall in into hands of God living.” I do wonder when I hear the blasphemous preachers, teachers, false prophets, and apostate Christian leaders in our time prate on and on and on with their false doctrines, leading who knows how many people astray and they do it with no fear of God.

Well, enough of that. Now it is time for some encouragement for those reading this who DO possess saving faith.

But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. For, “Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay; but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls. (Hebrews 10:32-39 ESV)

We have put vv35-36 in context, which Beth Moore did not do in her teaching. What is it? The context is that genuine, saving faith produces an abiding hope that is based in a faith that believes God and enables the believer who possesses it to endure fiery trials of that faith. The passage in question is in bold above. The Greek for vv35-36 is,  “ Not (μη) you might throw off (αποβαλητε) then (ουν) the (την) boldness (παρρησιαν) of you (υμων), which (ητις) has (εχει) great (μεγαλην) payment (μισθαποδοσιαν). Patience (υπομονης) for (γαρ) you have (εχετε) need (χρειαν) that (ινα) the (το) want (θελημα) of the (του) God (θεου) having done (ποιησαντες) you might obtain (κομισησθε) the (την) promise (επαγγελιαν). Does this have anything to do with self-esteem or self-confidence? No! This is the same boldness or confidence that the writer of Hebrews was talking about back in vv 23-25. All genuine believers will possess this same faith. All of us must mature and grow in this παρρησιαν  and υπομονης, boldness and patience. In this, we can endure all sorts of trials and tests, but we do not do so via self-confidence or self-esteem. We may indeed struggle with pain and loneliness and may even despair at times, but we will endure.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me–practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:4-13 ESV)

Notice that Paul instructs us to pray continually with thanksgiving. Our peace will be given to us in this. This will be that vital ingredient that God gives to us in abundance as we fight the good fight even when everyone and everything seems to be against us. We focus on Christ and His goodness as we hold fast to our confession no matter the pressure to let go. God will give us the grace to do this no matter our circumstances. We will be content in Christ no matter what our Lord allows to come into our lives because we can do all things through Him who strengthens us. What we do in this is God’s will, not ours, for His glory, not ours.

Soli Deo Gloria

  2. Sorry, but I am appalled that you would lump Beth Moore in with whatever bad theology you came out of. Because you heard someone give a critique of one point she made does not reflect on all her teaching. I have no idea what the context was of her use of this Hebrews passage. Was this part of a study of Hebrews?

The point is, Beth Moore can be wrong. I don’t agree with everything she writes. But I can be wrong and you can be wrong and Chris Rosebrough can be wrong and ChurchSalt can be wrong.

I find it … Satan-pleasing for brothers and sisters in Christ to be tearing each other down when there is real and dangerous false teaching masquerading as truth.

I’m sorry about your past. I’m sorry you faced a temptation because of what Rosebrough said about Beth Moore and her teaching. I can confidently say, having been in three different Bible studies that used Beth Moore’s material, that she is in no way claiming some kind of power within us, some kind of self-confidence, that supersedes God’s grace and work in us.

If you have not at least read one of her books, then Mike, please don’t make assumptions. You see her affiliation (I don’t even know for sure what SBC means) and jump to some conclusion that you know what she’s about because of what you went through. That’s not right!

  3. Becky,

Don’t presume. SBC stands for Southern Baptist Church. I am very familiar with Beth Moore as I was a teacher in several SBC churches for many years and I was exposed to her teaching very much and I am lumping no one in with anything. Read the expositing of God’s Word in my post and compare that with the eisegesis that she did with that passage in that teaching. She was misusing God’s Word. She was taking it out of context and that is ALWAYS wrong. I am fallible, but God’s Word is not. That is why we must not do what she was doing with it, but keep everything in context and exposit exactly what it teaches, nothing more, nothing less. Then we are not wrong because that is what God is teaching us. My sharing of what God was doing in me as I listened to that was to put it all into context as to why I wrote what I wrote.

  4. Mike, you haven’t said where this teaching is to be found. Was she doing a study of Hebrews? Give her work a context so I know if you are accurately reflecting what she said.

