If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. Matthew 16:24-25
If God has called you to be truly like Jesus in all your spirit, He will draw you into a life of crucifixion and humility. He will put on you such demands of obedience that you will not be allowed to follow other Christians. In many ways, He seems to let other good people do things which He will not let you do.
Others who seem to be very religious and useful may push themselves, pull wires, and scheme to carry out their plans, but you cannot. If you attempt it, you will meet with such failure and rebuke from the Lord as to make you sorely penitent.
Others can brag about themselves, their work, their successes, their writings, but the Holy Spirit will not allow you to do any such thing. If you begin to do so, He will lead you into some deep mortification that will make you despise yourself and all your good works.
Others will be allowed to succeed in making great sums of money, or having a legacy left to them, or in having luxuries, but God may supply you only on a day-to-day basis, because He wants you to have something far better than gold, a helpless dependence on Him and His unseen treasury.
The Lord may let others be honored and put forward while keeping you hidden in obscurity because He wants to produce some choice, fragrant fruit for His coming glory, which can only be produced in the shade.
God may let others be great, but keep you small. He will let others do a work for Him and get the credit, but He will make you work and toil without knowing how much you are doing. Then, to make your work still more precious, He will let others get the credit for the work which you have done; this to teach you the message of the Cross, humility, and something of the value of being cloaked with His nature.
The Holy Spirit will put a strict watch on you, and with a jealous love rebuke you for careless words and feelings, or for wasting your time, which other Christians never seem distressed over.
So make up your mind that God is an infinite Sovereign and has a right to do as He pleases with His own, and that He may not explain to you a thousand things which may puzzle your reason in His dealings with you.
God will take you at your word. If you absolutely sell yourself to be His slave, He will wrap you up in a jealous love and let other people say and do many things that you cannot. Settle it forever; you are to deal directly with the Holy Spirit, He is to have the privilege of tying your tongue or chaining your hand or closing your eyes in ways which others are not dealt with. However, know this great secret of the Kingdom: When you are so completely possessed with the Living God that you are, in your secret heart, pleased and delighted over this peculiar, personal, private, jealous guardianship and management of the Holy Spirit over your life, you will have found the vestibule of heaven, the high calling of God.
Many thanks for posting this. I don’t pay attention to the White Horse Inn (several reasons). I will listen to this. BTW, our church is planning a conference next fall – and Michael Horton will be a keynote speaker and will host White Horse Inn from there. I’ve read this book three times, as it explains Baptist Reformed Covenant theology very well: http://reformedbaptist.blogspot.com/2010/05/fatal-flaw-of-theology-behind-infant.html

Having read the chapter on justification from Horton’s new Systematic Theology, I was hopeful of an excellent review of the New Covenant in this recording. I was not disappointed! I think it was a solid, biblical defense and explanation of the New Covenant and the origin and proper place of God’s Moral Law. They did not get into the details that drive them to their paedobaptist doctrine. The book I recommended has an excellent review of this, from which I extracted a one-page summary, here: http://defendingcontending.com/2011/03/19/covenantal-dichotomism-2/

My favorite part was when they were discussing how the covenant that was done away with was the one cut at Sinai, but not the one cut with Abraham. Very important that we get that. Thanks for the link Manfred.

I valued the discussion of the distinction between the moral law – which was codified on Sinai – and the ceremonial and civil laws, which proceeded from Sinai. New Covenant Theology insists that the Old Covenant was issued as a complete, inseparable covenant that cannot be split into its moral, ceremonial, and civil components. This recording helps clarify the biblical record.

Amen Manfred, that’s exactly what I got out of it as well. Thanks for validating that for me.

Mike,
Due to the limited time on my aircard I couldn’t listen or watch the above but here are some Scriptures:
Galatians 2:16
“Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.”
Galatians 3:10-18
“For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyong who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them” But that no one is justified by the law is evident, for “the just shall live by faith.” Yet the law in not of faith, but “the man who does them shall live by them.” Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might recieve the promise of the Spirit through faith.” Brethren, I speak in the manner of men: Though it is only a man’s covenant, yet if it is confirmed, no one annuls or adds to it. Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “and to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed.” who is Christ. And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect. For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise.”
2 Corinthians 3:4-13
“And we have such trust through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory. For even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels. For if what is passing away was glorious, what remains is much more glorious. Therefore, since we have such hope, we use great boldness of speech–unlike Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the end of what was passing away.”

Correcting a missing word:
In Galatians that one sentence should read “….That the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later…”
I left out ‘years’ above.