And I’ll admit, I’m surprised you’ve heard her since her teaching is directed at women. I suggest you read some of her work instead of listening to videos. I can show you any number of passages that show her attitude about self-help versus relying on the finished work of Christ. You are not reflecting her beliefs, though she may have said something that you and I disagree with.

She also goes to the original and studies. If you’ve heard her as much as you suggested, you’d know this.

  5. Becky,

The study was called Don’t Throw Away Your Confidence; but what difference does it make? You can’t take two verses out of context like that to make them support an unbiblical position. It does not matter what the subject is, that is always wrong. Did you listen to the broadcast? I did. and I followed her exactly verse by verse and it was a train wreck. If you haven’t listened to it then we really have nothing to discuss until you do.

You shouldn’t be surprised and you wouldn’t be if you knew anything about the SBC. They filter teachings from her and many others into their material for everyone quite a bit.

Let me warn you Becky about these presumptions of yours. I was in the leadership in the SBC for more than a decade and I do know what I’m talking about. I suggest you back off of that assumption right now.

My measure of whether someone is obedient as a teacher is not how popular they are, but how they handle the Word of God. Period. Listen to the broadcast then reread my exegesis of those passages. You will find that she was DEAD WRONG and was twisting scripture and that means she is a false teacher.

  6. Mike, listen to yourself. While you are telling me to not be presumptuous, you suggest that I’m measuring Beth Moore by how popular she is not by how she handles the Word of God.

What I’ve been saying is, for three Bible studies I’ve seen, and can quote for you, passages that contradict what you are saying her beliefs are.

Why the context of her words matters? I’m shocked that you ask. It matters whether or not she has been accurately quoted. No I haven’t listened. I’m on dial-up and there are limitations, but I’ll do some research on Don’t Throw Away Your Confidence.

But my main point remains. With all the blatant false teaching that denies the errancy of the Bible and God’s sovereignty and Man’s sin and Christ’s resulting propitiation by His death on the Cross, why undermine a teacher who believes these things?

Yes, disagree with the error you find in her teaching. Give your reasoned, Biblical views. Call her to accuracy. But don’t intimate that her faith is false. That’s hubris.

    Becky

  7. Becky, no, hubris is you blindly defending someone when you haven’t even listened to the broadcast or read the study. I do know all about this lady and I know she is very popular and this blinds people into defending her despite her false teachings. This is far more serious than what you are suggesting. What I find quite amusing in your defense of Beth Moore is how you assume that a false teacher never tells the truth now and then. A false teacher is one who is usually almost right. The standard for verity in a Bible Teacher is far higher than that. My ideal would be for her to confess this sin and publicly repent. However, since money is involved here, I seriously doubt if that happens.

Let me make this very clear to you Becky. Until you have heard the broadcast then we having nothing more to discuss. Do you understand? You have accused me of many things, wrongly, and I take that very seriously. You DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. Do you understand this? Now, if you want to discuss further then show proof that you have read the study or heard the broadcast and are ready to show me where my exegesis is either right or wrong in relation to the butchery she made of the same passages. Understand? Until then, you are blocked.

  8. Becky, I have been through several Beth Moore studies and several years ago, I would have agreed with you. However, being that it is more important to be a Berean and love Jesus more than any teacher, preacher, friend, family member, etc., we must understand, as I often say, that no one is above being held accountable. Even sweet Beth Moore. And she must as should you, me, Mike and every Christian. She is spiraling ever downward in her teaching.
I do not at all see Mike claiming her faith as false. I do see him calling her teaching to the table and her teaching is in grievous error. Teaching that I personally can account to as some of the worst of the “almost right” which makes it more on the sheep in wolf’s clothing type. It is the “almost” right” teaching that Christians are especially warned to be on Guard against in God’s holy Word of Truth.
She has some truth thrown in there with her teaching which may appear to give it credibility. But, dear Becky, be on guard. I plead with you to sincerely pray about this before the throne of grace and search the Scriptures as a Berean with a sincere heart to know God’s Truth as He has revealed and not how Beth has revealed, in her sweet, engagingly dynamic almost true teaching style.
Be on guard and be faithful to His Word.

    Well, I have.

And as an SBC pastor myself, I would suggest that until you do listen, you cease commenting without proper context concerning what Christian apologist Chris Rosebrough accurately points out in his expose.

That way you won’t be guilty of what you are accusing Mike of.

  10. Becky wrote: “…don’t intimate that her faith is false…”
One more clarification. Mike’s title says “saving faith vs. false faith” as he explains the fruit of both.
I wrote: “I do not at all see Mike claiming her faith as false. I do see him calling her teaching to the table and her teaching is in grievous error.”
I ask for your patience as I make my statement more lucid. I do not see that Mike is claiming to have the power to know without a doubt who has genuine saving faith and who does not. However, he is Biblically displaying the fruit of both sides. That being said, teaching like Beth Moore’s oft-times leads, more so than not, people on a path of false assurance riddled with works-righteousness as the focus becomes on “me-centered” faith rather than Christ alone.
Hard to fathom for those that are so taken-in by her at the expense of truth. I know… I was once a blind BM fan.

My friend is a missionary in a country where severe consequences are the norm if you claim to be a Christian. She calls it Beth Moore’s teaching “try-hard” theology.

And then writes, “I am always appreciative of Christian leaders who continually point to the sufficiency of Christ and point to the fact that HE is the one it is all about, HE gives us any faith we have, HE gives us any abilities or strength and WE CAN’T TRY HARDER or read the Word more or pray more or be better wives or be better whatever we are in our lives. My daily prayer is for God to give me a desire for Himself. To admit there’s nothing in me that wants to do good, nothing that truly wants Him. I feel I’m learning to live in this middle place. Not living in self loathing for what I can’t do, but not rejoicing in abilities or good things I’m doing. I can live in peace and joy that He saw fit to choose me for Himself for His own purposes. Our teammate who returned to America said she’s really struggling with this, being back in the American church again, hearing all the Christian worship songs that are all saying “Thank God for what He did for me, me me” “he’s good to me”, “He helped me”. I guess maybe here we’re seeing how truly anything accomplished is all b/c of Him alone for His purposes, and it may not mean our lives look pretty or that things actually get any better.”

  11. Well, here’s my two cents worth…
Mike, I could not agree with you more. I have 5 or 6 Beth Moore DVD ‘bible’ studies under my belt with my women’s group at church over the past 3 years. At first we all were somewhat fascinated with her… she is very motherly and complimentary and a lot of women connect with that…but I agree with Lisa’s comment above. Her studies have deteriorated since I have started doing them.
We are currently in the midst of her Esther… It’s Tough Being A Woman, study. Can you please tell me if Esther chapter 3 teaches the following. According to Beth, Haman’s big problem is unforgiveness, leading to meanness. He was mean to Mordecai. He is a mean man period. It is tough being a woman in a mean world. Other women are a woman’s worst enemy. (In our homework we then traced all the way back to high school to identify the women who were mean to us and what they did. We had to talk about other women rejecting us, etc.) That was the core of her message.
In chapter 4, which we just finished last week, and verse 11 we learn that Esther has not been summoned by the king for 30 days. From that Beth concludes that Esther was a woman with marital problems and emotional distresses. Those distresses were influencing her decision making processes. It will influence ours too. We need to be delivered of it. We need to be transparent because if we are not then God can’t deliver us…or something like that.
This current Esther study is most difficult to sit through. She is a better emotional counselor than bible teacher.
She knows what women like to hear. There is a reason her material is one of the top sellers at Lifeway, if not the top seller. She knows what women like to hear.
    Thanks, Mike.
    God’s rich blessings to you.

  12. Thanks for sharing that Diane! I have studied Esther through many times and taught through it as well. That application you shared is foreign to the context of what the writer of Esther was sharing. It has nothing to do with that. How she could infuse that teaching into Esther 4 is something I cannot fathom. My wife and daughter liked her as well, but I have noticed that they have really slacked off their support for her over the last few years. It’s not because of what I have been saying about here either. I believe the Holy Spirit will draw the Lord’s people away from false teaching. Some hear more readily than others to be sure.

I personally do not like the role of pointing out these things. I exposit scripture and teach. That is what I do, but God continually puts me in these positions of obedience if I speak and teach the truth about some false teacher or disobedience if I don’t. I must do the former for the latter is worthless. Some people seem to thrive on that sort of thing, but I do not like it, however, I must obey my Lord.

We need ones such as yourself to do this, and Ken as well, and we need not only the error pointed out but the truth explained. The balance of both.
Some seem to enjoy pointing out the error but you do not. You are truly concerned for the purity of God’s word and that souls might be saved by the hearing of it.
    Thanks!

  14. Thank you Diane! Yes, that is my heart. What a wonderful Gift the Word of God is to us! When we see people straying from the narrow way of God’s Truth it will invariably be because of their mishandling or neglect of God’s Word. Man-centered teaching is sans Biblical Truth. Infusing these messages people want to hear eisgetically into Scripture is something that these people will have to give an account of to the Lord. We must diligently seek to have our doctrines, service and daily walks lined up with God’s Truth not what we want or what men want or what the world wants. This means we will always be cross-grained to the ebb and flow of the world and the visible church and this will cause us tribulation, but to God be the glory. This life is short and we will soon be with our Lord forever. I am most certainly looking forward to that!

  15. I have read only one of Beth Moore’s books–a gift from a friend–many years ago. It didn’t like it well enough to go out and purchase another book by her. Because I’ve heard good and bad things about her teaching I’ve remained neutral. After listening to Chris’ entire broadcast I was SHOCKED how off-base she was. The thing that struck me is how ill equipped she is to teach a Bible study. How could her publishing house and her agent not know this? I find this deeply troubling. Equally as troubling is the fact that her fans seem love her more than they love the truth. I cannot recommend her books/Bible studies to any of my friends. Mike, you are an awesome watchman. And so is Ken!

  16. Amen and thank you Marsha.

I think the ones who listen to her and eat up what she says as she teaches as she did in the video are not well grounded in the Word of God. That is an indictment against the shallowness in the Church in our time, and I think that is what God is revealing to us in things like this. We must get the Church, all those who do hear the truth and draw near to God to hear and obey, to become firmly grounded in His Word, to mature in Him, to be transformed by the renewal of their minds as they become living sacrifices on the altar of Grace.

  17. Wow! I love this blog and am so thankful for each one of you! I have never joined a Beth Moore Bible study and am thankful for that. I have a feeling that I would have really enjoyed her studies about 7 years ago! It would have appealed to my senses and inner feelings and Im sure I would have learned sooo much about myself…..
Thank you Lord for your truth being revealed and opening my eyes and ears! All I needed to know about myself is what a depraved person I really am, and how it’s really not about me at all!!
I am praying for you,Becky, that God reveals Himself even greater to you and ask that you pray for discernment. How quickly we say “we can all be wrong sometime”. I agree with you but I do not teach thousands of people she does and will be held to a stricter judgement.
I stand with Mike, I hope that God grants repentance to Beth and that she is reconciled back to HIM!
Thanks again Mike, the way the Holy Spirit uses you amazes me! 🙂

  18. Mike, I am SOOOO in agreement with you here. Like Lisa, a few years ago I might have thought Beth was Biblical, but that was when I didn’t realize the difference between preaching law and preaching gospel. Sometimes she does preach gospel. She will reassure us with the gospel of our sins forgiven and then turn around and whack you with the law and say “YOU BETTER do this… you just HAVE to do that.” But it is such a toss up each time whether her focus will be law or gospel. And on top of that she throws in a good unhealthy dose of extrabiblical revelation and lite mysticism. Now, for many years I halfway bought into the Lord ‘leading’ me by ‘impressions’ and ‘feelings’ and ‘having a peace about things.’ I used to say things like ‘the Lord laid on my heart’ etc etc. I hadn’t realized until the last 10 years or so how dangerous that is, and how binding and oppressive, to always be guessing whether I’m ‘hearing the Lord’s voice.’ It’s a bit like people who have to check their horoscopes. It’s as binding as what most people think of as silly superstitions. The answer is “NO” I am not hearing his “voice.”

The Lord leads us through a very ordinary study of Scripture. And yes Beth Moore SAYS she teaches that, but then she ADDS to it and is always wandering away from it in what she actually teaches. I am glad more and more people are noticing. I feel bad for Beth too though because I really think her heart is in the right place, and doesn’t realize what she is doing.

The last one I took a look at was Believing God. There are many such stories in there of the Lord “getting ahold of” her or someone else and of God “telling” her or another person things in the middle of the night or in the middle of a ‘time of silence’ and whatnot.

I just don’t see what Rebecca is all het-up at you for. You’re spot-on. She should listen to Chris’s analysis. And she should just become a regular listener to train her ear to have a better sense of ‘spiritual pitch’ so she can better detect when something is ‘out of tune.’

  19. Thanks for sharing that Paula! I think Rebecca has an idolatry problem, but that is just my impression, God didn’t tell me that. 🙂 I think a lot of Christians need to learn these truths you are sharing here about listening to and hearing God…

  20. To diverge from the focus on Beth Moore, with whose teachings I am not familiar (I agree with the view in the article that our confidence is to be in Christ and His finished work on our behalf), I would like to ask the following:

With regard to the section in your article about Heb.10:26-31, I’d be interested to know your view regarding my oldest son, who was the one of my sons who walked with the Lord in his junior high years, then began to pull away as he apparently came under condemnation (I suspect regarding some temptation or pre-occupation) towards the end of his school years. He left home for university where he turned his back completely on the Lord (he claimed he now felt so free!) and is now an atheist, living a Godless life, won’t even discuss values let alone faith, so I just keep praying for him.

In terms of this passage in Hebrews and what you state, am I wasting my time praying for the Lord to bring my son back to repentance and surrender to the Lordship of Jesus Christ? I keep praying that God is faithful to complete the good work He began in my son all those years ago.

On the other hand, my other two sons believe in Jesus Christ for salvation and go to church, but that’s about as far as they go. The lead what most would consider sober and godly lives, when one considers most young people today, and their greatest vice is addiction to computer games and anime! While I reckon they are sincere in their faith, I wouldn’t call them passionate about the Lord, His Word or serving Him. So in terms of Rev. 3, about the lukewarm Laodiceans, will Jesus spit them out?

Can you see why it becomes very difficult when one starts pronouncing judgement on people before they have lived out their lives on earth? Because of my sons (who got Biblical instruction from me from the time I came to know the Lord, and for whom I have prayed constantly), I have to believe in the grace of God, that He will yet work in their lives, that as long as we have breath in our bodies, there is hope for salvation for my sons and my husband (who is also an atheist and has heard the truth so many times in the past 20 years – I came to know the Lord a few years after my youngest was born). Ironically, despite the apparent “failure” with my sons spiritually, the Lord has led me to minister the gospel to children in a schools ministry…

P.S. Because this is a public site and I am describing a personal situation, I have used a pseudonym.

  21. Alien & Stranger,

Never stop praying for ALL of your children as well as for yourself that faithfulness will become the focus of your lives. That passage talks about those who profess to be Christians, but who forsake that for apostasy. I am not God. Only He knows about your son who has gone his own way. Never stop praying for him. However, I assure you that the worst witness he sees that will not provoke him to repentance are lukewarm Christians. I have some in my family that are like both your son who has apostatized and those who appear faithful, but are more interested in lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. However, most of the visible church is just like that…

You cannot live anyone’s life for Jesus. You can only live your own and instruct those God has given to you. Your part is what you have done and then be the godly parent that cannot be ignored as a positive witness for the power of the Cross and truth of the Gospel. If we are flesh driven and more interested in the world than in living for the glory of God in all we do then what sort of witness is that?

Again, never stop praying for your children as you walk blameless before your Lord. Ask God to use YOU as the example for your children and for Him to break their hearts unto repentance. He can do it if He can save someone like me who sounds a lot like your son in apostasy before God reached out and plucked me from the fire. I too was raised in a Christian home, but went my own way until I was 35. God is not limited by our perceptions, et cetera. Never stop praying for your kids.

    In Christ
